As its name suggests, indoor soccer is soccer played indoors rather than outdoors.

This means you can play the game all year round, regardless of the weather outside.

However, you will find that this means it’s usually played in a walled area with limited space.

Because of this limitation, indoor soccer plays differently than the normal outdoor version, and therefore different rules apply.

Generally, indoor soccer follows most of the same rules as outdoor soccer, with a few differences. However, the game has no universally accepted rules, as there is no central governing body. Instead, each league plays by its own rules.

Indoor soccer modifies the rules of outdoor soccer to fit its smaller pitch. As such, it usually consists of two five-to-seven-player teams trying to score goals against each other on a synthetic carpet or turf.

By reading further, I will show you the rules of indoor soccer as devised by the U.S. Indoor Sports Association, the most commonly used rules in America.

The Official Rules of Indoor Soccer

Indoor soccer is a fun, physically rigorous sport that lets you play soccer in any weather.

It also works as a great development tool for anyone who wants to learn and excel in soccer. However, you shouldn’t confuse it with other versions of soccer you play indoors, such as Futsal and five-a-side.

Check out my article – The Difference Between Indoor Soccer and Futsal – for more info on this topic.

With that said, the game plays a lot like its outdoor cousin. There are some significant differences, though.

You play indoor soccer on a smaller field with artificial turf that is surrounded by boards. It is similar to a hockey rink with grass. Other major differences revolve around playing techniques and rules that take advantage of the indoor field.

I mentioned before that indoor soccer has no universal ruleset. However, most leagues use a variant of one of the following rules:

U.S. Indoor Sports Association (USISA)

World Minifootball Federation (WMF)

The USIA rules are the most common rules for indoor soccer in America and will be the rules we will cover here.

However, the WMF is more popular among international and professional leagues. Luckily, both rulesets are similar, with only minor differences in the size and shape of the ball and field.

Indoor Soccer Ball

Indoor soccer uses normal regulation outdoor soccer balls.

Leagues for children 12 and under use a standard-size four ball. Every other age group uses a size 5. Because of this, indoor soccer balls are between 27 and 28 inches in diameter and weigh between 14 and 16 ounces.

Only the referees can manage the ball throughout the duration of a game. As such, the team or person supplying the balls must present all game balls to the referees before each game and retrieve them afterward. Neither team can switch out the ball without the consent of the referee.

Check out the history of the soccer ball in my article – History of the Soccer Ball from Origins to Modern Day.

Indoor Soccer Field Rules and Regulations

Now that you know about the rules for the soccer ball itself, what about the field?

An indoor soccer field must be between 140 and 210 feet long and 60 to 90 feet wide. The recommended dimensions are 200 feet by 85 feet.

Indoor soccer field

Fortunately, most regulation hockey rinks and basketball courts will fit these dimensions, provided the corners are rounded off with a 28-foot radius.

Perimeter Wall and Playing Area

Many aspects go into the perimeter wall and indoor soccer field playing area.

A 4 to 12-foot perimeter wall must enclose an indoor soccer field. The playing area must have an artificial turf floor. Most of the wall should be around 6 to 8 feet high, with the area in front of the team benches (4 feet high) and the goal (2 feet above the crossbar) being the exceptions.

Indoor soccer uses all the traditional lines and markings from the outdoor game. These include the following:

Half-way line

Center circle and center mark

Goalkeeper areas

Penalty arches

Corner arches

However, these lines and markings must be adjusted to fit the smaller field.

For instance, the lines are 4 inches wide with 9-inch penalty marks and a 15-foot center circle.

Other indoor soccer field line adjustments include:

All side markings must be within 3 feet of the wall.

All lines stretch from wall to wall and must go up the wall

A restart line connects the two restart markings on either side of the center

Flags and other signage must be placed on top of the wall near their corresponding locations

A touchline, consisting of 3-foot dashes separated by a foot of space, must run the length of the wall.

Team Benches and Penalty Area

The benches for the teams must be on the same side of the field but on different sides of the halfway line. These benches must be reasonably separated and protected from each other and spectators.

Each team should have a penalty area situated across from their bench on their sides of the referee crease. A 15-foot semicircular referee crease must surround the center point on the opposite side from the team benches.

Although, you can move the crease close to the official scorer’s table as needed.

Goals

Goals are embedded into the walls on either end of the field.

They consist of two goalposts that stand 6 to 7 feet on either side of the center of the wall. A horizontal crossbar connects the goalposts about 8 feet above the ground.

Together, they serve as attachments for the net that extend about 5 feet behind the goalposts and wall. A goal-line marks the wall gap to denote the goal’s edge.

Indoor Soccer Players and Personnel Rules

The following rules define the number of active players, officials, and team personnel required for a game of indoor soccer.

Team Size and Player Positions

An indoor soccer game requires two teams of up to 18 eligible players each. But not all of these can play at once.

An indoor soccer team consists of 5 to 7 players on the field at any given time. This number includes the goalkeeper.

Player positions on field in indoor soccer

However, a few leagues only allow four active players per side. In this circumstance, each team can only have up to 2 non-player members, including at least one adult if it’s a youth league.

The specific number of players permitted will depend on the league.

The active players have one of these assigned roles:

Goalkeeper or goalie

Defender – 2 players – defensive players

Forward – 2 players – offensive players

Midfielder – 1 player – center and can play offensively or defensively

Except for the goalie, these roles are more guidelines than rules. Every player can play offensive or defensive, depending on the situation.

Check out my article – Indoor Soccer Positions Explained: Roles and Responsibilities – for more information.

Substitutions

Both teams have unlimited substitutions except during overtime.

Substitute players may stand on the field of play but must remain outside the touchline until the relieved player crosses the line. They also cannot touch the ball until the substitution is complete.

Substitutions that occur during a play stoppage can occur anywhere on the field.

Player Equipment

Every player, except the goalies, must wear their team’s uniform consisting of a few things.

They include:

Team jersey of the same color and style with their number on the back

Appropriate indoor artificial turf footwear

Shorts and socks

Shin guards

The goalies wear similar gear, except that their jerseys must be a different color to distinguish them from the other players.

Goalkeeper playing indoor soccer

While not required, goalies can also wear gloves and pants instead of shorts, along with appropriate headgear.

Referees and Game Officials

All valid games of indoor soccer have one league-approved referee who manages the game and the rules.

However, some leagues may also require the following:

An assistant referee

A secondary floor referee

A timekeeper

The referee’s decisions are final, though he or she can change the decision before the game restarts.

Game Clock and Duration of Play

Now, let’s get into the rules for the duration of play.

Professional indoor soccer games last for 60 minutes, split into 15-minute quarters. However, many league rules only require games to be 44 minutes long with 22-minute halves. They only require a 2-minute half-time, but professional leagues use 15-minute halftimes with 3-minute quarter breaks.

The game clock runs continuously through each half or overtime period unless there is an unusual game delay.

Soccer scoreboard with clock

Otherwise, the referee decides when and where the clock stops and restarts and may adjust the clock as needed to permit:

Penalty kicks

Shootouts

or correct clock malfunctions

If the facility permits, the scoreboard may display a game clock showing the official time and any penalties.

Overtime and Tiebreakers

What about the rules for when an indoor soccer game is tied?

When indoor soccer games are tied at the end of the regulation period, they will have a “sudden death” overtime period that is 10 minutes long for amateur leagues and 15 minutes for professional games.

During these periods, the first goal wins the game.

Leagues may allow a shootout tiebreaker or a penalty shootout if the game remains tied after overtime.

Game Start and Restart

All gameplay begins with a kickoff from the center mark at the start of each half and after a goal.

Overtime periods use a referee-dropped ball.

All players must remain on their half of the field and outside the center circle until the ball enters play. Only the assigned kickoff players are allowed in the center circle.

During the first kickoff, both teams can vie for the ball. However, the referee can choose which team gets the ball first instead.

Kick-off in soccer

In these games, the other team chooses which side of the field to defend. After that, the opposing team gets the kickoff after each goal.

For the second-half kickoff, the teams switch sides, and the team that lost the first kickoff gets the ball.

For defensive restarts, the goalie may throw the ball or kick it back into play.

All other restarts can be a kickoff, dropped ball, or a free kick, as determined by the referee. Otherwise, indoor soccer is played like an outdoor game.

Game Stops and Out of Bounds

Due to the indoor nature of the sport, there is no “out of bounds” in indoor soccer unless the ball travels over the wall into the spectators.

The wall boards are considered “in play,” and players can freely bounce the ball off them. The game only stops when a goal is scored, the referee signals the end of the play or enforces a rule violation. The referee can also pause the game to deal with an injured player.

If the ball goes out of bounds, the ball switches teams, and the game restarts where the ball went over the wall.

Game Play Fouls, Penalties, and Violations

Indoor soccer is like the outdoor version of the game in most aspects. Players cannot touch the ball with their hands or arms.

They also cannot unreasonably delay the game.

Any of the following violations of these rules will draw a penalty or foul in indoor soccer:

Kicking, tackling, tripping, pushing, or hitting another player

Holding, interfering with another player, or other unsportsmanlike behaviors

Handling the ball when not the goalie or taking the ball outside the penalty area

Preventing the goalie from releasing the ball

Illegal substitution

Equipment malfunction

Interfering with a free kick by entering the protected zone

Abusing or ignoring the rulings of the referee and other game officials

Delaying the game

Committing these violations can result in losing the ball or giving the opposing team a free kick.

Violations can also lead to the referee ejecting a player from the game temporarily or permanently.

Ejected players usually must wait in their team’s penalty box until the referee allows them to return to the game.

Penalty Cards

Most indoor soccer leagues use a “3-card system” to denote rule infractions, though you will see the occasional “2-card system” as well.

In either system, the referee calls penalties by displaying a card.

Red and yellow card

The color of the card denotes the severity of the violation and the penalty type:

Blue Card – optional; denotes a minor foul or a non-compliance warning, also denotes a “three-line violation” or kicking the ball unimpeded across three lines down the field; the guilty player gets a 2-minute suspension from the game; may also be given for facilities violations and malfunctions

Yellow Card – serious or reckless fouls; also given out when a single player receives multiple blue cards; the guilty player gets suspended from the game for at least 2 minutes

Red Card – extreme, abusive, and intentional fouls can be awarded for receiving multiple yellow cards; the guilty player is completely ejected from the game and the facility in some cases; the team also receives a 2-minute suspension before they can field a replacement.

Indoor Soccer Shoes

You might have mistaken these shoes for fancy street footwear in the shoe store, but they are functional shoes that come in various styles people love.

Unlike other cleats, indoor soccer shoes have different, heavier soles that feature multiple patterns on the bottom that are crucial to a player’s movement.

What is Special About Indoor Soccer Shoes?

You might not think there is a big difference between different types of soccer cleats, but you would be wrong.

A few significant alterations to indoor cleats make them for unnatural surfaces, like astroturf, and forego the old-school soccer cleats for grass.

Once you know the differences, they are easy to distinguish.

A few things that make indoor soccer shoes unique are as follows:

Soles – The soles on indoor soccer shoes are one of the things that make them different. Outdoor soccer shoes have deep spikes meant to grab onto the grass as they move. The soles on indoor shoes have several small nodules or impressions that allow them to get traction on the turf.

Construction – Another thing that makes indoor soccer shoes unique is their construction. They follow conventional methods but have reinforced spots along the arch for lateral movement. In addition, they could have reinforced heels and toe caps.

Indoor soccer shoes are unique because they have to work on surfaces other than natural grass. Like a basketball court, the floors could be hard or made with artificial turf that attempts to simulate grass.

However, the soles are what makes them the most special.

They are constructed like other soccer shoes but have reinforcements in different areas.

Indoor soccer game

What’s the Difference Between Indoor and Turf Soccer Shoes?

The soles and cleats are the most significant differences between indoor and turf soccer shoes.

Protrusions from the sole of turf soccer shoes, known as cleats, are needed to get traction from the grass and earth. Indoor soccer shoes do not need cleats as they are used on a hard surface.

In addition, there should be more surface area for indoor shoes to grab the floor or astroturf. So, indoor shoes have less pronounced teeth in favor of heavier soles that have patterns for traction.

How to Choose Indoor Soccer Shoes

Now that you know what indoor soccer shoes are used for and how they are made, it is time to discuss how to choose them.

The same principles apply to buying outdoor soccer shoes, but you must consider several factors.

The Surface Impacts the Style of Indoor Soccer Shoes

The most important thing to consider when picking out indoor soccer shoes is the type of surface used.

For example, if you are playing on a surface that simulates grass, the design of the soles on the shoe will be necessary.

If you aren’t prepared, you could face injury or injure another player.

The two surfaces most common with indoor soccer are as follows:

Turf – Turf soccer shoes need a different sole than hardwood. The bottom looks like tiny bumps and simulates outdoor soccer spikes. The main difference is they are rounded to give cushion and traction on the plastic grass surface.

Hardwood – Hardwood indoor soccer shoes are closer to sneakers than cleats. They have a bottom with a typical pattern, like basketball shoes, and are flexible. They are also light shoes that some folks mistake for regular walking shoes.

A pair for each surface is best if you are on a travel team.

Some areas could have several courts together that are a mixture of surfaces.

Remember that turf soccer shoes are covered with nodes along the bottom, and hardwoods have a pattern for traction, like a basketball shoe.

Indoor soccer game

Materials are Another Critical Aspect of Indoor Soccer Shoes

The materials from which indoor soccer shoes are made significantly impact their performance.

Like the soles, two options are most prevalent, but subchoices allow the players to pick a shoe that works best for their style of play.

The most common materials used when constructing indoor soccer shoes are as follows:

Leather – Leather is one of the most used materials in shoes. Indoor soccer shoes made from leather are comfortable, will be around for a while, and will conform to your foot over time. The downside is that they are heavier than synthetic shoes and could require a bit more upkeep.

Synthetic – Synthetic indoor soccer shoes are often extremely light and could degrade quickly. They are often rigid shapes that never conform to you; some players say they feel like socks. They are easy to clean, and high-end brands could last longer but cannot compare to the durability of leather.

Indoor soccer shoe materials are critical to getting a shoe that fits you and your play style.

When shopping, remember what you need from the shoe and how much you can spend. Expensive shoes don’t always last the longest, and cheap shoes could have faults that lead to injury.

Fitting of Your Indoor Soccer Shoes

The fit of your shoe brings the picture into focus.

There could be flashy shoes that are light as a feather, but if they don’t fit correctly or conform to your foot, they could be a waste of time and money.

Knowing how they should fit you is critical info that you must know before buying.

Indoor soccer shoes

A few things to consider when fitting indoor soccer shoes are:

Does it Hurt? – One of the first things you should look for when trying new soccer shoes is pain. If there is pain when you walk or when placing it on your foot, chances are it does not fit. Pain is a massive indicator of shoes rubbing against your ankle or being too tight on your heel.

Is there a Gap? – Your indoor soccer shoe should fit with a tight heel and ankle with a gap of ¼ or ⅛ inches at the toe. This gap allows your toes to breathe and stretch out to grip the shoe. If there’s no gap, your toes will have pain and cramp the shoe during matches.

Does Your Foot Fit? – Your foot must fit in the shoe comfortably in all directions. The length is significant, but does the width fit also? The shoe isn’t for you if your foot is not tight at the heel and comfortable from front to back.

Fitting the shoes is an integral part of the process.

You should put time and effort into shopping for shoes as they could be a factor in winning or losing.

Run around in the shoe store, jump the benches, or take a stroll to ensure no pain and that the appropriate gaps are maintained.

Can You Wear Regular Shoes for Indoor Soccer?

You should not wear regular shoes for indoor soccer. Indoor soccer shoes have specific features that make them ideal for an indoor soccer game. Regular shoes do not have these features and can limit your performance on the field.

Don’t go into a high-speed indoor soccer match with the wrong shoes, as your ankles and feet could sustain injury.

There are several reasons for this, and you save yourself from these injuries by knowing what they are.

A few reasons that you should not wear regular shoes for indoor soccer are as follows:

Injury – The most prominent reason to avoid using regular shoes on the indoor pitch is your risk for injury. The game moves fast, and if your shoes weren’t constructed for moving in multiple directions, you are placing your hips, ankles, and knees in a rough situation.

Rules – Some indoor soccer fields prohibit street shoes on their turf or hardwoods. There is a substantial risk for regular shoes to eat up astroturf and leave marks on hardwoods. In addition, scuffs aren’t suitable for the surfaces, and keeping the shoes out is more manageable than repairing the problems.

Purpose – Indoor soccer shoes were created for indoor soccer. This means they were designed to let the athlete move in any direction at high speed while supporting the ankle and foot. If the shoe isn’t purposely built that way, you could have trouble with explosive moves and handling the ball.

In the same way, you cannot wear outdoor soccer cleats for indoor soccer.

You can, however, wear the same shoes for both indoor soccer and futsal. Although the two games are different in a number of ways, the type of surface the games are played on allows a player to wear similar shoes.

The Best Indoor Soccer Shoes

The fun part about getting new shoes is the shopping. It creates excitement and lets you know the season is approaching.

The best indoor soccer shoe for you is the one that fits you and your budget.

If you need a pair of each, the fun in shopping is doubled, and now that you know what you need, it won’t take long to get the shoes of your dreams.

No matter what position you play in indoor soccer, you will find a suitable pair of shoes for you here.

Capitano is a popular shoe because it is affordable and has incredible potential.

The Super Liga is also popular because it is affordable and made from leather. Leather indoor soccer shoes are durable, and the Liga has a built-up rubber sole that allows players to use them for much longer.

The Puma Super Liga has a style that looks like the Adidas Samba, one of the first popular indoor soccer shoes. It also has reinforced areas around the arches and heel which help protect the athlete’s ankle.

Conclusion

Indoor soccer shoes differ from standard cleats by having a different surface on the bottom and much larger soles.

They have nodules or patterns on the sole, creating a better environment for traction than the tall spikes in outdoor soccer shoes.

In addition, they have reinforced heels and arches to support movement and prevent injury.

Choosing the right indoor soccer shoe for you requires that it fits correctly, is made from quality materials, and doesn’t cause pain to your feet or ankles while wearing it.

In addition, you should always test out shoes in the store by running or recreating soccer movements to ensure they are worth spending money on.

Winter makes it difficult for people to play soccer outdoors. This is one of the major reasons why indoor versions of the game, such as indoor soccer and futsal, exist.

Although futsal and indoor soccer may seem similar at first, there are several significant differences between them.

The main difference between indoor soccer and futsal is that indoor soccer is played on grass in an indoor area using a standard ball, while futsal is played on a hard court using a special low-bounce ball.

The length of a futsal game is different from a game of indoor soccer, also. A futsal game lasts for 40 minutes, and an indoor soccer game lasts for 60 minutes.

This contrast between the two games adds a unique interest to each version of soccer.

But these are not the only differences between indoor soccer and futsal.

Keep reading, and I’ll show you more differences between the two.

Futsal and indoor soccer are equally fun and challenging sports. I definitely enjoy playing both.

They both help improve overall athletic ability, coordination, and intelligence.

While they have similarities, indoor soccer, and futsal have many differences, as seen above.

Let’s dive deeper into those differences:

Indoor Soccer

As the name suggests, indoor soccer is only played indoors.

The sport was originally designed for venues where it is too cold to play outdoors throughout the winter.

Indoor soccer is played on an artificial grass surface (turf) on a small field. The recommended dimensions of an indoor soccer field are 200 x 85 feet (61 x 26 m), but the field can sometimes be a little bigger or smaller depending on the specific location.

Goals are also smaller compared to those of regular outdoor soccer.

Additionally, these fields are surrounded by a wall, with netting above and around the walls and ceiling.

Indoor soccer field

Indoor soccer teams are relatively small; they are composed of 5 field players and a goalkeeper. However, if the team consists of younger children, you might find six outfield players.

The positions and roles of players in indoor soccer are affected by the size of the team.

The duration of this indoor soccer is also different from futsal. Indoor soccer games are broken up into two 30-minute halves or four 15-minute quarters, with a total duration of 60 minutes.

Unlimited substitutions may occur throughout the game during play or stoppages. Substituted players must be off the field of play before their replacement enters the field.

Stoppages in indoor soccer usually occur when the ball goes off the field, when the ball hits the ceiling when a foul occurs, when a goal is scored, or when a period ends.

There are also no offsides in indoor soccer.

Indoor soccer is also not FIFA-regulated; it’s a version of its own with modified rules.

Futsal

Futsal has an even smaller field than indoor soccer. A futsal field can be 138 x 82 feet (42 x 25 m) at its biggest and 125 x 66 ft (38 x 20 m) at its smallest.

Futsal is played on hard surfaces, typically basketball courts. There is also no netting surrounding the walls or ceiling.

Futsal Field

Futsal teams consist of 5 players, 4 of which are outfield players, and 1 is a goalkeeper. Substitutions can happen at any moment during the game and are unlimited.

Like indoor soccer, stoppages in futsal usually happen when the ball goes over the touch or end line, a foul occurs, a goal is scored, or the period ends.

Futsal games are 40 minutes long, divided into two halves that are 20 minutes long each.

Additionally, futsal is FIFA-regulated, unlike indoor soccer.

One of the most notable differences between futsal and indoor soccer is the ball used. The futsal ball is a low-bounce ball smaller than a regular soccer ball.

The aspects of a futsal ball are designed to develop players’ skills, build their confidence in tight passes, and teach them how to have good control of the ball.

Indoor Soccer vs. Futsal Rules

Now that you know the general differences between the two games, you probably won’t be too surprised to learn that each has a similar but subtly different set of rules.

Thankfully, these rules are pretty easy to follow and understand.

I’ll explain each of them now, but for a fuller picture, check out my guide to the rules of indoor soccer.

Indoor Soccer Rules

The rules of indoor soccer are simple and easy to learn. These games are played at a quick pace and have a unique set of rules.

Each indoor soccer game takes 60 minutes in total and is divided into four quarters. Each quarter lasts for 15 minutes.

Between the first, second, third, and fourth quarters, there are two 3-minute breaks. You also get a 15-minute halftime between the second and third quarters.

Here are four more indoor soccer rules:

Infinite Substitutions – You don’t get a limit on substitutions with indoor soccer. Substitutions can be made throughout the game. However, rules can differ depending on what league you’re in.

The “Three Line Indoor Soccer Rule” – Players are not permitted to kick the ball from one end of the field over three lines without having it contact the ground. This stops lengthy shots at the goal taken from a long distance.

Kick-Offs and Kick-Ins Are Indirect – From a kick-off or kick-in, the ball must touch an offensive player before a goal can be scored. This is classified as an indirect kick. Indoor soccer uses kick-ins rather than throw-ons, and the ball must be placed no more than 10 inches behind the line, and the player must kick the ball within 5 seconds. The non-kicking foot of the player must be on the line or outside the box.

No Offside – There is no offside rule in indoor soccer.

Check out this recent indoor soccer game between the US and Mexico to see how the players implement the rules of indoor soccer.

Indoor soccer game between US and Mexico

Futsal Rules

As I mentioned earlier, Futsal is a game of 2 halves of 20 minutes each, meaning the whole game is 40 minutes long.

This is a considerably short time, so to avoid time-wasting, the clock is stopped every time a stoppage occurs. It resumes when the game starts again.

This is a significant difference between both indoor soccer and outdoor soccer, where the clock runs continuously.

In futsal, each team is allowed a one-minute time-out for each half of the game. If one team does not use up their time-out in the first half, they can’t use it in the second half; they still only get one minute in the second half.

It’s also important to note that time-outs are not allowed in extra time.

Here are some more futsal rules:

Unlimited substitutions – There is no limit to the number of substitutions made during a game. They can be brought on at any time.

No Goals From Free Kicks – You can’t score from a direct free kick in Futsal like you can in outdoor soccer.

No Goalkeeper Punts – The ball must stay below head height. Otherwise, the referee will award the other team a free kick and possession.

No Slide Tackles – Players are not allowed to slide tackle but are allowed to slide on the field to stop the ball from going out of play or to stop the ball from going into their goal. The tackler’s opponent must be in control of the ball for sliding to be deemed a foul.

Players That Have Been Sent off Can Be Replaced – When a player gets sent off, there is a mandatory two-minute penalty following their replacement. However, if the player’s team scores a goal after they have been sent off, the replacement can go on the field before the two minutes are up.

Goalkeepers Can Touch the Ball With Their Hands Inside the Penalty Area – Goalkeepers can hold the ball with their hands in the penalty area, but they have to play it to a teammate within four seconds. This goes for whether the goalkeeper has the ball in their hands or at their feet.

No Offside – There is no offside rule in futsal.

Pros and Cons of Indoor Soccer and Futsal

Indoor soccer and futsal are both excellent ways for a player to increase their tactical awareness and fitness. They also help players learn new skills and how to work with teams.

However, there are pros and cons specific to each version of the game.

Indoor Soccer Pros and Cons

Pros:

Wall Bouncing

Kicking the ball against a wall to get past a defender is a clever move that is entertaining to do and see. The ability to use walls to your advantage gives the game a new depth. Walls may be used for passing, evading defenders, and even scoring goals.

Easier for Goalkeepers

Indoor soccer fields have a soft, artificial grass surface. The soft surface makes it easier for beginner goalies to learn to dive and stop the ball.

Cons:

Odd Blocking Angles

Because of the walls, shots in indoor soccer can come from a greater variety of angles. Goalies who play indoor soccer frequently can develop habits and abilities that aren’t beneficial for outdoor soccer.

Futsal Pros and Cons

Pros:

Good Ball Control

The low-bouncing ball that is used for futsal makes players get used to dribbling without continuous bounce. This helps players develop skills that can help them with outdoor soccer. It also prevents them from forming bad habits.

No Wall to Bounce the Ball Off

Since the ball can freely get out of the field, the players in futsal tend to avoid making careless passes.

Cons:

Less Time in the Game

Futsal games only last for 40 minutes, and since the ball can go out of play, players can spend less time in the game. This reduces the time they get to develop their skills and techniques on the field.

Conclusion

While futsal and indoor soccer are different, they are both enjoyable sports to play or watch.

They are both a variation of soccer played on a smaller field with fewer players, making them ideal for those who don’t have access to outdoor fields or many players.

Most people don’t associate a blue card with soccer.

We all know what red and yellow cards mean in the outdoor version of the game, but referees don’t show blue cards in outdoor soccer.

So why does indoor soccer use blue cards, and what do they mean?

In indoor soccer, a blue card is a means to discipline players who commit minor offenses during a game. A blue card indicates that a player must accept a penalty timeout and remove themselves from the game for two minutes. Blue cards are the lowest level of punishment in indoor soccer.

Keep reading, and I’ll explain more about what blue cards mean in indoor soccer.

Blue Card in Indoor Soccer

The referee shows a blue card in indoor soccer to players for minor offenses. These offenses are known as “unsporting behaviors.”

Offenses in indoor soccer include:

Continuous infringements

Violations of safety rules (chewing gum, leaving field exits unlocked, etc.)

Dissent by word or action

Illegal substitutions

Minor physical fouls (referees have to punish players who cause minor physical fouls to control the game)

Spitting on the turf

Encroachment

Too many players on the field

I’ve even seen a player receive a blue card for wearing the wrong cleats to play indoor soccer.

The blue card is also sometimes called a warning card because it warns the player that they must play within the rules or risk further punishment, such as a yellow card or red card.

As mentioned above, a blue card can be given for anything from dissent by word or action against the referee to safety violations.

Let me explain how it works.

Dissent can be shown by either a player’s words, actions, or both.

For example, suppose an opponent tells the referee they did not make a legitimate play because of some illegal move. In that case, this would be dissent by word.

On the other hand, if an opponent kicks or trips an opponent after the play has ended, this can be viewed as dissent by action.

Player committing an offense in indoor soccer

Although no specific offenses are listed on the card itself, players need to know what their offenses in accordance with their league are to avoid committing them in future games.

The referee also decides when not to give a blue card.

For example, suppose a player makes a tackle but pulls his foot away at the last second to avoid making contact with an opponent. In that case, the referee will not view this as a dangerous play and, therefore, will not result in the referee showing a player a blue card.

The use of a blue card in indoor soccer is one of the ways this version of the game differs from futsal. If you want to find out more, check out my article – The Difference Between Indoor Soccer and Futsal.

The Consequences of Receiving a Blue Card in Indoor Soccer

Now that you know why a player can receive a blue card in indoor soccer, what are the consequences for a player given a blue card?

The consequence of a blue card is a penalty timeout. This timeout is typically two minutes long, giving the opposing team a power-play advantage.

“A blue card offense should always be accompanied by a temporary suspension from play.”

Laws of the Game

The player who receives a blue card has to sit in a penalty box or ‘sin bin,’ an area to the side of the field designated for this purpose.

Soccer player sat on the side of the playing area

The team plays one player short until the two minutes are over or the opposing team scores a goal against them.

If the team with the penalty advantage does score a goal against them, the player can return to play immediately.

At the end of a player’s time out of the game, the referee will invite them back onto the field of play to continue participating.

Any indoor soccer player can be shown a blue card by the referee regardless of their role or responsibility within the team.

How Is a Blue Card Different From Other Cards in Soccer?

There are three colors of cards in soccer: red, yellow, and blue.

Each of those cards indicates the severity of an offense and the severity of the consequence.

Let’s briefly talk about how each of the cards differs from one another.

Card Type

Description

Consequence

Blue Card

Only used in indoor soccer. A blue card indicates that a player has committed a minor offense.

The player must leave the field for a short period of time (usually 2 minutes), during which the player’s team is temporarily reduced by one player.

Yellow Card

A yellow card indicates that a player has committed a specific infringement of the rules.

One yellow card means the player has been given a warning, and if a player receives two yellow cards in a single match, they are automatically shown a red card.

Red Card

A red card indicates the player has committed a serious offense or has been shown two yellow cards.

A player is sent off and must leave the field of play immediately. The player cannot be replaced, and the team must play with one fewer player for the remainder of the game. If the player was the goalkeeper, a teammate must take over goalkeeping duties.

The difference between a yellow card, a red card, and a blue card in soccer

Blue Cards

An indoor soccer referee will show players blue cards for minor offenses. This is unique to the rules of indoor soccer.

These include attempting to deceive the referee, failing to respect the encroachment rule, and committing fouls to break up an attack.

These are not the only offenses a player can commit to get a blue card. Scroll back up to the top of the article to review the list we looked at before.

A referee can also issue multiple blue cards within a single game.

Here’s what it means to have multiple blue cards in indoor soccer:

1) First blue card: the player is penalized for two minutes.

2) Second blue card: the player is penalized for two minutes and has yellow card status.

3) Third blue card: the player has red card status, and his team is penalized for five minutes.

Yellow Cards

Yellow cards are issued for more severe offenses than a blue card but for less severe offenses than a red card.

In indoor soccer, yellow cards may be treated as double minors and result in a four-minute timed penalty.

The penalty gets canceled if the opposing team scores a goal after two minutes; otherwise, the player must serve the entire four minutes.

Reasons yellow cards are issued:

Reckless fouls decided by the referee

A tackle from behind

Initiating physical contact with the intention of fighting

Continuous infringement of the rules

The referee can also give yellow cards to goalkeepers if they commit a dangerous foul and several other specific cases.

Check out my article – The Rules of Soccer – for more info.

Red Cards

Red cards are the highest level of cards you can get as a penalty in indoor soccer.

A referee can eject a player, substitute, or coach during, before, or after the game.

They must leave the playing area immediately if they commit an offense. Likewise, a timed five-minute penalty is served in full by a team member.

Soccer referee showing a red card

When a player, coach, or substitute receives a red card, they can no longer participate for the rest of that game and the team’s next league game.

The league administrators usually decide the duration of the suspension.

If misconduct continues after a person receives a red card, additional red cards can be issued.

Reasons red cards are issued:

Tackles that endanger the safety of an opponent

Spitting at an opponent

Abusive language or behavior toward a referee

Physical contact with a referee, assistant referee, or facility staff

Striking an opponent with the intent of harm

Leaving the bench to join an altercation on the field

Any form of violence or fighting

As you can probably tell, these are the severest offenses that players, coaches, or substitutes can commit.

Conclusion

Referees and officials decide which card to give to players depending on the severity of the offense committed.

In case of less severe offenses, the referee may choose not to punish the player with a yellow or red card. Instead, blue cards are issued as a minor punishment or warning.

Learning indoor soccer rules is essential to avoid getting sent off, penalized, or carded.

Whether you are watching or playing indoor soccer, it is helpful to know and understand the positions of the players on the field.

Not only will this make the game more enjoyable, but it can also make you a better fan, player, or coach.

Although the majority of indoor soccer games are played with six players on each team, indoor soccer can be played with 5, 6, or 7 players on each team, depending on the rules of the competition.

The more players involved, the more positions there are in indoor soccer.

Below are all the seven possible positions you will find in an indoor soccer game.

Indoor soccer positions:

Goalkeeper (GK)

Right Defender (RD)

Left Defender (LD)

Right Midfielder/Winger (RM)

Central Midfielder (CM)

Left Midfielder/Winger (LM)

Striker/Center Forward (ST/CF)

These seven positions are a part of 4 major position categories in indoor soccer:

Category

Positions

Goalkeeper

Goalkeeper

Defenders

Right defender, left defender

Forwards

Striker

Midfielders

Right midfielder, central midfielder, left midfielder

Positions in indoor soccer

Knowing the name of each position is a start, but you also need to understand the role and responsibilities of each position if you really want to enjoy the game.

So keep reading as I will be explaining the responsibilities of each position on the field, where they are usually located, and how they play.

Indoor Soccer Positions

1. Goalkeeper

Responsibilities:

The responsibility of the goalie in indoor soccer is to stop the ball before it crosses the goal line and prevent an opponent from scoring a goal.

Location on the field:

The goalkeeper stands anywhere within the area next to the goal line all the way to the edge of the penalty area.

Goalkeeper position in indoor soccer

Description:

Goalkeepers, also referred to as “goalies,” have a great responsibility to fulfill for their team. Therefore, their mental and physical qualities have to be sharp for them to be able to carry out their role.

They are in charge of intercepting or stopping the ball before it crosses the final line.

Their ultimate objective is to stop the opponent from scoring a goal in the net.

They must also maintain great communication with their teammates as they observe their opponents’ movements and warn their teammates to help them counter their opponent’s moves.

A goalkeeper’s role in indoor soccer is often considered to be one that is the hardest and involves the most pressure since these players have to learn a unique set of skills and use them effectively.

2. Right Defender

Responsibilities:

The right-sided defender in indoor soccer must stop the opposite team from crossing the ball into the center of the field.

They are also responsible for keeping their opponents away from their team’s goal.

Location on the field:

The right defender plays on the right-hand side of the field, closer to the goalie.

Right defender position in indoor soccer

Description:

Right defenders are responsible for keeping their opponents out of “danger” areas and stopping them from passing the ball near the goal.

They do this by luring their opponent away or legally blocking them.

The right defender is positioned on the right side of the pitch, in front of the goalie.

They cover against counter-attacks by mostly staying in their position. At the same time, they must be quick to transition back if they do leave their positions.

Defenders in indoor soccer must have good communication skills.

Due to their position, they can see most of the field, which means they have the opportunity to communicate with their teammates and warn them about dangerous movements from the other team.

3. Left Defender

Responsibilities:

The left-sided defender in indoor soccer is responsible for preventing offensive moves from the opposition down the left side of the indoor soccer field.

Location on the field:

The left defender is positioned on the left-hand side of the field, near the goalkeeper.

Left defender position in indoor soccer

Description:

Much like the right defender, the role of a left defender is to defend, but they are also required to provide effective cover if the ball is on the opposite wing.

They must track the ball, keep an eye on their opposing players and late runners to the back post, and open their bodies toward the play.

Their coach will often assign them to mark the opposing right winger, preventing them from getting free and sending in a shot on goal.

They also must cover any players that enter their designated zone and intercept passes from their opponents.

They need to get rid of the ball when it is in their zone and try to stop the ball from going out of play.

The left defender position also has one more responsibility: to get the ball back into play after a stoppage.

When a foul or timeout is called, this player will also be responsible for putting the ball in play again by kicking it back into the center of the field.

4. Right Midfielder/Winger

Responsibilities:

The role of the right midfielder, or winger, is to support forward players by creating goal-scoring opportunities.

Location on the field:

On the right wing, or edge, of the pitch.

Right midfield position in indoor soccer

Description:

A right midfielder in indoor soccer has a variety of responsibilities, but they mostly revolve around creating scoring opportunities for their team.

Players in this position are responsible for pressuring the opposing defenders when they have the ball to make them give it up.

They must run up and down the field as fast as possible so that they are in a position to receive passes and get the ball into the penalty area.

They also must have the ability to finish when given the opportunity in front of the goal.

Likewise, they have to know when to back off of a defender because if they can get the ball, then they may score an easy goal for the team.

Taking advantage of the wall in indoor soccer is key when you are a midfielder. Although similar, this is one way that indoor soccer differs from futsal and outdoor soccer.

5. Central Midfielder

Responsibilities:

A central midfielder’s role in indoor soccer is to constantly be in a position to receive and pass the ball. They also have the responsibility of disrupting the play of the opposition.

Location on the field:

In and around the center of the field.

Central midfielder position in indoor soccer

Description:

A central midfielder in an indoor soccer game has the dual responsibility of creating scoring opportunities and helping defend when the opposing team has the ball.

Players in that position act as a bridge between defense and attack for the team.

Therefore, they must be skilled enough to easily pass the ball, steal it away from opposing players, and make strong tackles when necessary.

Midfielders can move freely up and down the field during play.

These players must be all-around skilled because they will be called upon to perform various tasks in each phase of play, depending on their team’s situation.

This position requires players to have a good sense of the field, make quick decisions on where to go with the ball, and anticipate where opponents are going next.

6. Left Midfielder/Winger

Responsibilities:

The left-sided midfielder, or winger, is responsible for covering the left side of the field and providing support for other players.

Location on the field:

On the left wing, or edge, of the field.

Left midfielder position in indoor soccer

Description:

A left midfielder’s responsibilities in indoor soccer are very similar to those of a left-winger in outdoor soccer.

They play on the left side of the field and try to create scoring opportunities for their team by crossing the ball into the box or taking scoring shots themselves.

They also help with the defense by covering back when needed and helping to stop opposing players from getting too close to the goal down the left side of the field.

Similar to defenders, left-wingers must also have good communication skills to guide their teammates.

The left midfielder typically has a very wide range of motion and will often be seen going up and down the field.

Find out more about this position in my article: Wingers in Soccer: A Complete Guide.

7. Striker

Responsibilities:

A striker’s main responsibility is to score as often as possible.

Location on the field:

Center of the field and close to the opponent’s goal.

Striker position in indoor soccer

Description:

A striker’s primary role is to score goals for their team.

They will often be found lurking on the field between the opposition midfielders and defenders, waiting for an opportunity to receive a pass that can lead to a goal.

One of the differences between a winger and a striker is that the striker plays primarily in the center of the field.

A good striker must be able to score goals as well as create scoring opportunities for their teammates.

In addition to scoring opportunities, strikers are also expected to track back on defense when needed.

This position requires excellent stamina and energy as they often run up and down the field throughout the game.

They should also have excellent ball control and the ability to pass consistently to keep the ball away from defenders.

Conclusion

Each of these indoor soccer positions’ responsibilities might slightly change depending on the style of play and formation your team decides to go with.

It is important to learn each role well to be able to make the most out of each player’s skills.

Understanding the rules of indoor soccer compared to the outdoor version of the game will also help solidify the importance of each player’s role.

Playing indoor soccer can be a fantastic way of staying active even when the weather is not suitable for playing outside.

However, playing soccer indoors is different than playing outside and raises a few questions. One of the most fundamental questions is – “what kind of cleats should you wear when playing soccer indoors?”

While you can sometimes use regular cleats for indoor soccer, it’s not a good idea. Many indoor soccer locations ban regular cleats entirely as the playing surface for indoor soccer is incompatible with standard soccer cleats.

When choosing cleats for indoor soccer games, the best way to know what footwear to use is to look at the ground’s surface.

There are many different types of soccer cleats, and they each give you a strategic advantage depending on the kind of ground you are playing on.

Why You Should Avoid Wearing Outdoor Cleats Indoors

Before taking you through a brief guide on choosing the best cleats for indoor soccer, let me explain why you should not wear regular outdoor soccer cleats for indoor soccer.

While it may seem like a good idea to wear your outdoor cleats inside, I would not recommend it.

The main reason for this is that indoor surfaces are often harder and smoother than outdoor playing fields, so wearing cleats indoors can do more harm than good.

In addition, if you wear regular cleats in an indoor soccer facility, you can damage and scratch the surface.

You will also find that indoor soccer rules don’t allow it.

Outdoor cleats dig into the ground and provide traction as you move. Unfortunately, indoor soccer surfaces are usually solid and don’t permit the cleats to dig into the ground at all.

Using the wrong equipment also risks potentially injuring yourself and other players.

You may also find that the location where you are playing indoor soccer bans outdoor cleats. If you do try wearing outdoor cleats during a game, you may end up with a blue card or even a yellow.

If you want to play your best, reduce the risk of injury and protect the playing surface, I recommend sticking with indoor soccer shoes.

If you are unsure what shoes to purchase, check out these options on Amazon.

By taking in these considerations, you can choose the right cleats, improve your performance on the field no matter what position you are playing, and protect the playing surfaces you are using.

Now let’s look at how to choose the correct footwear for indoor soccer.

How To Choose The Best Footwear For Indoor Soccer

When playing soccer inside, you need the proper footwear to keep up with everyone else’s pace.

There are a few steps you need to follow in order to choose the perfect soccer cleats.

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Look At The Indoor Surface

When it comes to indoor soccer, you may come across a variety of different surfaces.

One of the most common is a hard surface. The hard surface is similar to basketball courts and the hard surfaces they play on.

Hard indoor soccer surface

In other cases, however, you will play indoor soccer on a ground covered in turf.

However, even with this option, there are several turf varieties.

You must consider what footwear is appropriate for the turf you will be playing on.

For example, first-generation astroturf is what used to be the most common surface for indoor soccer.

While it has been replaced as the standard, it is still possible to see this turf. However, it is short and hard, so it needs a specific type of shoe.

On the other hand, current-generation turf is more common to see on indoor soccer grounds these days.

Current-generation indoor soccer turf

This turf is longer and softer and feels a lot like natural grass.

Once you know what kind of surface you will be playing on, you can choose the right cleats to match that surface.

2. Choose Cleats Depending On The Surface

Once you are aware of the space you will be playing soccer in, the next step you need to carry out is to choose the right soccer cleats for the surface you will be playing on.

The good news is that most soccer cleat manufacturers factor suitable surfaces into the marketing campaign.

Watch the video below to differentiate between two kinds of surfaces:

Cleats usually state what kind of surface they are best for. You can often see these designations on your shoes with abbreviations.

Here are the standard soccer cleat designations to watch out for:

Firm Ground (FG)

Soft Ground (SG)

Multi-Ground (MG)

Artificial Grass (AG)

Turf

Indoor

You can find out more about each of these in my article – Each Different Type of Soccer Cleat: Explained.

While these designations are helpful, there are some other things to consider.

In practice, here’s how the shoes match up to the ground surface:

For Playing on Hard Surfaces

You must avoid wearing regular outdoor cleats when playing soccer on a hard surface.

They will only become a hindrance on a harder surface.

Instead, it would be best if you opted for indoor soccer shoes.

These have a softer, rubber-based sole, allowing you to run fast and efficiently grip the floor’s hard surface. That way, you can gain greater agility and movement and are less likely to lose your balance.

For Playing on First Generation Turf

With astroturf, you must put away your regular soccer cleats once again.

Keep in mind that this turf has very small and short blades of grass. In addition, they are on top of a typically harder surface, so there is not much to grip when you are playing on the surface.

The best choice when playing with this kind of surface is a turf shoe, which has very short nubs that can grab onto the plastic blades of grass.

Otherwise, you can also play on this surface with your indoor soccer shoes.

For Playing on Current Generation Turf

For this type of surface, you can use multiple types of cleats, depending on the surface and the advantages you want to get while playing.

One of the best choices out there is an artificial glass cleat. These come with a firm sole and shorter studs that help you stay in control while moving fast.

You can also use firm ground cleats if you play on this turf.

This is because these cleats have fewer studs and a more robust sole than artificial grass cleats.

However, these shoes are designed for play on the ground with dirt and help you get traction by pushing through the grass.

They may not be the best choice for turf, but they can work as an option if necessary.

The multi-ground cleats are an interesting middle ground between artificial grass features and firm ground cleats.

These combine the stud design from both shoes to give you a versatile option that can work with most types of surfaces.

For example, having circular and bladed studs simultaneously gives you both traction and strength.

Final Thoughts

Always consider the kind of indoor surface you will be playing on, and choose your cleats accordingly.

Each type of cleat is designed for specific surfaces, so using the wrong ones can lead to injury and decreased performance on the field.

And when in doubt, indoor soccer shoes are a safe choice to use on any indoor surface.
