In the modern era of soccer, Tiki-Taka continues to evolve and adapt. 

Teams recognize the value of possession, quick ball circulation, and positional play. 

The advent of advanced analytics and technology has further refined Tiki-Taka tactics, allowing teams to optimize their passing patterns and decision-making. 

Additionally, Tiki-Taka principles have infiltrated youth development programs, emphasizing technical skills and soccer intelligence from a young age. 

As the game continues to change, Tiki-Taka remains a symbol of soccer’s pursuit of excellence, encouraging players and teams to combine artistry with strategy in their quest for success.

There are a variety of soccer leagues and competitions throughout the US. One example of this is the ECNL. If the ECNL is new to you, you’ll be wanting to understand what it is and how it works. So let me explain it to you here.

The Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) is a national soccer league created in 2009 for youth players aged 13 through 18. ECNL soccer exists to provide the best conditions for developing young players within a highly competitive environment.

In this article, I’ll show you:

• If ECNL soccer is worth it

The Format of ECNL Soccer

As with any soccer season, the ECNL has a specific format that all teams involved must follow. 

Firstly, the ECNL is separated into different sections, depending on the location within the country. 

Girls have nine regional conferences, whereas the boys can enjoy ten. These regional conferences contain anywhere from nine to sixteen clubs, all competing and fighting to be the best. 

Each ECNL season consists of twenty to thirty games spread across the season, and each team plays against all other teams in their specific region.

As well as the regular season, the ECNL also hosts a few other games and events throughout the year. 

These national events occur on weekends against teams from different conferences and regions that they may not ever play during the domestic season. 

The competing teams may not play every other team in the whole tournament, but it is an opportunity to play teams from across the country.

The ECNL also offers their own “Champions League Playoffs” during the season. 

As well as a few wildcard teams, teams that have acquired the most points during the season automatically qualify for the playoffs. These teams create a group of 32. 

The playoffs follow a single round-robin style format, with eight groups, each consisting of four teams. The winner of each group will then play another group winner to decide who qualifies for the ECNL National Finals.

The four teams in the National Finals play in a two-day tournament to decide who becomes the champion that season.

The title of ECNL National champion is arguably the biggest prize in American youth soccer. 

The teams who fail to qualify for the ECNL Champions league can compete in the North American or the Showcase Cup. This cup provides more opportunities to young players that may not be open to them ordinarily. 

Those top sixteen teams who don’t gain enough points to enter the Champions League qualify for the North American Cup.

The sixteen teams below them are eligible for the third-tier Showcase Cup. 

Any teams that don’t qualify for any other Cup have the opportunity to compete in the Open Cup. This is the only way regional teams that don’t qualify for any other competition can prove their worth in front of scouts or coaches from other clubs. 

All this shows that there are many opportunities for youth players to be involved in competitive soccer within the ECNL.

The History of the ECNL

As with any competition, it is worth understanding the history and creation of the ECNL to understand its purpose.

Many of the top female youth clubs around the US came together to create the ECNL in 2009. The main philosophy was that young female soccer players needed a better structure for the girls to develop in the best way possible. 

The structure needed to reduce the number of games within a season and replace them with fewer but more meaningful and quality games. The games needed to help the players grow in the way they needed.

These clubs could also see the path ahead in how the league would work.

Their vision was to have a national competition and a program that would function as a national identification system. They would then link this system to their new competition and become an organization able to share the best practice for developing players nationwide. 

Starting in August 2009, the ECNL began as a girls-only league, catering to under 15, 16, and 17 teams. These teams would play nine regular games during the season to qualify for the ECNL championship. This championship was played later in the year. 

The league expanded a season later, allowing more clubs to take part. This expansion brought the total from 40 clubs up to 52. The development also allowed for the inclusion of a new age bracket in the mix; now, under 18’s were also allowed to play. 

The ECNL saw a further expansion in August 2011 when the number of clubs allowed to play swelled from 52 clubs to 66 clubs. Each team played 30 regular games during the season. This further expansion of clubs and games cemented the league as the leading competitive platform for girls of different ages. 

The league would take on another growth spurt in August 2017, when the founding clubs launched the boys league. These changes allowed both boys and girls to be involved in the ECNL. 

In 2020, the ECNL would see its most significant growth spurt to date.

The leagues had once again increased with clubs, taking the girls league from 94 clubs to 113 clubs and the boys league from 90 clubs to 131 different clubs.

The league’s next expansion happened in 2021, with the formation of a new ECNL Super Cup.

This Super Cup would help clubs find and pick their top players across the age groups and create a “First team.” This team would have additional training sessions throughout the year and play in other competitions within the league.

The new format will allow younger players to:

• challenge themselves, 
• push themselves to greater heights, 
• face challenges, 
• and be up against opponents they would not have encountered before. 

The new development would further aid in developing young players, constantly giving them challenges that they must overcome.

Throughout its history, the ECNL’s focus has been on optimizing the development of youth soccer players across the country.

How to Join ENCL?

If reading about the ECNL has inspired you to join, you’ll be happy to know that joining the ECNL is relatively simple as long as you’re good enough.

To join ECNL, all you need to do is find local clubs in your area that play in the ECNL and inquire about joining one of those clubs. You can find clubs that are contenders in the ECNL in any major city throughout the United States.

A – Away game

A stands for Away game in soccer. An away game is any game a team plays away from their home ground or field. You will most often see the abbreviation A on a soccer league table to indicate any stats relating to the games a team has played away from home.

AET – After Extra Time

AET stands for After Extra Time in soccer. The acronym AET is used on a score sheet to show the score of a game after extra time has been played. Extra time is also referred to as overtime in soccer.

AFC – Association Football Club

AFC stands for Association Football Club in soccer. Association Football is the official name for soccer. AFC is a commonly used acronym in England to designate an organization as a club that plays association football.

AGT – Aggregate score

AGT stands for Aggregate score in soccer. Aggregate score is the combined score between two teams over the course of two games. Aggregate score is most often used in the latter stages of tournament soccer.

Apps – Appearance

Apps stands for appearances in soccer. The acronym apps is used to indicate how many appearances a soccer player has made for their club or international team. You will most often see the abbreviation “apps” in a list of a player’s stats.

D1 – Division One

D1 means Division One in soccer. Division 1 is the highest level of competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division One in soccer consists of the best players and teams from the biggest schools across the United States.

ECNL – Elite Clubs National League

ECNL stands for Elite Clubs National League in soccer. The Elite Clubs National League is a youth soccer league for both girls and boys sanctioned by US Club Soccer. The ECNL exists to assist in the development of youth soccer players.

ECRL – Elite Club Regional League

ECRL stands for Elite Club Regional League. Also known as the ECNL Regional League platform, the ECRL is a collection of regional soccer leagues managed and operated by the ECNL. The ECRL provides an opportunity for players to develop their soccer skills and abilities in a competitive setting.

EDP – Elite Development Program Soccer

EPD stands for Elite Development Program Soccer. EPD is an organization that operates youth soccer leagues for both boys and girls throughout the United States. The EPD also runs multiple tournaments and aims to develop soccer players and encourage them to attend college.

ET – Extra Time

ET stands for Extra Time in soccer. Extra Time is a 30 minute period of playing time that a referee adds to the end of a soccer game if the scores are tied at the end of regulation time. A game will only involve extra time in the context of tournament soccer.

FA – Football Association

FA stands for Football Association in soccer. The FA is the governing body of English soccer and was the first soccer organization in modern-day soccer. The Football Association created the first set of codified rules for soccer.

FC – Football Club

The initials “FC” in soccer stands for the words “Football Club”. FC usually follows, but occasionally comes before, the official name of a soccer team. For example, New York City FC or FC Barcelona. These letters are part of a team’s brand.

FIFA – Federation Internationale de Football Association

FIFA stands for Federation Internationale de Football Association in soccer. Founded in Paris, France in 1904, FIFA is the governing body of world soccer. In English, FIFA means International Federation of Association Football.

FT – Full Time

FT stands for Full Time in soccer. Full time is a term used to mean the time allocated to a game has finished and the game is now over. At full time the players must stop competing and no further action can take place.

GA – Goals Against

GA stands for Goals Against in soccer. GA or Goals Against means the total number of goals a team has conceded throughout a league season or during tournament competition. You will most often see the acronym used in a soccer league table.

GD – Goal Difference

GD in soccer means “Goal Difference”. GD or Goal Difference is the difference between the goals scored and conceded by a team in a soccer league ranking system. Goal difference is often used as a tiebreaker to decide what team finishes higher in the rankings.

GF – Goals For

In soccer, GF means “Goals For”. GF or Goals For refers to the number of goals a soccer team has scored throughout the duration of a competition. Sometimes you will see the acronym GF replaced with GS. GS stands for Goals Scored.

GP – Games Played

GP stands for Games Played in Soccer. GP refers to the number of games a soccer team has played throughout the duration of a league season or tournament competition. Every team in a league must play a specific amount of games before the season is over.

GS – Goals Scored

GS stands for Goals Scored in soccer. GS or Goals Scored refers to the number of goals a soccer team has scored throughout the duration of a competition. Sometimes you will see the acronym GS replaced with GF. GF stands for Goals For.

H – Home

H stands for Home in soccer. When the letter H is used in soccer, it refers to a game played at a soccer team’s home field or stadium. You will most commonly see the letter H used in soccer rankings to indicate the number of games a team has played at home rather than away.

HT – Half Time

HT stands for Half Time in soccer. HT or Half Time refers to the 15-minute break between the two halves of a soccer game. You will most often see the acronym HT displayed beside the current score of a soccer game at the half-time interval.

ID – Identification

ID stands for Identification in soccer and is used in the context of a soccer ID camp. Soccer ID camps are used by colleges to identify the best young soccer players and recruit them to their college soccer teams.

INT – International Game

INT stands for an International game in soccer. An international game is any game that is played by the national team of one country against the national of another country. International soccer games are played multiple times throughout a soccer season.

JV – Junior Varsity

JV means Junior Varsity in soccer. Junior varsity soccer teams consist of the players in a college or school that play for a lower quality soccer team than the team the best players in the school play for.

Meg – Nutmeg

The abbreviation Meg means Nutmeg in soccer. The word meg is used as a shortened version of the word nutmeg. A nutmeg in soccer happens when one player plays the ball through the legs of an opposition player. A meg is also known as a panna or nuts.

MLS – Major League Soccer

In soccer, MLS stands for Major League Soccer. The MLS is the highest level of men’s professional soccer in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1996, Major League Soccer consists of twenty-seven teams located across North America.

MP – Matches Played

MP stands for Matches Played in soccer. The number of matches played by a single soccer team is often displayed on a soccer league table beside the letters MP. A match in soccer is another name for a game.

Nil – Zero

Nil means zero in soccer. The word nil is used in soccer in place of the word zero. If a soccer team hasn’t scored any goals in a game, then their number of goals scored is said to be Nil. Nil is a shortened version of the Latin word for nothing.

NPL – National Premier Leagues

NPL stands for National Premier Leagues in soccer. The NPL is a weekly youth soccer competition that takes place across the United States. The aim of the NPL is to promote youth soccer and provide opportunities for both boys and girls to develop their soccer skills and abilities.

NWSL – National Women’s Soccer League

NWSL stands for National Women’s Soccer League in soccer. The NWSL is the top women’s professional soccer league in the United States. The NWSL was established in 2012 and consists of 10 teams that compete each year from April through November.

ODP – Olympic Development Program

ODP means Olympic Development Program in soccer. ODP soccer is a development program run by US Soccer to discover and develop the best youth soccer players in the country. Players are selected for the ODP through a process of open tryouts.

OG – Own Goal

In soccer, OG means Own Goal. An own goal is a goal a player scores into their own team’s goal net. Any player can score an own goal either accidentally or on purpose. An own goal counts for as many points as a normal goal.

PK – Penalty Kick

PK means Penalty Kick in soccer. A penalty kick is a shot at goal taken from the penalty mark within a penalty area on a soccer field. A referee will award a PK to a team when a player commits an offense against an attacking player within the penalty area.

PLD – Games Played

PLD stands for Games Played in soccer. The abbreviation PLD is most commonly used in a list of soccer rankings to show the total number of games played by one team throughout the course of a competition. The number of games played is an indication of how far through a competition a team is.

PTS – Points

PTS stands for Points in soccer. The abbreviation PTS is used in soccer to show the total number of points a team has earned throughout a league competition. The number of points a team has determines its position in the rankings.

SC – Soccer Club

In soccer, SC stands for Soccer Club. The acronym SC is most often seen as part of a soccer team’s name and indicates the purpose of the organization. SC is an alternative to FC and is most commonly used in North America, where the sport is known as soccer rather than football.

UCL – UEFA Champions League

In soccer, UCL stands for UEFA Champions League. The UEFA Champions League is a competitive tournament that takes place in Europe each year. The UCL is contested between the best teams in Europe with the winner crowned the best club team in Europe.

UEFA – Union of European Football Associations

In soccer, UEFA stands for Union of European Football Associations. UEFA is the governing body for soccer across Europe and oversees soccer, futsal, and beach soccer. UEFA was founded in 1954 and consists of 55 national organizations.

VAR – Video Assistant Referees

VAR stands for Video Assistant Referees in soccer. Video assistant referees monitor a video feed of a soccer game and review decisions made by the referee on the field. The VAR communicates with the referee about any incident the referee may have missed or should reconsider.

As an American, the concept of relegation in soccer can be hard to understand. Most American sports, including Major League Soccer, don’t involve teams being relegated. Thankfully, once it’s explained, I think you’ll agree that the meaning of relegation isn’t too hard to understand.

In soccer, relegation means a team has dropped from their current league to an inferior league. A team is relegated when they finish the season at the bottom of the league. The relegated team starts the following season in a lower league.

Relegation is a huge deal for a team and can affect a team’s long-term future in many ways. In this article, I’ll show you:

What is Relegation?

Relegation in soccer is a system of transfering the lowest-ranked teams in a division at the end of a season down to a lower division for the next soccer season.

One significant difference between European and North American sport is the concept of promotion and relegation in league competition.

Most elite leagues in North American sports are static or closed, meaning the same teams play each other every season. This only changes if the league invites another team in or if one team leaves.

For examples of this, just consider the MLS, NFL, MLB, or the NBA. Each of these sports operates as a closed league consisting of elite teams.

In Europe, sports leagues operate with a different system. Every team has to earn their place in the top league.

It doesn’t matter who is in the team or who owns the team; every new team starts at the bottom of the rankings, in the lowest league. The team then works their way up to the top league by finishing at the top of their current league each season.

When a team ends the season at the top of the league they are in, they are promoted and start the next season in the league above.

Based on this system, it can take years for a new team to arrive at the top. They have to consistently finish at the top of their league season after season until they are promoted to the top league.

But once a team arrives at the top league, there is no guarantee that they will stay there. This is where the process of relegation comes into play.

Relegation is the process of transferring the lowest-ranked sports teams from one league to a lower league or division at the end of a season.

To get relegated means a team will play the next season in a lower league or division than the one they are currently involved in.

Relegation is a real possibility for every team in a league.

It drives a team to do all they can to avoid being relegated. The possibility of relegation can inspire a team to compete to the best of their ability right up until the very last game of the season, but we’ll look at this in more detail in a moment.

First, let’s focus on how relegation works.

How Relegation Works

Relegation in soccer works by taking the lowest-ranked teams in a league at the end of a season and transferring them down to a lower-ranked league. These teams will then compete in a lower league for the following season.

Throughout a season, every soccer team competes to be the best team in the league. Every player wants to finish at the top.

But for many teams, the best they can do is avoid finishing at the bottom of the pile.

In a closed league such as the MLS, finishing the season at the bottom of the league has relatively few consequences. The team that finishes at the bottom returns year after year to continue competing in the same league.

But in a league, such as the English Premier League, where the lowest-ranked teams will be relegated, ending the season in last place has significant consequences.

As an example of how relegation works, let’s look at the English Premier League – the top soccer league in England and often regarded as one of the best soccer leagues in the world.

English Premier League – An Example of Relegation

In the Premier League, 20 teams compete every season to be the best soccer team in the country. But over the course of a season, there will always be some teams that are just not good enough to keep up with the competition.

They will lose more games than the other teams, concede more goals and ultimately end up at the bottom of the league rankings after the last game of the season is played.

Premier League relegation works by taking the bottom three teams in the league at the end of a season and transferring them down to the English Football League Championship, the second-highest league in England. The three relegated teams will compete in the Championship for the duration of the following season.

In many ways, relegation in soccer is a way of saying to a team that they are no longer good enough to compete in the league they are currently in. Next season they must compete in a lower league with teams more similar to their abilities.

What Is the Relegation Zone?

The English Premier League is an example of a league that relegates the bottom three teams at the end of a season. Although most soccer leagues worldwide utilize a relegation system, the number of teams relegated at the end of a season can vary.

For an example of this, look at the table below showing seven of the highest-ranked soccer leagues in the world. Notice how many teams are relegated each season.

Throughout a season, if teams are in a league position where they would be facing relegation if the season were to end, the fans refer to their team being in the relegation zone.

The relegation zone in a soccer league is the bottom section of the league table that consists of the teams who will be relegated if they finish the season in that position.

For example, the relegation zone in the Premier League consists of the three lowest-ranked teams.

The teams that end up in the relegation zone at the end of the season will be relegated.

Pros and Cons of Relegation

The majority of leagues outside of North America use a promotion and relegation system based on teams reaching the top leagues based on merit. Teams work hard to earn and maintain their place at the top.

It’s very doubtful that a closed system model would ever catch on in Europe. And to prove this point, a selection of teams recently attempted to start a closed league based on the North American model. They called it the European Super League.

But within hours of the announcement, the players, coaches, and fans were in uproar. The sense of shock and animosity to the idea was palpable across Europe. With 48 hours, it was clear it was going to collapse, and teams were already pulling out.

But as with anything in life, there are advantages and disadvantages to any system.

Pro’s of Using Relegation in Soccer

One of the most significant benefits of using promotion and relegation is that teams keep competing until the last day of the season. 

Too often in North American sports, we see teams tanking at the end of the season when they know they have nothing else to play for.

When a team has to fight hard to avoid being relegated, you get to witness some fantastic and competitive games from beginning to end of a season.

Avoiding relegation gives a team a strong incentive to improve. 

It can be too easy for a team to settle for just being OK in a closed league system. The team knows they won’t lose their position in the league no matter how well or poorly they perform.

For a team battling to avoid relegation, there is a strong incentive every year to invest in the team and improve their performance as much as possible.

A system of promotion and relegation allows new teams to enter the league each year.

Having new teams entering a league adds freshness and new excitement to a competition. It can be easy for a league to become stale with no new teams.

And who doesn’t love the excitement of a small team working their way up the leagues and finding themselves promoted to the top league with an opportunity to compete against the best teams in the country?!

Cons of Using Relegation

Having listed the advantages of using a relegation system, it’s important to acknowledge that there are also disadvantages.

Most significant is that relegation causes substantial financial problems for a team. 

If a team has been competing in the elite league for several years, they will have a financial structure that reflects the income received at that level. It is common for a relegated team’s revenue to drop dramatically from one year to the next as they compete in a lower quality league.

Some leagues such as the Premier League do aim to minimize the impact of relegation on a team by offering “parachute payments” to help financially support a relegated team.

Another reason relegation can harm a league is that a team can be relegated for just having one bad year.

All teams struggle at times. Whether it’s because of poor coaching, injuries to players, or outside influences, some seasons are just worse than others.

A system of relegation puts these teams at risk of losing their position in the league because of one bad year. As I mentioned in the previous point, relegation can be disastrous for a team, and they may never bounce back.

A game of soccer consists of multiple different events. One common event that you will see in every game is a free-kick. Knowing precisely what is involved in the process of taking a free kick can seem confusing, so in this article, I’m going to give you all the information you need.

A free-kick in soccer is an unopposed kick taken by a player to restart play after an opposition player has committed a foul. A player must take a free-kick from the exact location where the offense occurred, and the play does not restart until the ball clearly moves.

What Is a Free-Kick?

A free-kick can be one of the most exciting parts of a soccer game. You only have to watch this video below of the top 10 goals scored from free-kicks to see what I mean.

But they can also be a reasonably mundane moment in a game when a player quickly takes a short free-kick to get the game going again after a break in play.

Understanding what a free-kick is is the first step in appreciating the value of one.

A free-kick is an opportunity for a team to restart the game in possession of the ball after an offense is committed against them.

If you imagine, for a second, a player in possession of the ball. Imagine them moving up the field, looking for another player on their team to pass to. As they look to move forward with the ball, an opposition player charges into them and illegally takes possession of the ball away from them.

I’m sure you would agree that committing an offense to take control of the ball for your team shouldn’t be allowed. The team on the receiving end of the offense deserves justice.

To reset the play and return possession of the ball to the original team, the referee will stop the game and award a free-kick to the team that lost possession of the ball.

However, the example that I used of charging a player off the ball isn’t the only way a soccer team can get a free-kick. There are several ways this happens.

A soccer team gets a free-kick when the opposition commits a foul against them. Any time a player performs an action that isn’t permitted within the rules of soccer, the referee will award a free-kick to the team on the receiving end of the offense.

There are multiple actions a player can take that are banned from being used on the soccer field. A few examples of this would be any of the following actions performed in a manner that the referee considers careless, reckless, or using excessive force:

• jumping at another player
• kicking or attempting to kick another player
• pushing another player
• striking or trying to strike another player (including a head-butt)
• tackles or challenges another player
• tripping or attempting to trip another player

The moment when a player commits an offense is the moment the referee awards a free-kick.

A referee will award a free-kick to a team when one of the opposition players commits an offense. A free-kick gives possession of the ball to the team on the receiving end of the offense.

How a Free-kick Works

Having understood what a free-kick is and how a team gets one, let’s look at how a free-kick works.

For a free-kick, the ball must be stationary on the ground at the place where the offense occurred. All opponents must remain at least 9.15 m (10 yds) from the ball until a player kicks the ball and it clearly moves. The player taking the free-kick cannot touch the ball again until another player touches it.

There are five elements to understand how a free-kick works.

1. The ball must be stationary before a player kicks it
2. The ball must clearly move once kicked
3. The free-kick is taken from the location of the offense
4. Opponents must be a minimum of 9.15 m (10 yds) away from the ball when a free kick is taken
5. The player taking the kick cannot touch the ball again until another player touches it.

Each one of these steps must be followed.

If they are not, then the referee will often ask the player to retake the kick or may award a free-kick to the opposition as the team taking the free-kick has now committed an offense themselves by not following the rules for a free-kick.

It’s also worth knowing that there is no restriction on what player takes a free-kick for their team.

Any player on a team can take a free-kick. There is no requirement for one specific player to take the free-kick. A team will often decide before a game what player they want to take a free-kick should the opportunity arise.

Because a free-kick can be a valuable opportunity for a team to create a goal, they will usually make sure one of their best players takes the kick.

Some players spend hours every week on the training ground practicing for these moments, and they don’t easily let them pass them by.

Indirect vs. Direct Free kick

So far, we’ve looked at the rules and facts that apply to every free-kick on a soccer field, but what we haven’t yet looked at is the difference between a direct and an indirect free-kick.

A free-kick can be either direct or indirect. The main difference between a direct and indirect free kick is that a player can score a goal from a direct free-kick, but a player cannot score from an indirect free-kick.

Let’s have a look at each of these types of free-kick individually.

Direct Free-Kick

A direct free-kick is the most common type of free-kick you will see in soccer. Most offenses that are committed end up with the referee awarding a direct free-kick rather than an indirect one.

The definition of a direct free-kick is actually very straightforward.

A direct free-kick is a kick where the player taking the kick can score a goal directly from the kick. The ball doesn’t have to touch another player before entering the goal.

Basically, a player can score a goal directly from a direct free-kick. From the moment the player strikes the ball, there is no requirement for the ball to touch anyone or anything else before going into the goal.

A direct free-kick is more common than an indirect one because the most common offenses in soccer lead to a direct free-kick.

There is a long list of offenses in the rules of soccer that lead to a direct free-kick, but to give a brief overview:

A referee will award a direct free kick when:

• a player commits an offense in a careless or reckless manner
• a player commits an offense using excessive force
• a player commits a handball offense
• or a player holds or impedes an opponent with contact

Indirect Free-Kick

Despite what you may have heard, indirect free kicks do still exist! Some people believe indirect free-kicks are no longer a part of the game because you don’t see players taking one as often as you see direct free-kicks.

An indirect free-kick is a kick in soccer where the player taking the kick cannot score a goal directly from that kick. After the player takes an indirect free-kick, the ball must touch another player before any player can score a goal.

To summarize: A player can’t score a goal from an indirect free-kick.

You will often see players get around this rule by having the player taking the kick roll the ball a short distance to another player on their team, who will then take a shot at goal.

Because the ball has made contact with another player before a goal is scored, this is a permissible action.

As with a direct free-kick, there is a long list of offenses in the rules of soccer that lead to an indirect free-kick, but to give you an overview:

A referee will award an indirect free kick when:

• a player plays in a dangerous manner
• a player impedes the progress of an opponent without any contact
• a player commits a verbal offense, including dissent, offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures
• a player prevents a goalkeeper from releasing the ball from their hands
• or a player tries to kick the ball when a goalkeeper is attempting to release it.

An interesting element of the indirect free-kick rules is that certain parts apply just to the goalies.

For example, a referee will award an indirect free-kick if a goalkeeper:

• Controls the ball with their hands or arms for more than 6 seconds
• Touches the ball again after they have released it before the ball touches another player
• Controls the ball with their hand or arm directly from a back pass

If you are watching a game and you are unsure if a referee has awarded a direct or indirect free-kick, my advice is to watch for the signal the referee is making.

The referee will signal an indirect free kick by raising their arm above the head and keeping their arm up until the kick has been taken and the ball has touched another player or gone out of play.

If the referee isn’t doing this, then a player is about to take a direct free-kick.

Penalty Kick Vs. Free-Kick

Another interesting fact about indirect free-kicks is that they are the only type of free-kick that is permitted to be taken within the penalty area.

When you see this happening, it may be confusing as most people believe that a penalty kick is the only set-piece that takes place within the penalty area. But this isn’t the case.

Although both types of kicks take place in a similar area, there are significant differences.

The difference between a penalty kick and a free-kick is that a penalty is awarded for a direct free-kick offense within the penalty area. In contrast, a free-kick is awarded for an offense outside the penalty area or an indirect free-kick offense within the penalty area.

Free-kick Inside the Penalty Area

The times when you see a free-kick taken within the penalty area, it will always be an indirect free-kick.

The referee will award a free-kick within the penalty area when an indirect free-kick offense occurs within the penalty area. A player must take this kick from the location the offense took place, and the same rules apply to this kick as they do to any indirect free-kick.

A free-kick within the penalty area for a team can be both an opportunity and a challenge. It’s an opportunity to use the ball unopposed within a few yards of your opponent’s goal. However, it is also a challenge as the break-in play before you take the kick allows the opposition to bring all their players back behind the ball before you have a chance to do anything with it.

Although you don’t often see free-kicks in the penalty area, the rules of soccer do permit it. It is also an essential factor in understanding free-kicks in soccer.

Stoppage time is a significant part of almost every soccer game. But knowing what it means and how it works can seem confusing. Having spent many years playing soccer, I’m going to give you the complete explanation of stoppage time in this article.

Stoppage time is a period of time that a referee adds to the end of each half of a soccer game to account for time lost during that half. The length of time the referee chooses to add on can vary, depending on the number of stoppages that took place. 

It may seem surprising that the length of time a soccer game lasts can change from game to game, but in this article, I’ll explain:

• Why stoppage time is important
• How it’s calculated (and give some examples)
• How stoppage time is different from extra time
• and why it was introduced.

Let’s get into it!

What Is Stoppage Time?

The first thing to fully understand is what stoppage time means.

Stoppage time means the referee has added extra time onto the end of a half of soccer because the referee had to pause the game multiple times during that period of play. Stoppage time makes up for the time lost.

Imagine for a second any part of a soccer game that you may have seen or played in.

I’m sure you will have quickly noticed several times where the game was briefly paused due to an incident or stoppage in play.

There are several reasons why a referee may stop a game:

• For a substitution to take place
• Assessment of an injury to a player
• A player has scored a goal
• or disciplinary action taking place.

These stoppages are common during a game and can potentially cause significant disruption to the flow of a game.

I know when I’m playing, I enjoy it much more when the game keeps going, and there are as few stoppages as possible.

But the reality is that many of these stoppages can’t be avoided.

• Teams must be allowed to substitute a player
• An injured player can’t be ignored
• After a player scores, the referee must allow time to restart the game

Stoppage time, also known as injury time, was introduced to make sure these breaks in play don’t take away from the overall playing time of the game.

When Was Stoppage Time Introduced?

Before giving you some examples of how stoppage time works, I want to explain when this crucial part of a soccer game was introduced.

Stoppage time was introduced in 1891 after a game between Aston Villa and Stoke where the Aston Villa goalkeeper kicked the ball out of play, ensuring that the game time would elapse before Stoke City could take a penalty kick. Stoppage time was introduced to prevent this from happening again.

Before the rule-makers of soccer introduced stoppage time into the sport, the clock in soccer didn’t stop for any reason.

There were 45 minutes allocated for each half of the game, and when that time was up, the game was up.

Unfortunately, this led to many players deliberately wasting time to run down the clock. Although some dispute it, many believe that it was a game in 1891 that persuaded the English Football Association to change the rules.

On Saturday, November 21, 1891, English teams Aston Villa and Stoke were playing against each other when the referee awarded Stoke a penalty kick in the last few moments of the game. Aston Villa was winning at this point, and a goal for Stoke would have tied the game.

Because there was no allowance for time lost at this time in the history of soccer, the goalkeeper decided he would kick the ball out of play. He was fully aware that by the time someone had retrieved the ball, the game time would be over, and Stoke would be unable to take their penalty kick.

Obviously, the Stoke players and fans felt this was incredibly unfair, and the English Football Association agreed. Soon after this event, the rules were changed, and stoppage time became part of the rules of soccer we know today.

How Does Stoppage Time Work?

So, you can see that stoppage time has been around for a long time, but how does it work?

Stoppage time works by compiling the time lost for stoppages during a single half of soccer and adding that time onto the end of the allocated playing time. The referee won’t end the half until the players have completed stoppage time.

When the referee pauses a game for a substitution, injury, or any other reason, the players must stop playing and wait for the referee to restart the game.

But, unlike many other sports that have a set period of time allocated to play a game, soccer works differently.

Instead of stopping the clock every time, there’s a stoppage in play, the clock in soccer keeps running throughout the break in play.

If you’re used to watching football or basketball, this may seem like a strange concept, but it works really well in soccer.

How Is Stoppage Time Calculated?

Throughout the game, the referee, or one of the referee’s assistants, will keep track of the amount of time the play is stopped and calculate the appropriate length for stoppage time.

Stoppage time is calculated by taking the time lost during a half of soccer from injuries, substitutions, and time-wasting and adding that time to the end of a half. The time added on is known as stoppage time.

So, for example, if play is stopped for 15 seconds to allow a team to make a substitution, the referee will add an extra 15 seconds onto the end of the half.

Or if a player is injured and the game is stopped for 3 minutes to allow the medical team to assess the player, then the referee will add 3 extra minutes onto the end of the half to make up for the time lost.

The rules of soccer refer to stoppage time as “allowance for time lost”, and it’s essential to understand that the referee has complete control over how much stoppage time is allowed.

There is no limit on how much stoppage time a referee can add to the end of a soccer game. The length of stoppage time added on is relative to the amount of game time lost during a half of soccer, and there is no maximum amount.

If the referee decides stoppage time should be one minute, then it will be one minute. If the referee decides it will be eight minutes, then it will be eight minutes.

The length of stoppage time is entirely what the referee believes it should be.

At a professional level, the referee’s assistant, known as the 4th official, will keep track of the time lost. You will see them holding up a board with numbers on at the end of a soccer game indicating how long stoppage time should be.

But during a game where a referee doesn’t have another official keeping track of the time, they will either use their own watch to keep track of the time or allocate specific amounts of time for different stoppages. This may look like this:

• 30 seconds for the restart after a goal has been scored
• 15 seconds for a substitution
• or 15 seconds for a foul.

Ultimately the time allowed for stoppage time is up to the referee. Although there have been studies that suggest that stoppage time isn’t always accurate, the average time stoppage time played is approximately 7 minutes per game.

However long stoppage time is at the end of a half, there have been some dramatic goals scored in game during this period as you can see in this video below.

Stoppage Time vs Extra Time

One more area I want to clarify is the difference between stoppage time and extra time, as many people misunderstand these two.

The difference between stoppage time and extra time is that stoppage time is time the referee adds onto the end of a half as an allowance for time lost, and extra time is an extra period of play added onto the end of a game if the scores are tied, but the game needs a winner.

As with many sports, soccer has its own terminologies and jargon that can be hard to understand if you are new to the game. If you really want to dig into it, then I’ve created a soccer glossary you can look at, but when you hear phrases such as “stoppage time,” “injury time,” or “additional time,” they all refer to stoppage time as we have talked about throughout this article.

Extra time, however, is different from stoppage time.

Extra time is an extra period of 30 minutes added onto a game when the score is tied after the allocated 90 minutes of game time is over.

In some soccer games, it doesn’t matter if a game finishes in a tie. But for some games, there must be a winning team. This is most often the case in tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup or Olympic Soccer, where only one team can progress to the next round.

When the scores are tied at the end of the initial 90 minutes of playing time, then the referee allows an extra 30 minutes of playing time to give the opportunity for more goals to be scored and one team to be victorious.

Soccer is a fantastic game, but it doesn’t take long to realize that there are many terminologies associated with the game that can be confusing to understand. The phrase “clean sheet” may be a saying that you have heard a coach, fan, or commentator use, and now you want to know what it means.

Let me explain the meaning to you.

A clean sheet in soccer is when a team finishes a game without conceding a goal. The phrase “clean sheet” originates from a period when people would track the score of a game on a sheet of paper. If the scorekeeper didn’t have to write anything down during a game, then the paper would stay “clean.”

This slightly old-fashioned phrase maintains its place in common soccer terminology for several reasons that I will explain in this article.

I’ll also show you some examples of games that ended with a clean sheet, leaving you a little more confident in your understanding of soccer than when you first arrived here!

Let’s get started.

What Does a Clean Sheet Mean in Soccer?

When you play soccer, your aim is always to score more goals than your opponents. Scoring the most goals is how a team wins.

To increase a team’s chances of achieving this aim, it helps if they can prevent the opposition from scoring. The fewer goals a team concedes, the fewer goals they have to score to win.

But the ideal situation is to not concede any goals at all.

Conceding zero goals in a game is what is known as keeping a clean sheet.

The phrase “clean sheet” in soccer means a team doesn’t concede any goals in a game. The team finishes the game without conceding a goal.

When the goalkeeper and defenders have successfully kept the ball out of their team’s goal for the duration of a game, the scoreboard will show “0”, meaning the team has kept a clean sheet.

Some of the most enjoyable games I have played over the years have been games where my team has managed to keep a clean sheet.

This is particularly satisfying as a defender or goalie, as you will have spent a large part of your midweek training sessions working hard on tactics that limit your opponents from being able to score. And when that hard work pays off, you finish the game stronger and more confident that you can do the same again next time.

Finishing the game with a clean sheet also guarantees at least 1 point for your team.

The scoring system in soccer works by awarding a team 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 points for a loss. (You can find out more about how points are awarded in my article – A Goal in Soccer: What it is; The Rules; and It’s Worth)

For a team to win, they have to score at least one goal. If your team has a clean sheet at the end of the game, your opponents can’t win.

If your opponents haven’t won, then the only options left are that your team has won or the game has finished as a tie.

Either way, keeping a clean sheet ensures that your team will finish with at least one more point next to their name in whatever competition they are competing.

Is It Important To Keep a Clean Sheet?

The guarantee of more points for your team at the end of the game is the main reason a clean sheet is so important and often sought after by a team.

As a sport, soccer is similar to every other game – the teams are in it to win it.

Not only do teams need to score goals to win, but they need to score more than the team they are playing against.

Defenders and goalies work hard every day to improve their ability to finish a game with a clean sheet.

For one thing, this takes the pressure off the forwards to score more goals but also increases their team’s chances of winning.

If you have watched football at all, you may have heard the phrase “a shutout.” This is essentially the same as a clean sheet in soccer.

Although uncommon in football, a shutout is when one team prevents the other from scoring any points during a game.

In soccer, it’s not uncommon for a game to end with one or both teams “keeping” a clean sheet. The number of goals scored in soccer is usually less than the points scored in a football game.

Because relatively few goals are seen in soccer, preventing the opposition from scoring against you is even more important.

Examples of a Clean Sheet

Having explained what a clean sheet is and why it’s so important, let me give you some examples of a clean sheet.

Two examples of a clean sheet are:

• Germany 1-0 Argentina in the FIFA World Cup Final 2014
• and Liverpool 2 – 0 Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League Final 2019

One of the most famous examples from recent times is the result of the FIFA World Cup Final 2014 held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The game was between Germany and Argentina and finished with a scoreline of Germany 1-0 Argentina.

The World Cup Final is already one of the world’s biggest soccer games, making it even more impressive that Germany ended the game with a clean sheet.

By getting to the final, Argentina had proved they were one of the world’s two best teams. The fact that Germany prevented them from scoring is a testament to their defensive capabilities.

Another example of a team keeping a clean sheet was from the Champions League Final in 2019.

The Champions League Final is the biggest club soccer game in Europe. It takes place every year between the two best teams on the continent.

In 2019 two English teams, Liverpool and Tottenham, faced each other to decide who would be crowned champions.

The game finished Liverpool 2-0 Tottenham.

Liverpool was able to prevent Tottenham from scoring a single goal during the game and finished with not only a trophy but a clean sheet as well.

One thing I often hear some confusion about is if a clean sheet is only when neither team has scored during a game.

This is incorrect.

A soccer game that finishes 0-0 is a clean sheet for both teams. A clean sheet doesn’t mean that no goals were scored during a game, but it means that at least one team has prevented the opposition from scoring a goal during the game.

A game can end with a clean sheet, even if one team has scored.

If the USA beat France 1-0, the US would have kept a clean sheet.

If the USA drew with France 0-0, both teams would have kept a clean sheet.

Why Is It Called a Clean Sheet?

At this point, you may wonder why preventing the opposition from scoring a goal in soccer is known as a “clean sheet.”

This is a reasonable question.

The use of the term “clean sheet” originates from a time when sports reporters would use a sheet of paper to keep track of how many goals a team had scored during a game. If the game ended and the reporter had not written anything down, then the sheet was untainted or clean.

In the past, reporters, fans, and pundits didn’t have access to any of the modern-day technology we have and would keep track of how many goals had been scored in a game by writing them down on a sheet of paper.

This was simple but effective.

At the end of the game, if one or both teams hadn’t scored a goal, then the reporters would see what a team had achieved and report it in the press as a clean sheet.

One word used in soccer that many people struggle to understand is the word “pitch.”

In this article, I want to explain to you what people mean when they use the word “pitch” in soccer.

In soccer, a pitch is another name for the playing surface on which the game of soccer is played. A soccer pitch is also known as a soccer field. Using the word “pitch” to describe the area of ground where a soccer game is played originated in England during the 1800s.

To many people, the word “pitch” can seem like a strange word to use in this context. But once you understand the reasons why this word came to be used, you may find that it actually makes some sense. And maybe you’ll even start using it yourself!

Why Is It Called a Soccer Pitch?

The word “pitch” has been in use for centuries. Even as far back as 1200, it was being used in old English. [source]

And you are probably aware of its use in other areas of life, such as when someone is”pitching a tent” or at night when it’s “pitch-black” outside.

But how and why the word “pitch” came to be used in the context of soccer is surprising to most people. Especially when they discover its use comes from a completely separate sport.

The sport of cricket.

A soccer field is called a pitch because when soccer first became popular in England in the 19th century, teams often played games on a cricket pitch. When soccer began to use designated soccer fields, the term used to describe the playing surface stuck and a soccer field was called a soccer pitch.

Now, you may not know much about cricket, and I’ll be the first to admit that it’s not very easy to understand, but it does have a history of influencing soccer.

But before explaining how the use of the word pitch to describe a playing surface transferred from cricket to soccer, we need to understand what the original meaning of the word “pitch” was.

Meaning of the word “pitch”

The Merriam-Webster dictionary says that the origin of the word pitch is from:

“Middle English – pichen – to thrust, drive, fix firmly.”

You can see this in the modern-day use of the phrase “pitching a tent.” The idea is that you are driving stakes into the ground to ensure that the tent is fixed firmly to the ground.

In a game of cricket, 3 stakes, known as stumps, are thrust or driven into the ground. These are used as a target for the players to throw the ball at. You can see how this looks in the image below.

This act of setting up the stumps before a game was often referred to as “pitching the stumps,” as the word “pitching” can also mean:

“To erect or set up.”

Over the years of using this word, the word “pitch” developed from being used solely as a verb (pitching) to being used as a noun (the pitch). And in cricket, the ground where the stumps were pitched became known as the “cricket pitch.”

Soccer Was Often Played at Cricket Grounds

When soccer first began to become popular in England during the 1800s, there were very few designated soccer fields in existence. But the game of cricket was already popular throughout the country, and most towns had a local cricket pitch.

Because of the lack of access to soccer fields, it was common for many soccer games to be played on the ground where the local cricket games were played. [source] And, as I’ve just mentioned, in popular terminology at the time, the area of ground where the soccer game was being played was often referred to as the “pitch.”

As the sport of soccer grew in popularity, designated fields were set apart for soccer games to be played on, and cricket pitches were left for cricket games to be played on. But the term used to describe the playing surface stuck, and from then on up until the present day, a soccer field was regularly referred to as a soccer pitch.

How Big is a Soccer Pitch?

Now we understand what a soccer pitch is, let’s quickly look at the size of a pitch.

The dimensions of a soccer pitch are defined by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) who are responsible for the laws of soccer.

A soccer pitch is between 100-130 yards (90-120 meters) long by 50-100 yards (45–90 meters) wide. In an international game, the size of the pitch must be between 110-120 yards (100-110 m) long by 70-80 yards (64-75 m) wide.

As you can see, a soccer pitch is fairly big and definitely wider than an NFL pitch. (You can find out more about that here.)

There are also clear markings or lines on a soccer pitch that are always present.

The lines on a soccer pitch define the boundaries of the playing area and identify areas of the pitch where specific rules apply. The lines are always white and are required to be clearly visible at all times.

These lines have different names depending on where they are located.

For example:

• The line at each end of the pitch is known as the goal line
• The lines on the sides of the pitch are known as the touchlines
• and the line across the center of the pitch is known as the half-way line.

Is It a Soccer Field or a Pitch?

Now we know what a pitch is, it raises the question of whether the playing surface where a soccer game is played should be called a soccer field or a soccer pitch.

There is no right answer.

The area of ground where a soccer game is played is known as a soccer field in most of North America, but it is more commonly known as a soccer pitch in England, where the word “pitch” originates from. A soccer pitch is another name for a soccer field.

Whether you choose to call the ground, a field, or a pitch mostly depends on where you are from or where you are based.

In North America, for example, it is uncommon for someone to refer to a sports ground as a “pitch,” and the term “field” is much more prevalent.

an area painted with lines for playing particular sports

Whether you choose to call it a field or a pitch is ultimately up to you. Just be aware that if you are in the United States and decide to use the term “pitch,” you should be prepared to explain to those around you what you are talking about!

Meaning of “On or off the pitch”

This explanation also helps to clarify what people mean when they say a soccer player, or the ball, is “off the pitch” or “on the pitch.”

In soccer, the phrase “off the pitch” means that either a player or the ball is no longer on the soccer field. They have crossed the outside boundaries of the field.

The phrase “on the pitch” means that the player or the ball is on the soccer field. They are within the boundaries of the playing area.

AM – Attacking Midfielder

In soccer, the abbreviation “AM” means Attacking Midfielder. The attacking midfielder (AM) is positioned in the center of the soccer field just behind the attacking players and is the furthest forward player of the midfielders on a team.

AMC – Attacking Midfielder Center

The abbreviation “AMC” in soccer means Attacking Midfielder Center. The Attacking Midfielder Center (AMC) is positioned in the center of the soccer field and is expected to support the forwards in all attacking opportunities during a soccer game.

AMF – Attacking Midfielder

In soccer, the abbreviation “AMF” stands for Attacking Midfielder. The attacking midfielder is one of the most important players on a soccer team, is positioned in the center of the field, and assists the forwards.

AML – Attacking Midfielder Left

The abbreviation “AML” in soccer means Attacking Midfielder Left. The Attacking Midfielder Left (AML) is positioned on the left of the soccer field just behind the forwards on the team. Their role is to support the forwards from the left of the field during any attack in a soccer game.

AMR – Attacking Midfielder Right

CDM – Central Defensive Midfielder

“CDM” in soccer means central defensive midfielder. The central defensive midfielder(CDM) is positioned at the center of the soccer field, just in front of their team’s defenders, and is positioned at the furthest back of the midfielders. The role of the central defensive midfielder (CDM) is to protect the defense and be a link between the defense and midfield.

CF – Center Forward

In soccer, the abbreviation “CF” means Center Forward. The Center Forward(CF) is the player positioned furthest forward on a team and operates closer to the opposition’s goal than any other player on the team. The role of the Center Forward(CF) is to score goals for the team.

CH – Center Half

The abbreviation “CH” means Center Half in soccer. The center half(CH) is an alternative name for a center back(CB) or central defender. They are positioned at the center of the team’s defense, and their role is to prevent the opposition from scoring.

CM – Central Midfield

The abbreviation “CM” means Central Midfield. In soccer, the player who plays central midfield(CM) is positioned at the team’s center between the defense and attack. They have a multi-faceted role, which includes supporting the defense and the forwards. They are often referred to as the engine room of the team.

CMF – Central Midfielder

The abbreviation “CMF” means Central Midfielder. Also known as simply “CM” the central midfielder(CMF) on a team is the main link between all the players on a team. Positioned at the center of the team, the soccer ball will often come through them as it travels between the defense and attacking players on the team.

DM – Defensive Midfielder

In soccer, the abbreviation “DM” means Defensive Midfielder. The defensive midfielder(DM) on a team is positioned at the back of the midfield players and just in front of the defense. The role of the defensive midfielder(DM) is to protect and support the defense and prevent the opposition from scoring a goal.

GK – Goalkeeper

In soccer, the abbreviation “GK” means Goalkeeper. In a soccer team, the goalkeeper(GK) is positioned furthest back, just in front of the team’s goal. The role of the goalkeeper is to protect the team’s goal and stop the opposition from scoring a goal. A goalkeeper(GK) is the only player on a team who can use their hands.

LB – Left Back

In soccer, the abbreviation “LB” means Left Back. The left-back(LB) is part of the team’s defense and is positioned on the left side of the soccer field. The role of the left-back(LB) is to defend the left-hand side of the soccer field and prevent the opposition from scoring a goal.

LCB – Left Center Back

In soccer, the abbreviation “LCB” means Left Center Back. The left-center back(LCB) is positioned on the left side of the defense on a soccer team. The role of the left-center back(LCB) is to defend the left-hand side of the soccer field and prevent any opposition players or the soccer ball from getting past them.

LF – Left Forward

In soccer, the abbreviation “LF” means Left Forward. The left forward(LF) is positioned on the left-hand side of the team’s attacking line. The role of the left forward(LF) is to contribute to the goals scored by their team as well as create goal-scoring opportunities for other players on the team.

LH – Left Half

In soccer, the abbreviation “LH” means Left Half. Historically, the left half(LH) was positioned on the left-hand side of the team, and their role was to cover the left-hand side of the field, supporting both the defense and offense. In modern-day soccer, is position is more commonly known as left midfield(LM)

LM – Left Midfielder

In soccer, the abbreviation “LM” means Left Midfielder. The left midfielder(LM) is positioned on the left-hand side of the soccer field and is responsible for supporting both the defense and forward players whenever the soccer ball is on the left side of the field. The left midfielder(LM) is often one of the fastest players on a team and is skilled at crossing the ball.

LS – Left Striker

In soccer, the abbreviation “LS” means Left Striker. The left striker(LS) is positioned on the left-hand side of the forward players near the opposition’s goal. The role of the left striker(LS) is to score goals for the team when given the opportunity and to create opportunities from the left-hand side of the soccer field.

LW – Left Winger

In soccer, the abbreviation “LW” means Left Winger. The left-winger(LW) is positioned on the left-wing of the team, meaning the left-hand side. The role of the left-winger(LW) is to cover the entire left side of the soccer field supporting both the offense and defense.

LWB – Left Wing Back

In soccer, the abbreviation “LWB” means Left Wing Back. The left wing-back(LWB) is positioned on the left-hand side of a soccer team’s defense. The role of the left wing-back(LWB) is to defend the left-hand side of the soccer field from the opposition as well as support the team’s attacking players by moving up the field when the soccer ball is in the attacking half of the field.

M – Midfielder

In soccer, the abbreviation “M” means Midfielder. The midfielder(M) on a soccer team is positioned in the center of the field between the offense and defense. The role of the midfielder(M) is to be a link between the defensive players and the attacking players.

OB – Outside Backs

In soccer, the abbreviation “OB” means Outside Backs. The outside backs(OB) on a soccer team are positioned on either side of the team’s defense. An outside back(OB) can play on the left or right side of the team. The role of an outside back(ob) is to protect the team’s goal and stop any attacks coming down the sides of the soccer field from either the right or left.

RB – Right Back

In soccer, the abbreviation “RB” means Right Back. The right-back(RB) is part of the team’s defense and is positioned on the right-hand side of the soccer field. The role of the right-back(RB) is to defend the right-hand side of the soccer field and prevent the opposition from scoring a goal.

RCB – Right Center Back

In soccer, the abbreviation “RCB” means Right Center Back. The right center back(RCB) is positioned on the right-hand side of the center of defense. The right center back(RCB) often plays alongside a left center back(LCB) and they cover the center of the defense between them. The role of the right center back(RCB) is to prevent the opposition from scoring a goal.

RF – Right Forward

In soccer, the abbreviation “RF” means Right Forward. The right forward(RF) is positioned furthest forward in a soccer team on the right-hand side of the soccer field. The role of the right forward is to work with the other offensive players on the team to create goal-scoring opportunities and score goals for their team.

RM – Right Midfielder

In soccer, the abbreviation “RM” means Right Midfielder. The right midfielder(RM) is positioned on the right-hand side of the midfield. The role of the right midfielder(RM) is to link the team’s defense and attacking players on the right-hand side of the field and support both the offense and defense.

RS – Right Striker

In soccer, the abbreviation “RS” means Right Striker. The right striker(RS) is positioned on the right-hand side of the forward players near the opposition’s goal. The role of the right striker(RS) is to score goals for the team when given the opportunity and to create opportunities from the right-hand side of the soccer field.

RW – Right Winger

In soccer, the abbreviation “RW” means Right Winger. The right-winger(RW) is positioned on the right-wing of the team, meaning the right-hand side. The role of the right-winger(RW) is to cover the entire right side of the soccer field supporting both the offense and defense.

SS – Second Striker

ST – Striker

SW – Sweeper

In soccer, the abbreviation “SW” means Sweeper. The sweeper is a defensive player on a soccer team who is positioned between the goalkeeper and the defensive line. The role of the sweeper(SW) is to provide a secondary level of defense behind the other defenders on the team and cover the width of the soccer field.

WF – Wing Forward

In soccer, the abbreviation “WF” means Wing Forward. The wing forward(WF), also known as the right-wing forward(RWF) or left-wing forward(LWF), is positioned in the edge, or wing, of the soccer field in a forward position. The role of the wing forward(WF) is to support the other forward players on the team by providing assists.

WB – Wing Back

In soccer, the abbreviation “WB” means Wing Back. The wing-back(WB) is positioned on the edge, or wing, of the soccer field in a defensive position. The role of the wing-back(WB) is to support the defense by providing cover on the edge of the field, making tackles, and stopping any opposition players from getting past.

One of the words you will often hear in soccer is the term “aggregate.” Knowing what the word aggregate means can be confusing, but understanding the meaning and how it works is important to understanding which team will win a game.

In this article, I want to clearly explain what aggregate means and give some clear examples of its use.

In soccer, the word “aggregate” refers to the combined scoreline between two teams after playing against each other two times. This combined scoreline determines which team is the winner of the game.

Combining the scores from two soccer games does not happen in every competition, and knowing the score is “on aggregate” is only relevant at certain times.

The Definition of Aggregate

The word aggregate is not a word that you hear used very often (at least I don’t!), so to clearly understand the word, I figured I’d look up the dictionary definition and find out what it says.

The Oxford Dictionary defines aggregate as:

A whole formed by combining several (typically disparate) elements, or The total number of points scored by a player or team in a series of sporting contests.

In other words:

The definition of aggregate score is the total number of points, or goals, accumulated by one team over the course of a series of games.

As you can see, this definition clearly explains the reason the word aggregate is used as it is in soccer. It is a good definition of what is happening.

But a definition alone doesn’t explain how “aggregate” works in the context of a soccer game.

How Aggregate Works in Soccer

In soccer, aggregate works by taking the scoreline from one soccer game between two teams and adding it to the scoreline of another game between those same two teams. The combined scoreline from those two games is the aggregate scoreline or the score “on aggregate.”

In various soccer tournaments around the world, teams will play each other twice to decide who the winner of the contest is and, therefore, which team should progress to the next round of the competition.

Some examples of tournaments where an aggregate format is used are:

• FIFA World Cup qualifying rounds
• UEFA Champions League
• Copa Libertadores
• The Copa del Rey in Spain
• The Coppa Italia in Italy
• and previously the MLS conference semifinals and finals

Each of these soccer tournaments relies on the use of aggregate goals to decide on which team has won a game.

This also means that when the teams meet to play against each other for a second time, they are effectively beginning the game at the point they finished the previous game.

If one team lost the previous game, then they are starting at a disadvantage and have to score more goals than the opposition if they are to catch up, improve their aggregate scoreline, and win the game.

Alternatively, if one team won the previous game, they start the second game with an advantage and only have to score the same number of goals as the opposition in the second game to be considered the winners of the game.

Examples of Aggregate Being Used

To help make this clear, let’s look at examples of an aggregate scoreline being used.

Example 1

Team A plays Team B, and the first game ends with Team A winning 3 -1

Team A then plays Team B in a second game, which ends with Team B winning 2 -1

In this scenario, Team A would be declared the overall winner as the aggregate scoreline (the scoreline of the two games added together) would be:

Team A 4 – 3 Team B.

Example 2

Team C plays Team D, and the first game ends with a scoreline of 1-1

Team C then plays Team D in a second game, which ends with Team D winning by 1 – 0

In this scenario, Team D would be the winner as the final, or aggregate scoreline, would be:

Team C 1 -2 Team D.

Why Aggregate Is Used in Soccer

Hopefully, what you have read so far is helping to explain and clarify what aggregate is in soccer, but the next question you may have is: is why is aggregate used at all?

Aggregate is used in soccer in an attempt to give as fair a result as possible. Not only do both teams have two opportunities to beat their opposition, but each game is played at a different location. The first game is at one team’s “home” ground, and the second game is at the other team’s “home” ground.

Playing a soccer game at a team’s “home” field, ground, or stadium is often considered to give that team a psychological and physiological advantage over their opposition. [source]

Because of this, it is unreasonable for the final scoreline of the game to be decided after only the first game. To counteract this effect and make sure neither team has an advantage, each team is given the opportunity to play a game on their “home” field.

This is why aggregate scores are used. To make sure that the result of the game is as fair as it possibly can be.

The Away Goals Rule in Soccer

At this point, you may feel you understand how and why this works, but unfortunately, there is one more factor that can make the use of aggregate in soccer a little more complicated. That is the away goals rule.

The away goals rule in soccer is a rule used to determine the winner of a soccer game when the scorelines are tied after two games, or on aggregate. Under the away goals rule the team who has scored the most away goals over the two games is considered to be the winner of the game.

Away goals in soccer are the goals a team scores away from their “home” ground. Whenever a team scores a goal at a soccer stadium or field that is not their home field, they have scored an “away” goal.

In the context of a game decided on aggregate goals, this would mean that there is an advantage to scoring as many goals as possible during an “away” game. This could give a team an advantage and allow them to win the game if the scoreline ends in a tie.

The away goals rule is used and accepted because it is considered harder to score goals away from home than to score a goal at home. This is again due to the fact I mentioned before that playing a soccer game at home has many psychological as well as physiological advantages over the opposition.

The use of the away goals rule to determine the winner of a soccer game where the aggregate score is tied is considered a fair way to decide on the winner of the game.

Examples of the Away Goals Rule in Soccer

Again, it’s helpful to look at examples so let’s look at two examples of the away goals rule being used on an aggregate score.

Example 1

Team A plays at home against Team B, and the first game ends with Team A winning 4 -1

Team A then plays Team B in a second game in which Team B is playing at home. The game ends with Team B winning 3 – 0

In this scenario, although the score on aggregate is 4 -4 Team B would be declared the overall winners as they scored the only away goal of the two games and would win based on the away goals rule.

Example 2

Team C plays at home against Team D and the first game ends Team C winning 2-1.
