As the world’s most-watched sporting event, the FIFA World Cup brings together soccer players from every corner of the globe once every four years.

Despite its universal appeal, only some spectators know the regulations governing participation in this tournament, specifically those concerning age.

There is no minimum or maximum age limit for soccer players participating in the FIFA World Cup. Players of any age can compete, provided they are selected by their national body.

There is a widespread assumption that the World Cup is a competition for players within a specific age bracket; however, the reality of age restrictions – or the lack thereof – may surprise many.

In this article, I will dive into the intricacies of age requirements for FIFA World Cup participation, shedding light on a rarely-discussed subject.

Why There Is No Age Limit (Minimum Or Maximum) at the World Cup

In many sports, age is considered a key determinant of physical capability and prowess, leading to divisions or restrictions based on age.

As an example of this:

Players must be three years post high school to compete in the NFL

NHL and MLB players must be at least 18 years old

And the NBA requires players to be at least 19 years old. source

At the professional level, soccer does not require any minimum or maximum age limits for participants.

This is primarily due to two significant factors: physical maturity and skill.

Physical Maturity: Soccer is a sport where physical maturity doesn’t always correlate with a player’s performance. A young player can be physically mature enough to compete with older players, and an older player can maintain physical fitness well into their later years. The physical demands of soccer are significant but not such that they automatically exclude younger or older players.

Skill: Skill plays a more significant role in soccer than physical maturity. Players can develop the necessary skills to play professionally at a relatively young age. Conversely, experienced players can use their honed skills, game intelligence, and strategic understanding to offset any physical decline due to aging.

The lack of age restrictions, not just at the world cup but also in soccer generally, also promotes inclusivity and equal opportunity across the game.

As long as a player possesses the necessary skills and can endure the game’s physical demands, age should not be a barrier to participation.

Nevertheless, it’s important to note that while FIFA doesn’t enforce a specific age limit for the World Cup, individual soccer clubs and national federations often have age regulations for their youth development programs and national competitions.

These guidelines are in place to ensure fair competition and appropriate player development.

Therefore, even without an official age limit at the World Cup issued by FIFA, the system naturally curates players of a certain age range.

The opening game of Women’s World Cup 2023

Example Of Youngest And Oldest Players To Participate In The World Cup

The FIFA World Cup has seen a broad age range of players participating throughout its history.

This has allowed some notable records to be set at both ends of the age spectrum.

Youngest Player to Appear at a World Cup

The youngest player to ever participate in the World Cup was Northern Ireland’s, Norman Whiteside. He was just 17 years and 41 days old when he first appeared in the tournament during the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

Despite his young age, his performance was impressive, helping Northern Ireland reach the quarterfinals – the nation’s best ever World Cup result.

Check out this video of Norman Whiteside to understand what a great soccer player he was.

Oldest Player to Appear at a World Cup

Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El Hadary is the oldest player to participate in a world cup game. He played during the 2018 World Cup at the age of 45 years, five months, and ten days.

El Hadary made his historic appearance during Egypt’s final group stage match against Saudi Arabia, where he also managed to save a penalty, demonstrating that age did not diminish his skills and reflexes.

El Hadary’s record-setting performance emphasizes that age is no barrier to showcasing talent on the world’s biggest stage, and it further adds to the diversity and inclusivity of this global tournament.

Check out this video of Essam El Hadary’s greatest moments.

How The Lack Of Age Limit At The World Cup Compares To Other Soccer Competitions

The absence of an age limit in the FIFA World Cup contrasts with the age restrictions imposed in other major soccer tournaments, such as the Olympics and the FIFA U-20 and U-17 World Cups.

These competitions have specific age rules to create a level playing field and, in some cases, foster youth development.

Age Limit for Olympic Soccer

The Olympic soccer tournament is an interesting case because it’s primarily an Under-23 competition.

However, since the 1992 Barcelona Games, the rules have allowed each team to include up to three ‘over-age’ players, who can be older than 23.

This rule was introduced to increase the competition’s appeal and give it a unique identity compared to other football tournaments.

Find out more about Why Olympic soccer has an age limit.

FIFA U-20 and U-17 World Cups

The FIFA U-20 and U-17 World Cups, as their names suggest, are strictly age-restricted tournaments.

Players must be under the age of 20 or 17, respectively, at the start of the year in which the tournament begins.

These competitions aim to showcase emerging young talent and provide a platform for youth players to gain international experience.

Tournaments like the Olympics, U-20, and U-17 World Cups play a crucial role in nurturing young talent and preparing them for bigger stages like the World Cup.

However, the absence of an age limit in the FIFA World Cup allows for a broader range of talent, experience, and ages to participate.

It creates a platform where teenage prodigies can share the field with seasoned veterans, adding to the unpredictability and allure of the tournament.

Spectator’s view of World Cup game

Why Other Levels of Soccer Have Age Limits

Age limit rules play a vital role in shaping youth development programs in sports, providing structured environments for young athletes to nurture their skills and transition to professional levels.

Despite not having age limits at the professional level, including the World Cup, soccer features several age-specific competitions designed to promote youth development.

Here’s how such rules influence youth development programs:

Structured Growth and Skill Development:

Age limit rules allow for categorizing youth players into different groups based on age, enabling them to compete against players with similar physical maturity and skill levels.

This creates a more balanced and fair competition, crucial for player development and confidence building.

Player Safety and Wellbeing:

Setting age limits in youth soccer helps protect younger players from the physical and psychological pressures of competing against significantly older and more experienced players. This is particularly important in contact sports like soccer, where physical disparities can lead to injuries.

Talent Identification and Progression:

Age-specific competitions, like the FIFA U-17 and U-20 World Cups, serve as crucial talent identification and scouting platforms.

They offer young players the opportunity to showcase their abilities internationally, which can fast-track their progression into professional clubs or senior national teams.

Long-Term Athlete Development:

Age limit rules are an essential component of Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) models, designed to maximize an athlete’s potential and longevity in the sport. These models consider athletes’ physical, mental, and emotional development at different ages, allowing for appropriate training, competition, and recovery programs.

Preparing for the Professional Level:

For those aiming to compete in professional tournaments like the FIFA World Cup, age-restricted competitions provide valuable experience and gradually prepare players for higher levels of competition.

They learn to adapt to different play styles, handle the pressures of high-stakes games, and develop an understanding of international soccer.

While the lack of age limits in the World Cup allows for inclusivity and diversity, age-limit rules in youth soccer play an integral role in fostering talent, promoting fair competition, and ensuring player safety.

Both are crucial for the overall health and future of the sport.

Substitutions are a foundational element of soccer. But not every player wants to be substituted when the time comes. If this leaves you wondering if a player could refuse to be substituted if they disagree with the coach’s decision, here’s the answer.

A soccer player can refuse to be substituted. Soccer rules don’t require a player to leave the field simply because their coach decides they want to substitute them. The player has the freedom to stay on the field or leave.

However, you probably don’t need me to point out that if a player declines to leave the field of play, then they will not be in their coach’s good books!

In this article, I am going to show you:

What the rules of soccer say about substitutions

Some examples of when players have refused to be subbed

The potential consequences of refusing to be substituted

And why a player may refuse to leave.

Let’s jump right in!

Player about to come on as a substitute

Rules of substitutions

All substitutions in soccer have to abide by the rules set out by FIFA and the IFAB.

I’ve covered the rules of substitutions in-depth in my guide to the 10 Soccer Substitution Rules if you want to see the rules in detail.

But to give you a quick overview here regarding a player choosing to leave the field, there is one line in the rules that specifically applies to this situation.

“If a player who is to be substituted refuses to leave, play continues”
IFAB Laws of the Game

The soccer lawmakers knew that there would be occasions when a player would refuse to be substituted. Players can make up their own minds during a game and may choose to continue participating.

Instead of letting this become a cause for delay in a game and increasing the stoppage time, the rules allow the referee to simply continue the game in this scenario.

The rules don’t require players to leave if they wish to stay on the field.

And this isn’t just a hypothetical situation. Several times, players have insisted on continuing playing even when their number comes up.

Three examples of players refusing to be substituted

One of the most well-known occasions where a player refused to be substituted was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2017.

Cristiano Ronaldo – 2017

In April 2017, Cristiano Ronaldo was still playing for Real Madrid.

Real Madrid had made it to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, where they faced Bayern Munich. Real were losing the second-leg of the game 2-1 when coach Zinedine Zidane decided he would substitute Ronaldo for Asensio.

However, when the fourth official held up the board to signal the substitution, Ronaldo simply waved the decision away and refused to leave the field.

Thankfully for him, this turned out to be a great decision.

Zidane ended up substituting Kroos instead of Ronaldo, and Ronaldo went to score two more goals in the game to complete his hat-trick and win the game for Real Madrid on aggregate.

Check out the highlights of the game below.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic – 2010

Soccer legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic is another player who has refused to be substituted when his coach wanted him off the field.

While playing for AC Milan in 2010, Milan’s coach Max Allegri decided to substitute Ibrahimovic when he seemed to suffer an injury after scoring against Fiorentina.

But Zlatan had other thoughts. He wanted to continue, and nothing was going to change his mind.

Allegri accepted the decision and the game continued with Zlatan Ibrahimovic very much a part of the team.

Lionel Messi – 2014

In the past, Lionel Messi has also refused to be substituted.

Back in 2014, Barcelona were playing against fellow Spanish side Eibar.

Luis Enrique, who was then the head coach of Barcelona, decided he wanted to remove Messi and give him a rest for the last few minutes of the game.

At this point, Barca were leading by three goals, and Messi had already scored.

However, Messi decided he didn’t want to be substituted and believed he had more to offer the game.

After a lot of hand-waving from both Messi and his coach, Messi continued the playing, and Neymar was replaced instead of him.

Have a look at the event in the video below.

[source]

The consequences of refusing to be substituted

As I mentioned right at the beginning, you don’t need me to tell you that any player who refuses to leave the field when their coach asks them to leave will not be popular.

They should probably expect a dressing down from the coach after the game and have to explain their actions.

They may also lose their coach’s trust when it comes to following orders and directions in a game.

If they can justify their choices, they may find themselves back in the good books sooner than expected. And if they follow Ronaldo’s lead and go on to score two goals to win the game, they may already be in the coach’s good books before the game has even ended!

Although it is a dangerous game to refuse the coach’s wishes, there are a few reasons why a player may make that choice.

Why a player may refuse to be subbed

When it comes to the reasons why a player may refuse to be substituted, we have to see the decision in light of what is happening in the game.

One major factor for players refusing to be substituted is that they are taking part in an important game.

There are only so many times in a player’s career that significant games come along, so if a player feels like they are enjoying the experience, they may not want it to end.

It may also be the case the player still has something to prove.

Suppose they have made a mistake earlier in the game, or they feel like they are about to contribute in a significant way. In that case, they may want the extra time to continue their involvement.

Whatever the reason is that a player wants to continue playing, it takes a brave player to reject their coach’s wishes.

When you watch soccer, you see teams making multiple substitutions throughout a game. If you’re wondering what the rules are regarding these subs, then you’ve come to the right place! I’m going to explain how substitutions work and what rules teams must follow.

Soccer Substitution Rules:

A team must name substitutes before kick-off

Only players named as substitutes can take part in the game

A team can make a maximum of 5 subs during a game

Return substitutions are not permitted in professional soccer

A player can only enter during a stoppage in play

A coach can make all substitutions at the same time

The coach must inform the referee before a team makes a substitution

The referee must give permission for a player to leave

The player entering the field must follow the correct procedure

A substitution is complete once the substitute is on the field of play

Each of these rules deserves a little more explanation.

In this article, I’ll explain what each of these rules means and why they are essential for the game of soccer.

Let’s get started.

10 Soccer Substitution Rules

1. All Substitutes Must Be Named Before Kick-off

The first rule of substitutions in soccer is that each team must submit a list of substitutes before the first kick of the game.

The list of players starting the game on the field and the players that will begin on the bench must be given to the game officials.

The number of substitutes that a team can name will vary depending on the competition and the level of soccer.

For instance, the English Premier League allows teams to name 9 substitutes for each game. Whereas for a national “A” team game, a team may be permitted to name 12 substitutes.

2. Only Named Substitutes Can Participate in a Game

The list of named substitutes is essential because these are the only players that can replace another player during the game.

This restriction encourages coaches to think carefully about who they select for the substitute’s bench.

For example, not having a substitute goalie would be a problem if the goalkeeper on the team needed replacing. Or, if a coach wanted to increase the offensive capabilities of their team partway through a game, they would need several attacking options they could use from the sidelines.

5 substitutes on the sidelines

3. Substitutions Are Limited to Five Players per Team

Although a team may be entitled to name up to 12 players as substitutes, there is a limit on how many substitutes a coach can use during a game.

In professional soccer, teams can only use five substitutes during a game.

In my article clarifying the number of subs permitted in soccer, I explain the multiple reasons for this limit in detail, and you can explore them there.

The only time this rule doesn’t apply is in youth soccer or international friendly games.

In youth soccer, you will often find that the governing bodies will allow an unlimited number of substitutions. This is because younger players are not always physically developed enough for the demands of an entire soccer game.

To compensate for this, the coach can substitute their players as many times as they believe necessary. For more info on substitutions on youth soccer, check out my article – Youth Soccer Rules: Everything you need to know.

In an international friendly game, the reason is different. At this level, the players are more than capable of completing an entire game.

The rules permit more than five substitutions in this scenario because one of the main reasons for the game is to experiment with different players, positions, and formations. Changing players in and out allows this to happen.

4. Return Substitutions Are Not Permitted in Pro Soccer

Unlike some other sports, soccer rules do not permit return substitutions.

A substitute can not return to the field of play after being replaced by another player. Instead, the substituted player must stay on their team’s bench or return to their changing room until the game has finished.

This rule prevents players from coming on and off the field and disrupting the game’s flow.

Similarly, a player can not be substituted twice in a game. But, again, because a player cannot return to the field after being replaced, there is no option to substitute a player more than once.

However, it is possible to remove a player that has entered as a substitute, as you can find out in my article – In Soccer Can You Substitute a Substitute?

Similar to before, these rules apply to pro, college, and high school soccer but are different in youth soccer.

During a youth soccer game, you may see players taking turns to play in the game. This rule prevents the young players from becoming exhausted and gives all the players a chance for some game time.

5. A Substitution Can Only Be Made During a Stoppage in Play

No matter what level of soccer you are involved in or watching, substitutions can only be made at specific moments during a game.

A substitution can only be made during a stoppage in play. After the referee has blown their whistle to signal a break in play, they will signal to the bench that they are happy for the team to make a substitution. Only then can the substitute enter the field.

A stoppage in play can include:

Any time the ball goes out of play

Any time a player commits a foul

or any time a player scores a goal

6. A Coach Can Make All Their Substitutions at the Same Time

For most soccer games, a team will not make all their substitutions at the same time. However, the rules do not say a team has to operate this way.

A coach can make all their substitutions simultaneously if they want. When the referee signals permission to make a substitution, a team can choose how many players are changed at that moment up to the maximum number permitted within the rules.

You won’t see this happening very often. There is an advantage for a team to stagger substitutions throughout a game. This allows a coach to continuously assess what is happening on the field and respond accordingly.

If the coach uses all their subs too early, they cannot respond to any injuries or tactical changes later in the game.

Or, if they leave all their substitutions until later in the game, they may miss the opportunity to positively affect the game’s development earlier on.

There is significant pressure on the coach to make the right call at the right time.

7. The Coach Must Inform the Referee Before a Substitution

A team must not make a substitution before informing the referee of their desire to do so.

At the pro level of soccer, the referee and other game officials communicate via an earpiece and microphone headset that each official wears.

These communication devices enable the fourth or sideline official to easily communicate to the central referee when a team wants to make a substitution.

At lower levels of soccer, where the game officials do not have electronic means of communication, the coach will have to wave or shout at the referee during a stoppage in play to signal their intention of making a substitution.

Referee signaling substitution

8. The Referee Must Give Permission for a Substitution

Once the coach has informed the referee of a team’s desire to make a substitution, the referee must give permission for the exchange of players to go ahead.

Before giving permission, the referee will have to consider three things:

If it is appropriate for the team to make a substitution at this stoppage in play

How many subs the team have previously made

and if the player coming on has already appeared for the team in this game

After the ref is satisfied that the substitution can go ahead, they will signal to the bench that they are happy. The team will then immediately make the substitution.

9. A Substituted Player Must Follow the Procedure for Entering the Field

For a player to enter the field of play, they must follow a specific procedure.

This procedure includes two main requirements:

The player must enter at the halfway line

The player can only enter the field after the player being replaced has left

This rule prevents players from coming on from any area of the pitch and potentially not being spotted by the referee.

It also prevents more than the permitted number of players from being on the field at one time.

It’s worth noting that although a player can only enter the field at a specific location, the player leaving the field can exit at the point nearest to their current location.

For example, if the coach was about to replace their goalkeeper, the current goalie could leave the field behind their team’s goal. But the incoming goalie must still enter at the halfway line.

10. A Substitution Is Complete Once the Substitute Is on the Field

The substitution procedure is complete once the incoming player has entered the field.

At this point, the coach cannot change their mind and stop the substitution or choose another player to come onto the pitch.

If the team wants to bring on another player, they need to make another substitution.

While watching or playing soccer, you will probably have noticed that each team makes multiple substitutions during a game. These subs are not arbitrary, and there are strict rules around how and when teams can substitute a player. The most significant rule is how many subs a single team can make during a game.

Each team is allowed to make a maximum of five substitutions during a soccer game. The rules state that a team can only substitute a player during a stoppage in play and when the referee grants permission. The number of substitutes is limited to prevent too much interference during the game.

Substitution rules in soccer are different from many other sports so let’s look at substitutions in more detail to understand how the rules work.

Number of Substitutions Allowed in Soccer

Throughout soccer history, the number of substitutions permitted has evolved to where we are now.

A total of 5 substitutions per team are allowed in a game of soccer. These can be made at any break in play throughout the game as long as the referee allows it. Until 2020 a team could only make three substitutions during a game.

There are only two significant exceptions to this substitution limit.

In International friendly soccer games

and in youth soccer

In a non-competitive game such as a friendly match between two international teams, you may often see more than five substitutions allowed.

More than five substitutions are allowed in an international game because one of the main reasons for these games is to try out some players and tactics in a non-competitive environment.

Multiple substitutions allow teams to change their players regularly throughout a game.

In youth soccer, there is often no limit on substitutions. This is because the players are often not yet physically ready for the demands of an entire game and need to rest to avoid injury.

Because of these, you may see more than five substitutions used during a game at the youth soccer level.

For more info on youth soccer, check out my guide to youth soccer rules.

How the Substitution Limit Has Changed Over Time

The rules and limits currently in place regarding substitutions are not how they have always been.

Making a substitution of any sort in a soccer game was first introduced in 1958. (Although the concept was experimented with at times before that, including in the qualifying games of the 1954 World Cup.)

At this stage, only one substitution of an outfield player was permitted per team. You could also substitute the goalkeeper if necessary, but that was it.

Then in 1988, the number of substitutes allowed increased to 2, and in 1995 the IFAB permitted three substitutions per game.

From 2018 there was an allowance in the rules for a 4th substitution to be made if a game continued into extra time. But teams could only use this in specific soccer competitions such as the Champions League and Europa League.

The next significant change wasn’t until 2020 when FIFA changed the rules to allow teams to make five substitutions per game.

Although this move was temporary at first, it proved a popular decision. So in 2021, the lawmakers of the game recommended the rules of soccer permanently allow 5 substitutes per team during a game.

For more information on the rules of the game, check out my guide – The Rules of Soccer: A Beginners Guide.

The Reasons Soccer Limits the Number of Substitutions

If you have watched more than one soccer game, you will have seen the coach making a substitution. But there is always a limit to how many substitutions a team can make.

Why does soccer limit subs? The main reason for limiting subs, or substitutions, in soccer is to prevent too much interference with play once the game is underway. Unlimited substitutions could significantly disrupt the game’s flow and potentially cause an unfair advantage to one of the teams.

There are several reasons why soccer allows the number of substitutions it does during a game. Let me explain them to you now.

Soccer substitutes on the bench

Limits Interference During a Game

One of the main ideas behind this limitation is to allow the game to keep going and not interfere too much with what is happening.

Allowing multiple substitutions during a game could force an excessive amount of breaks in play.

You may have seen this for yourself.

In some non-competitive or “friendly” soccer games, there is no limit on the number of substitutions that a team can make. As a result, these games can often feel like they constantly stop to let yet another player join the game.

All these breaks negatively affect the momentum of the game.

Reduces the Impact of Substitute Getting up to Speed

It takes time for a substitute to catch up to the pace of the game.

I remember multiple times coming on as a substitute and feeling as though it took me 20 minutes to be mentally and physically operating at the same pace as the players already on the field.

You have to remember that the players who started the game have been operating a full speed from the moment the game started.

In contrast, players on the sidelines have either just been sitting or doing some light exercise to keep warm. So it’s a big jump to go from that to giving it all.

Forces Adequate Tactical Preparation

Limiting the substitutions also gives more weight to the tactical preparation of the team.

In other sports, such as Football, different players, or groups of players, come on for different plays. In soccer, this isn’t an option.

All the 11 players starting the game have to be aware of multiple different tactical options and techniques they may need to use depending on how the game goes.

A good soccer coach will have prepared their team for several scenarios and clearly explained how they want them to adapt in those instances.

Soccer coach instructing players

Challenges the Coach’s Decisions

The substitution limit forces the players not just to be physically fit but also encourages the coach to be tactically aware.

Limited substitutions mean the coach has to think very carefully about what players they want to introduce to a game.

The coach can’t just throw on a player, see if it improves things, and then just try someone else if it’s not working.

The coach has to know their players, how they perform, and which player will be best to make any changes the coach feels the team needs.

It Prevents Bigger Clubs From Gaining an Unfair Advantage

An unlimited amount of substitutions could also give a potential advantage to the team that can acquire the best players.

Clubs such as Real Madrid or Manchester United, which are among the richest soccer clubs in the world, have an unparalleled ability to pay for the best players in the world to play for them.

If they have the option to have the best starting 11 and replace that 11 with the next best 11 in the world partway through a game, that would be a significant advantage.

A team that wasn’t in the same financial position and whose substitutes weren’t as talented would struggle to compete.

A Game Has to Have Rules

Now, on one level, you may argue that there doesn’t need to be a “reason” to introduce a rule into a sport.

There have to be some rules in any sport to give it some structure, right?! So why not a restriction on subs?

And there probably is some weight to that argument. But with any rule, several factors are considered when the decision is made.

Allows the Game to Be Affected by the Player’s Condition

Another reason that I haven’t yet mentioned is the fact that having a limit allows the game to be affected by the stamina and endurance of the players.

This applies to both physical and mental endurance.

You may initially think that this could only have a negative effect. When players get tired, the quality of the game will go down. And you would probably be right.

But you have to remember that, ultimately, soccer is a sport played and watched for entertainment.

If soccer is for entertainment, why don’t you see more cheerleaders during the breaks in the game? Find out in my article: Does Soccer have cheerleaders?

As the game gets nearer to the end, players naturally get more tired, and because of this, the game is more likely to open up.

This has the potential to provide an exciting end to any game.

Challenges Players to Stay Fit

This also incentivizes the players to maintain a high level of fitness.

If every player knew the coach would just substitute them as soon as they get tired, some players might not worry about their ability to last to the end of the game.

Soccer players spend a large part of their week’s training hard, aiming to improve their abilities both with the ball and without.

This incentive to increase their stamina and athletic ability has the effect that they should perform at a higher level for longer in a game.

Find out how a soccer player trains and specific workouts that the pros use in my article: “How a Soccer Player trains.”

It Makes the Game About More Than Just Tactics

It also prevents the game from simply becoming about the tactical side of things.

Suppose the coach could substitute a player as often as they wanted. In that case, the likelihood is that they would keep bringing in new players based on what was happening in the game at that time.

The advantage of not being able to do this is that you have to have more well-rounded players playing from the start. Players who are both tactically aware as well as physically and mentally fit.

Theoretically, every spectator should see a higher quality game if they’re watching players of higher physical and mental ability.

Limiting the number of subs is a win for the players, the coaches, and the spectators.

A goal is one of the most important parts of soccer, but not everyone fully understands what exactly a goal is.

In this article, I want to take the time to clearly explain the different definitions of what a goal is and the rules of soccer that apply to a goal.

Hopefully, you’ll get to the end of this article feeling you now know much more about a goal in soccer than you did when you arrived here.

In soccer, there are two definitions for a goal:

A goal is a frame at either end of the soccer field consisting of 2 vertical goalposts and 1 horizontal crossbar on top of and connecting the 2 goalposts.

A goal is scored in soccer when the ball completely passes over the goal line, between the goalposts, and beneath the crossbar at either end of the soccer field.

These two definitions are both used to explain what a goal is, but clearly refer to two different things. They are, however, both important to understand to fully appreciate the game of soccer.

Let’s first look in more detail at what it means to score a goal, before going on to look at the details of the goal frame on a soccer field.

Scoring a Goal in Soccer

Scoring a goal is one of the most exciting moments of any game.

To score a goal in soccer the ball must travel over the goal line between the goalposts and under the crossbar at either end of the field. A player can use any part of their body, except their hands or arms, to score a goal.

The feeling of seeing the ball hit the back of the net and win the game for your team is incredible and stays with you for a long time.

Just look at this video below of soccer players celebrating after scoring a goal to get an idea of how great the moment feels!

Watching the team you support score a goal can be almost as good, but it’s not quite the same as scoring yourself!

The feeling of excitement when a player scores are so intense because of the significance of the moment and the value of that goal for their team.

How Many Points Is a Goal Worth in Soccer?

Once someone understands what a goal is they then want to know what a soccer goal is worth and how many points it gives a team.

A goal in soccer is worth one point. The referee awards one point every time a team scores a goal, no matter where the goal is scored from or how a player scored the goal. Once the game ends, the number of points, or goals, are added together, and the team with the most points wins.

Scoring a goal is so valuable because that is how a soccer team collects points. And the more points a team collects then the greater their chance of winning the game.

The reason for this is that the team that has scored the most goals at the end of the game and therefore collected the most points is the winner of the game.

How many points a team is awarded after a game is a different matter that I’ll explain in just a moment, but I quickly wanted to highlight one more element of this before we move on.

Every type of goal is worth only 1 point.

Unlike a sport such as basketball, where the number of points awarded can vary, in soccer, a team can only ever score one point from a goal.

It doesn’t matter where the player took the shot from or how they scored, a goal is worth one point to their team.

But there are specific rules that a player must stick to if they want their goal to be counted.

Rules for Scoring a Goal

According to the official rules of the game of soccer, a goal is scored when the entire ball passes over the goal line at the same time as passing between the two goalposts and under the crossbar.

A goal being scored is also dependant on no offense having been committed by the team scoring the goal at this moment or in the moments immediately preceding this.

There are a few critical things to highlight here:

The whole ball has to have crossed the goal line for it to be counted as a goal. Even if a tiny fraction of an inch or mm has not crossed the line then no goal is awarded. This is shown in the image above. With the modern technology used in soccer, a referee can find out if this is the case.

What a team does in the moments before a goal matters. Even if the ball has crossed the goal line the referee may judge that an offense was committed by the goal-scoring team immediately before this happened and the goal is then disallowed.

There is no room for negotiation or compromise with these rules.

For example, if a goalie catches the ball behind the goal line then it is still counted as a goal as the ball has fulfilled the criteria of a goal being scored.

A goal has been scored because the position of the goalie is irrelevant. What matters is the position of the ball and the ball alone.

In fact, if the goalie has the ball in their hands and under control but for some reason then carries the ball over the goal line, between the goalposts, and under the crossbar, then a goal is awarded to the other team.

Interestingly there is actually one situation where the ball can meet the criteria set out above for a goal but not be counted as a goal. This only happens when a goalie has thrown the ball into the goal.

If the goalie throws the ball into the opposition’s net then it isn’t considered a goal.

Apart from the fact that it would be a very impressive feat for a goalie to throw the ball from one end of the field to the other(!), the reason for this is that in another part of the rules of soccer it is seen as an offense to deliberately handle the ball in an attempt to score a goal.

If this happens then a goal kick is awarded to the opposition and the game then carries on.

How these goals affect a team after the game is determined by soccer’s scoring system.

Soccer Scoring System

At the end of a game, the organizers of the league the game is a part of will also award each team a number of points.

Thankfully the soccer scoring system is fairly straightforward to understand. Here’s an explanation of how soccer scoring works.

Soccer scoring system:

If a team ends the game having scored more goals than the opposition they are awarded 3 points.

If both teams end the game having scored the same amount of goals they are both awarded 1 point.

If a team ends the game having scored fewer goals than the opposition they are awarded 0 points.

A team receives three points if they win, one point for a tie, and zero points if they lose a game.

As you can see, ultimately, the amount of goals scored by a team isn’t the most important factor in a game. What matters most is that one team ends the game with more goals than the other team.

Your team can score 8 goals in a game, but if the opposition scores 9 goals, you will lose the game and won’t be awarded any points.

But you can also score 1 single goal in a game and as long as your team doesn’t concede any goals you will win the game and receive a maximum of 3 points on offer.

This scoring system can lead different teams to play in very different ways.

Some teams will try and score as many goals as they can to outscore the opposition while other teams will do all they can to not concede any goals and hope to score a goal themselves when they have the chance to attack.

Either way, at the end of the game the team with the most goals scored receives the most points.

The Goal Frame

Having looked at the definition of what a goal is let’s move on to the second meaning of a goal – the frame at either end of a soccer field.

At either end of a soccer field, there stands a metal structure known as a goal. If you’ve ever seen a soccer field I’m sure you will have noticed them.

Usually painted white, the goal is the focal point of the game for each team. In a game of soccer, the more times a team can get the ball into the goal, the higher the chances are that they will be the winners of the game.

A soccer goal has to meet very specific requirements to ensure fairness between all teams that play each other and the soccer fields they play on.

According to the official laws of the game of soccer, a soccer goal must:

Be placed on the center of the goal line at both ends of the field

Consists of two vertical posts an equal distance away from the corner flagposts. The posts must be joined at the top by a horizontal crossbar and can be square, rectangular, round or elliptical in shape.

Have a distance between the inside of the posts of 8 yards (7.32m)

Have a distance from the lower edge of the crossbar to the ground of 8 ft (2.44 m).

Be white and have the same width and depth all the way around. The width and depth cannot exceed 5 inches (12cm)

Be firmly secured to the ground and not be dangerous

It can have a net attached to it and the ground as long as it doesn’t interfere with the goalie in any way.

All over the world, you will see goals on soccer fields that look exactly alike. Perfectly matching these requirements.

In case you were wondering about the purpose of having a net attached to a goal, the idea is simply to stop the ball after it has passed through the goal frame.

Rather than having to chase the ball behind the goal, the ball is stopped by the net and is ready to be picked up and used to restart the game.

Conclusion and Recommendations

Because soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world, you can find hundreds of thousands of soccer fields worldwide. But you may ask if all these soccer fields are the same size or if the dimensions vary from one field to the next. So, after playing on hundreds of different soccer fields, let me share with you what I know about the size of the fields.

Soccer fields are not all the same size. Except for U.S. Youth soccer league games and professional soccer adult competitions, there is no official requirement for the size of the playing field. The size of a soccer field is determined by the number of players, the space the team can afford, and the preferred playing style of the home team.

Soccer fields vary in size for several good reasons. And even at a professional level, the size of the field can be different from one field to the next.

In this article, I’ll explain the three most important factors for deciding on the measurements of the field. I’ll show you why this matters, and we’ll look at the requirements for both adult competition and youth soccer.

Why are Soccer Fields Different Sizes?

The popularity of soccer means that soccer fields have been consistently constructed throughout the history of the sport.

This level of development required some restrictions and rules to be developed around the size of the playing area to bring a level of similarity throughout the fields.

However, despite the required similarities, the rules of soccer actually allow a reasonable amount of flexibility when it comes to the length and width of the field.

Now, if you’ve ever been involved in basketball or football, you’ll know that the playing area for both these sports must comply with specific requirements.

The relevant governing bodies for these sports don’t allow any flexibility in the dimensions of the field.

For example, the measurements for a football field must be 100 yards (120 counting the end zones), or 360 feet long, and 53 ⅓ yards, or 160 feet wide.

This doesn’t change, and every football field you find with an official NFL team or college football team will be the same size.

But if the field dimensions stay the same in other sports, why do they vary in soccer?

There are three reasons why the size of soccer fields varies:

the home team’s playing style,

what the club can afford,

and the players’ physical ability.

Regulation soccer field dimensions

1. The Playing Style of the Home Team

Stadiums and clubs will often choose the size of the field by determining the playing style of their home team in order to give them an edge.

If the stadium’s home team’s strength lies in defensive tactics such as “closing down,” it might be more effective to accomplish this strategy with a smaller playing zone.

Closing down is a defensive strategy where once an opposing team member has the ball, the whole home team starts closing in on that player in order to fluster the opposition with the ball and give them little time to choose a path to pass the ball.

On the other hand, maybe the home team shines at possessing the ball.

Possession is an offensive tactic where the team short passes the ball to one another to keep the opposing team from taking the ball from any single home team player.

This requires good awareness from the whole team over the entire field.

A larger playing area would be helpful when trying to play a possession-based game.

2. The Budget of the Club

The budget of a soccer team is another factor.

Not all clubs in soccer leagues can afford to purchase large areas that give them the space to include large fields.

Even if they can find the space, regular maintenance of the field or creating frequent changes to the size gets expensive.

It’s in the best interest of the smaller leagues and clubs who don’t have nationwide or worldwide renown to purchase cheaper lots, which are typically smaller.

3. The Ability of the Players

The third reason is to do with the ability of the players that are using the field.

Soccer clubs with younger players and/or inexperienced players won’t begin playing on fields with the maximum standard measurements reserved for the pros.

A regulation soccer game lasts for 90 minutes, but in order to compensate for children and inexperienced players who might not be in top shape yet, and therefore not have the stamina for the larger fields, the area is made smaller.

Kids playing soccer

Clubs can’t logically expect these kinds of players to play a consistent game for so long and on such a large playing field without exhausting themselves before the end of the game.

But despite this permitted flexibility, there are two scenarios where the length of a soccer field does have to fit within specified dimensions:

At a professional level

and for U.S. Youth Soccer games.

What is the Official Size of a Professional Soccer Field?

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has set the rule for the size of the soccer field for 11 vs 11 player professional competitions.

These soccer fields must be between 100 – 130 yards (300 – 390ft) long and between 50 – 100 yards (150 – 300ft) wide. For international matches, the soccer fields range from 110 – 120 yards long and 70 – 80 yards wide.

FIFA, the non-profit international governing body for soccer, enforces these rules.

They can set an official size for professional games because these professional games always have the same number of players who are always adults.

These professional adult matches have two teams with 11 players, all of which have similar skill levels.

As an example, take a look at the image below that lists the width of several MLS soccer fields.

Width of 5 MLS soccer fields

You can see the differences as sometimes small but are still significant.

It’s the same if you look at the length of a variety of fields.

Length of 5 MLS soccer fields

You can see in the image above that the length will vary depending on the specific soccer field being used.

It’s not hard to see why professional national and international matches require at least approximately the same sized fields.

These stadiums won’t know the playing styles of each team that visits, so these measurements will put the visiting teams on a more-or-less even playing field with one another without requiring many changes from the stadium.

It also benefits the stadium crew, who are better able to produce a consistent and enjoyable watching experience for the fans who watch the games from home.

What Size is a Youth Soccer Field?

Youth soccer field dimensions will vary in size depending on the number of players they have and the age of the players involved.

The U.S. Youth Soccer Association provides regulations for the size of the field for games with teams of 6-13 players each.

If each team only has six players, the field will be 15-25 yards wide and 25-35 yards long.

If teams are playing in a 9v9 game, the area is enlarged to 45-55 yards wide and 70-80 yards long.

9v9 soccer field dimensions

For really young players, you may want to modify the size of the playing field according to what drills you’re practicing and for when you introduce a new game.

If you’re trying to practice with the kids at keeping the ball away from opposing players as they race down the area, go for a larger playing field to give everyone plenty of opportunity and space.

Are you practicing short passes? Start with a smaller size.

Of course, you don’t have to repaint the boundaries every time you want to change the size of the field.

Cones work well enough, and so long as you have a larger starting field, you should be able to decrease the field to several potential sizes.

Conclusion

In conclusion, there are some fascinating reasons why the size of a soccer field never seems consistent except for professional and international matches. And even then, there are variations.

Knowing when a player is offside in soccer is vital to understanding how the game works. One aspect of the offside rule addresses where a player can receive the ball at a goal kick. Today, let’s look at the answer to the question – can you be offside from a goal kick?

There is no offside offense if a player receives the ball directly from a goal kick. If the offside rule were enforced at a goal kick, this would restrict the player taking the goal kick from passing the ball to another player on their team within the opposition’s half of the field.

A player cannot be offside at a goal kick to allow a player the freedom to kick the ball into the opposition’s half at this set piece.

In this article, I’ll show you what this means and why it matters by explaining:

The reason being in an offside position at a goal kick would be problematic.

How the offside rule would prevent a player from receiving the ball in the opposition’s half,

and I’ll also describe two other situations where there are no offsides.

The Reason There Is No Offside Offense at a Goal Kick

There are two things you need to know to understand the reason for not enforcing the offside rule at a goal kick:

What it looks like for a player to be in an offside position,

and why this would be so restrictive for a team at a goal kick

In a previous article, I explained the offside rules of soccer in more detail. In this article, I’m just going to share what you need to know concerning a goal kick.

What It Means to Be In an Offside Position

Committing an offside offense in soccer means a player was in an offside position when the ball was last touched or played by another player on their team.

The rules of soccer state that a player is in an offside position when:

Any part of their head, body, or feet is nearer to their opponents’ goal line than both the second-last opponent and the ball,

And any part of their head, body, or feet is in their opponent’s half of the field.

The image below shows an example of a player in an offside position.

Example of a soccer player in an offside position

However, it’s important to note that it’s not an offense to be in an offside position.

A player only commits an offside offense if they become involved in “active play” while in that position when the ball is last played or touched by another player on their team.

So, how does this relate to a goal kick?

How Being in an Offside Position Affects Players at a Goal Kick

Understanding what it means to be in an offside position will help you realize why using the offside rule would be problematic at a goal kick.

When the goalie or defender takes a goal kick, they often use this opportunity to move the ball into the opposition’s half of the soccer field.

Suppose there was offside at a goal kick. In that case, the opposition players could easily restrict attacking players from receiving the ball directly from the goal kick by standing on the halfway line.

Because a player is in an offside position when:

they are nearer to their opponent’s goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent,

and they are in their opponents’ half of the field,

If the defending players all stand on the halfway line for a goal kick, then any player in the attacking half of the field would have:

Part of their head, body, or feet nearer to their opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent,

and part of their head, body, or feet is in their opponents’ half of the field.

Player in offside position at a goal kick

This would mean they are in an offside position. If the player then touched the ball directly from the goal kick while in this position, they would commit an offside offense.

To prevent this, there is no offside offense in soccer if a player receives the ball directly from a goal kick.

Can You Be Offside From a Drop Goal Kick Out of Hands?

One other question I sometimes hear people ask is whether a player can be offside after a drop goal kick out of the goalie’s hands.

This is different from a goal kick awarded by the referee to a team after the ball has gone out over the goal line.

In this scenario, the goalie will have collected the ball during gameplay, held the ball in their hands for a moment before they release it in front of them, and kick the ball up the field.

A player can be offside from a drop goal kick out of the goalie’s hands. If a player becomes involved in active play while in an offside position at the moment the goalie last touches the ball, then that player will have committed an offside offense.

A goalie only drop kicks the ball out of their hands during the usual run of play.

At this point in a soccer game, the offside rule is in force. Therefore, any player that commits an offside offense in these circumstances is subject to the same repercussions as they would be at any other point in the game.

The only exceptions to this are at a goal kick, as we have already covered, and at two other specific set-pieces.

Two Other Scenarios Where a Player Is Not Offside in Soccer

Other than a goal kick, there are only two other times when a player is not offside.

They are when receiving the ball directly from a:

Corner kick

Or throw-in

Offside at a Corner kick

The reason there is no offside offense at a corner kick is different from a goal kick.

There are no offsides at a corner kick because a player can’t be in an offside position at a corner kick. So to eliminate any confusion, the rules of soccer don’t require offsides from a corner.

Soccer player taking a corner kick

Being in an offside position means a player is “nearer to their opponents’ goal line than the ball” when it is last played or touched by another player on their team.

At a corner kick, the ball is already on, or very near, the goal line when a player kicks it.

This makes it hard for a player on the same team to be closer to the goal line than the ball is to the goal line.

There is no offside offense at a corner kick to decrease the chance of the officials having to make some very tough calls.

For more info on this topic, check out my article – Offsides at a Corner Kick.

Offside at a Throw-in

The last area where there is no offside offense in soccer is at a throw-in.

Soccer player about to take a throw-in

A player cannot be offside if they receive the ball directly from the throw-in because this would mean that the player taking the throw would not be able to throw the ball further up the field within the opposition’s half from where they were standing.

Again, because of the meaning of being in an offside position, the opposition could prevent a player from throwing the ball forward by standing level with the player taking the throw.

If they did stand level with the thrower, and the player taking the throw-in still threw the ball forward to another player on their team, then the player receiving the ball would be:

nearer to their opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent,

and in their opponents’ half of the field.

The definition offside means they would be in an offside position and committing an offside offense when they become involved in active play.

To prevent this from happening, there is no offside offense if a player receives the ball directly from a throw-in.

For more information on offsides at a throw-in, check out my article – Offside From a Throw-In: The Rules Are Clear.

The offside rule is one of the most complex rules in soccer. To help you understand the details, I want to look at one aspect of the offside rule – offsides at a throw-in. Here, I’ll clearly explain to you if a player can be offside at a throw-in.

There is no offside offense if a player receives the ball directly from a throw-in taken by a player on their own team. If there were an offside offense at a throw-in, the player taking the throw would be restricted in the direction they could throw the ball in the opposition’s half of the field.

To prevent this from happening, the offside rule does not apply in this situation.

To help you understand what this means and why it matters, in this article, I’ll explain:

Why being in an offside position at a throw-in is problematic.

How being offside would restrict a player throwing the ball up the field,

and then I’ll show you two other situations in soccer where there are no offsides.

Why You Can’t Be Offside From a Throw-in

To understand why a player can’t be offside at a throw-in, you need to understand:

What it means for a player to be in an offside position,

and how that affects a player at a throw-in

Previously, I’ve explained the offside rules of soccer in more detail, but here I’m just going to give you the details you need to know as they relate to a throw-in.

What It Means to Be In an Offside Position

First, let’s look at what it looks like to be offside.

Being offside in soccer requires you to be in an offside position at the moment the ball was last played or touched by another player on your team.

Soccer rules say that a player is in an offside position if:

Any part of their head, body, or feet is nearer to their opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent,

And any part of their head, body, or feet is in their opponents’ half of the field.

Example of a soccer player in an offside position

Although it’s not an offense to be in an offside position on the field, if a player is in that position when the ball is last played or touched by another player on their team, and they become involved in “active play”, then they will be committing an offside offense.

(Check out my article – Offsides in Soccer: A Clear Explanation – for more details)

The key fact to notice here is how easy it would be for a player to be in this position when another player takes the throw.

How Being in an Offside Position Affects a Player at a Throw-in

If the offside rule applied to throw-ins, a player taking a throw in the oppositions half of the field could not throw the ball forward to another player on their team.

They could only throw the ball to a player level with them, or behind them.

Soccer player about to take a throw-in

Let me explain this some more.

Because of what it means to be in an offside position, all the opposition would have to do to prevent a player from throwing the ball forward would be to all stand level with the player taking the throw-in.

If the opposition did this and the player taking the throw-in threw the ball to another player on their team who was standing closer to their opponent’s goal line than the player with the ball, then that player would have:

Part of their head, body, or feet nearer to their opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent,

and part of their head, body, or feet is in their opponents’ half of the field.

This means they would be in an offside position, and they would commit an offside offense if they touched the ball directly from that throw-in.

If there were offsides at a throw in

To prevent a team from being significantly limited at a throw-in, there is no offside offense if a player receives the ball directly from a throw-in.

Instead, the rules allow a player to throw the ball directly to another player on their team that would typically be in an offside position.

There is no offside offense if a player receives the ball directly from a throw-in because, if there were, a player would never be able to throw the ball further up the field if they were taking the throw from within the opposition’s half of the field.

When the Offside Rule Comes Back Into Effect After a Throw-in

As I mentioned initially, there is no offside offense only if a player receives the ball directly from a throw-in.

An example of “receiving the ball directly” would be the first player to touch the ball after a player releases the ball from their hands at a throw-in.

These players cannot be offside because they received the ball directly from the throw.

However, as soon as one player has touched the ball directly from the throw, the offside rule is in force again, and the next player to touch the ball could be offside.

If the players are not alert to this fact, they could easily make a mistake and find themselves penalized for being offside.

Two More Situations Where a Player Is Not Offside

Having looked a whether a player can be offside from a corner kick, I want to quickly explain the two other instances in a soccer game where a player cannot be offside.

They are:

At a goal kick

And at a corner kick

At a Goal Kick

There is no offside at a goal kick because this would prevent the player taking the goal kick from being able to pass the ball to any player on their team outside of their half of the field.

Soccer player taking a goal kick

If you think about it, because a player is in an offside position if:

Any part of their head, body, or feet is nearer to their opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent,

and any part of their head, body, or feet is in their opponents’ half of the field,

Then all the opposition players would have to do to prevent a player from the team taking the goal kick from receiving a pass would be to stand on the halfway line.

If all the defending players stand on the halfway line, then any attacking player in the attacking half of the field would have:

Part of their head, body, or feet nearer to their opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent,

and part of their head, body, or feet is in their opponents’ half of the field.

This would put them in an offside position, and they would commit an offside offense if they touched the ball directly from the goal kick.

To prevent this scenario from happening, there is no offside offense if a player receives the ball directly from a goal kick.

Check out my article – Offsides at a Goal Kick – to understand more about this scenario.

At a Corner Kick

After a throw-in and a goal kick, the third area where there is no offside offense in soccer is a corner kick.

The reason for no offside offense at a corner kick is a little different from both a throw-in and a goal kick.

There are no offsides at a corner kick because it is unlikely that a player will be in an offside position at a corner kick. Therefore, to eliminate any confusion, the rules of soccer removed offsides from this set-piece.

Soccer player taking a corner kick

As I’ve mentioned more than once in this article, being in an offside position requires a player to be nearer to their opponents’ goal line than the ball at the moment it is last played or touched by another player on their team.

The nature of a corner kick is that the ball is already on or very near the goal line when a player kicks it.

This makes it very hard for a player on the same team to be closer to the goal line than the ball.

There is no offside offense at a corner kick to minimize any confusion or tough calls by the referee.

There is no doubt that the offside rule in soccer is one of the most complicated in the game. So today, we’re going to look at one aspect of this rule – offsides at a corner kick – and I’m going to clearly explain whether a player can be offside at a corner kick.

There is no offside offense if a player receives the ball directly from a corner kick because a player cannot be in an offside position at the moment a player takes the kick. Therefore, to prevent confusion in this situation, the offside rule does not apply at a corner kick.

Being penalized for an offside offense requires a player to be in an offside position, which is not possible at a corner kick.

In this article, I’ll explain:

What it means to be in an offside position

How this applies to a corner kick

Why the players need to be careful not to find themselves offside immediately after the corner kick

and two other situations where there are no offsides

Why You Can’t Be Offside at a Corner Kick

To understand why a player can’t be offside at a corner kick, you need to understand:

What it means for a player to be in an offside position,

and why that is not possible at a corner kick

Previously, I’ve explained the offside rules of soccer in more detail, but here I’m just going to give you the details you need to know as they relate to a corner kick.

What It Means to Be In an Offside Position

Being offside in soccer requires you to be in an offside position when the ball was last played or touched by another player on your team.

A player is in an offside position if:

Any part of their head, body, or feet is nearer to their opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent,

And any part of their head, body, or feet is in their opponents’ half of the field.

Example of a soccer player in an offside position

The key fact to notice here is that players are only in an offside position if they are nearer to their opponents’ goal line than the ball.

This statement is important because of the position of the ball at a corner kick.

Position of the Ball at a Corner Kick

At a corner kick, a player must kick the ball from one of the corner areas, or arcs, on a soccer field.

Each of these corner areas is next to one of the goal lines on the field.

This means that at a corner kick, a player is essentially kicking the ball from their opponent’s goal line.

And because a player is only in an offside position if they are nearer to their opponents’ goal line than the ball, there is no possibility that a player can be in an offside position at a corner kick. This is because they cannot be nearer to their opponents’ goal line than the ball.

Soccer player taking a corner kick

(*Note: Although the shape of the corner area does allow a player to kick the ball from a position slightly in-field from the goal line, the distance from the goal line is small enough to be negligible. Because it would be challenging for the officials to tell if a player is nearer to their opponents’ goal line than the ball or not, the rules simply state that there is no offside offense at a corner kick.)

When Can a Player Be Offside After a Corner Kick?

As I mentioned initially, there is no offside offense if a player receives the ball directly from a corner kick.

An example of this would be the first player to head the ball after a player crosses the ball into the penalty area from a corner kick. Or the player that receives a pass from the corner kick.

These players cannot be offside because they received the ball directly from the corner kick.

(*Note: Touching the ball directly from a corner kick refers to the first player to touch the ball after the player taking the corner kick has kicked the ball. This player cannot be offside.)

However, as soon as one player has touched the ball directly from the corner kick, the offside rule is in force again, and the next player to touch the ball could be offside.

If the players are not alert to this fact, they could easily make a mistake and find themselves penalized for being offside.

A Player Cannot Be Offside From a Throw-in

Soccer player about to take a throw-in

The reason for no offside offense at a throw-in is similar to why there is no offside offense at a goal kick.

There is no offside offense if a player receives the ball directly from a throw-in because, if there were, a player would never be able to throw the ball further up the field if they were taking the throw from within the opposition’s half of the field.

Because of what it means to be in an offside position, all the opposition would have to do to prevent a player from throwing the ball forward would be to all stand on the halfway line.

If they did this and the player taking the throw-in threw the ball forward to another player on their team, then that player would have:

Part of their head, body, or feet nearer to their opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent,

and part of their head, body, or feet is in their opponents’ half of the field.

This means they would be in an offside position, and they would commit an offside offense if they touched the ball directly from that throw-in.

To prevent this scenario from happening, there is no offside offense if a player receives the ball directly from a throw-in.

Check out my article – Can you be offside at a throw-in? – to discover more.

Offside is just one rule in soccer. And it has developed significantly since it was introduced in 1863.

Every sport, including soccer, has specific rules they follow to start a game. Thankfully, the procedure for starting a soccer game is not hard to understand, and I’ll lay out all the details for you here in this article.

A soccer game starts with one team taking a kick-off from the center of the soccer field. As soon as the referee blows their whistle to start the clock, the designated team can proceed with the kick-off, where one player will pass the ball to another player on their team.

A kick-off is the first kick in a soccer game, but there are several steps a team and the referee must take before the game is ready to begin.

In this article, I’ll explain:

The procedure for the start of a game

Which team starts the game in possession of the ball

The position of the players on the field when the game begins

and how a game restarts after a stoppage

Procedure for the Start of a Soccer Game

When you’re new to the game of soccer, all the rules and requirements may seem confusing, especially if you’re more used to sports such as basketball or baseball.

However, once you take the time to understand soccer, you’ll realize that it is actually reasonably easy to follow.

I know I found this to be true.

One of the essential things to understand in soccer is how a game begins.

How a soccer game starts:

Before a game begins, the referee will toss a coin

The team that wins the coin toss decides which team will take the kick-off

Both teams stand in their correct positions on the soccer field

The referee will blow their whistle to start the clock

A player from one team will take the kick-off from the center mark

The game is now underway

The moment a player kicks the ball at the kick-off is when the game really begins.

But the reality is that there is a process before either team is ready to take the kick-off.

The first step is the coin toss.

Step 1: Coin Toss in Soccer

When the teams first come onto the soccer field after a warm-up, the two captains and the referee will meet in the center of the field.

The referee will produce a coin and ask one of the captains to choose “head” or “tails” before tossing the coin.

According to Law 8 in the rules of soccer, the team that wins the coin toss can decide if they want to take the kick-off or choose which goal to attack in the first half.

The team that loses the coin toss will have to do the opposite of whatever the other team decides.

Referee tossing a coin for the start of a soccer game

The team that starts a soccer game and kicks the ball first is the team that the captains designated would take kick-off at the coin toss before the game.

At this point, you may think that a team captain who wins the toss would always choose to take the kick-off.

But this isn’t always the case.

Sometimes, the weather conditions mean a team wants to play in one specific direction at first, or maybe it’s more important for a team to start the second half in possession of the ball. (More on that in a moment!)

Either way, the captain that wins the coin toss gets to decide.

Step 2: Position of the Players on the Field

Once the teams know who is taking kick-off, the players will stand in the appropriate positions on the field.

Apart from the player taking the kick-off, all players must be in their half of the field at the start of a game. The players on the team not taking the kick-off must be at least 10 yards (9.15 m) from the ball.

A team’s half of the soccer field is the side of the field that contains the goal they are defending.

A center circle is marked on the field to help the referee and players know how far 10 yards (9.15 m) is from the center mark.

Soccer field center circle

Once the ball is kicked and the game is underway, every player is free to move around the field into any position they choose.

Check out my article – Soccer Positions: A Complete Guide – to find out where each player stands on the soccer field.

Step 3: The Referee Will Blow Their Whistle

Once the teams and referee have decided which team is taking the kick-off and the players are in the correct position on the field, then the referee will blow their whistle to start the clock.

The referee is responsible for keeping time during a game and will indicate the beginning of play by blowing their whistle.

The clock works differently in soccer than in many other sports. You can discover why soccer uses a running clock in my article – The Clock in Soccer: Why it Keeps Running and Never Stops – and understand why soccer doesn’t have any timeouts.

Once the referee has blown their whistle, the players are free to take the kick-off.

Step 4: One Team Will Take the Kick-off

In my article – Kick-off in Soccer: Rules, Meaning, and Strategy – I explain all the details involved in taking a kick-off. But I will give you a brief overview here.

The start of a soccer game is called the kick-off. At kick-off, one player will kick the ball from the center mark on the field so that the ball clearly moves.

A player can kick the ball in any direction and to any player they want, but the ball is not in play until the ball has clearly moved.

A player can score a goal directly from kick-off if they wish, as kick-off is a direct kick.

However, you will rarely see a player attempt this as it is extremely hard to see success with this type of attempt on goal!

The ball must be stationary before the player kicks it, and the player taking the kick-off cannot touch the ball again until the ball has touched another player on the field.

If the player taking the kick-off does touch the ball again before another player, the referee will award an indirect kick to the opponents.

Player taking kick off

How a Soccer Game Re-Starts After a Stoppage in Play

Now you understand how a soccer game starts, I want to explain how the game restarts after a stoppage in play.

After a stoppage in play, a soccer game will restart in one of seven ways:

A kick-off

A goal kick

A corner kick

A penalty kick

A throw-in

A free-kick

or a dropped ball

Let’s briefly look at each of these to help you understand what is going on throughout a soccer game. Then, hopefully, you’ll enjoy the game even more!

A Kick-Off

We’ve already looked at how a team takes a kick-off to start a game, but there is one other situation when a team takes a kick-off during a game. This happens after a player scores a goal.

After a soccer player scores a goal, the game restarts with the team that conceded the goal taking a kick-off.

The same rules apply to this kick-off as applied to the kick-off at the beginning of the game. However, there is no coin toss to decide which team takes this kick. It is always taken by the team that conceded the goal.

A Goal Kick

If the ball goes out of play over the goal line and a player on the attacking team is the last person to touch the ball, the referee will award a goal kick.

A goal kick is a kick taken by the defensive team from the goal area in their penalty box.

The goal area is the smaller rectangle box at either end of the soccer field.

Goal area on a soccer field

If the attacking team knocks the ball out over the end goal line on the field, then possession of the ball transfers to the defending team.

They restart the play by taking a goal kick.

Discover much more about goal kicks in my article – Goal Kicks in Soccer: What it means and how they work.

A Corner Kick

If the ball goes out over the goal line of the field and a defender is the last player to touch the ball, then the referee will award a corner kick to the attacking team.

Once the game has stopped due to the ball being out of play, a player will take a corner kick from the corner of the field nearest to where the ball went out.

For more information on corner kicks, check out my post – Corner Kicks in Soccer: A Complete Guide.

A Penalty Kick

If the referee stops play for a foul committed in the penalty area by the defending team on an attacking player, then the referee may award the attacking team a penalty kick to restart the game.

Soccer ball on the penalty mark

Not every foul in the penalty area leads to a penalty kick, even if the offense is committed against the attacking team.

But rather than go into too much detail here, check out my post – Penalty Kick in Soccer – to find out more.

A Throw-in

Play is restarted with a throw-in if the ball goes out along the touchline of the field.

The lines that run along the sides of the field are also known as “touchlines.”

A player must take a throw-in from the location where the ball left the field. They must throw the ball over their head with two hands while both feet are touching the floor.

The referee will award a throw-in to the opponents of the team that last touched the ball before it left the field.

To discover more about throw-ins, check out my post – 11 Soccer Throw-in Rules: All You Need to Know – or – Can You Score From a Throw-In in Soccer?.

A Free Kick

When a player commits a foul on another player anywhere on the field, the referee may restart the game with a free kick.

The team on the receiving end of a foul will take the free kick from the location where the opposition committed the offense.

Soccer player taking a free kick

Like the penalty kick, a player may commit many types of offenses that lead to the referee awarding a free kick.

Rather than going into a lot of detail here, if you want to find out more, check out my article – Free Kicks in Soccer: All your questions answered.

A Dropped Ball

The last option for restarting a soccer game is with a dropped ball.

In this scenario, the referee will drop the soccer ball from about shoulder height in front of one of the players. A player from the team that last touched the ball will receive the dropped ball.

All other players must stand at least 4.5 yards (4 m) back until the ball is back in play.

I hope you now feel you have a much better understanding of how a soccer game starts and how it restarts after a stoppage.
