The term “sweeper” evokes images of a solitary figure guarding the back line with a blend of finesse and authority.

Yet, understanding the role of a sweeper in soccer goes beyond the stereotypes.

The position demands unique skills and a deep understanding of defensive strategy.

In this article, I will attempt to unravel the mysteries surrounding the sweeper in soccer, delving into the nuances of their role on the field and shedding light on their pivotal contributions to a team’s success.

Introduction to the Sweeper Position:

The sweeper position in soccer is one of the most intriguing and historically significant roles on the field.

Also known as the libero position, this position has been used throughout the history of the game.

Traditionally, the sweeper is often regarded as the “last line of defense,” positioned behind the center-backs and responsible for clearing any threats that breach the defensive line.

This unique position was particularly prominent in older formations like the classic 1-3-3-3 or the 1-4-3-2.

The sweeper was the safety net in these setups, ready to neutralize attacks and initiate counterplays.

Over time, with tactical innovations and shifts in formations, the role of the sweeper has evolved.

Still, its core function remains rooted in defensive solidity.

The Sweeper’s Tactical Responsibilities:

A sweeper’s primary responsibility is safeguarding the defensive line, making it exceptionally challenging for opponents to breach.

This entails sweeping up loose balls, intercepting through passes, and clearing dangerous crosses and shots.

The sweeper must possess impeccable timing and anticipation, often making split-second decisions to snuff out threats.

Beyond defensive duties, the sweeper is vital in initiating attacking plays. With a clear view of the entire field, they can distribute the ball to the midfielders and forwards, kick-starting counterattacks.

This ability to begin an attack from the back of the field is one surprising way that I found to set myself apart as the best sweeper on the team.

This dual role demands a high level of soccer intelligence and the ability to switch between defensive and offensive mindsets seamlessly.

A skilled sweeper can transform a team’s defense into a well-oiled machine, providing security at the back and a launchpad for offensive opportunities.

Skills and Qualities of an Effective Sweeper:

A player must possess unique skills and qualities to excel in the sweeper position.

Physically, sweepers should have good speed and agility, allowing them to cover ground quickly and react to rapidly changing situations.

They should also be adept at one-on-one defending, as they often find themselves in situations where they need to win crucial duels against opposing forwards.

Mentally, anticipation is vital; sweepers must be able to read the game, predict opponents’ movements, and position themselves proactively to intercept passes and clear danger.

Communication skills are vital, too, as sweepers need to organize the defensive line and coordinate with teammates.

Formation and Team Play with a Sweeper:

The sweeper’s role is closely tied to the formation a team employs. Historically, formations like the 1-3-3-3 or 1-4-3-2 featured a sweeper as the linchpin of the defense.

However, modern soccer has shifted towards flat backlines, with fewer teams using traditional sweeper formations. Nevertheless, the principles of the sweeper’s role endure in various formations.

In a flat-back four, for example, one of the center-backs often takes on sweeper-like responsibilities, dropping deeper to cover when needed.

The sweeper’s role also impacts team dynamics, as they dictate the defensive line’s depth and how high or low the team holds its defensive shape.

Beckenbauer’s intelligence, elegance, and ability to read the game made him an instrumental figure for both Bayern Munich and the German national team.

Another notable sweeper was Franco Baresi, who shone at AC Milan.

His impeccable positioning and calmness under pressure made him a defensive stalwart.

These legends and others like Gaetano Scirea and Matthias Sammer showcased the sweeper’s enduring influence on soccer. They set a high standard for those who aspire to excel in this distinctive role.

Although the majority of indoor soccer games are played with six players on each team, indoor soccer can be played with 5, 6, or 7 players on each team, depending on the rules of the competition.

The more players involved, the more positions there are in indoor soccer.

Below are all the seven possible positions you will find in an indoor soccer game.

Indoor soccer positions:

1. Goalkeeper (GK)
2. Right Defender (RD)
3. Left Defender (LD)
4. Right Midfielder/Winger (RM)
5. Central Midfielder (CM)
6. Left Midfielder/Winger (LM)
7. Striker/Center Forward (ST/CF)

These seven positions are a part of 4 major position categories in indoor soccer:

Knowing the name of each position is a start, but you also need to understand the role and responsibilities of each position if you really want to enjoy the game.

So keep reading as I will be explaining the responsibilities of each position on the field, where they are usually located, and how they play.

Indoor Soccer Positions

1. Goalkeeper

Responsibilities: 

The responsibility of the goalie in indoor soccer is to stop the ball before it crosses the goal line and prevent an opponent from scoring a goal.

Location on the field: 

The goalkeeper stands anywhere within the area next to the goal line all the way to the edge of the penalty area.

Description: 

Goalkeepers, also referred to as “goalies,” have a great responsibility to fulfill for their team. Therefore, their mental and physical qualities have to be sharp for them to be able to carry out their role.

They are in charge of intercepting or stopping the ball before it crosses the final line.

Their ultimate objective is to stop the opponent from scoring a goal in the net. 

They must also maintain great communication with their teammates as they observe their opponents’ movements and warn their teammates to help them counter their opponent’s moves.

A goalkeeper’s role in indoor soccer is often considered to be one that is the hardest and involves the most pressure since these players have to learn a unique set of skills and use them effectively.

2. Right Defender

Responsibilities:

The right-sided defender in indoor soccer must stop the opposite team from crossing the ball into the center of the field.

They are also responsible for keeping their opponents away from their team’s goal.

Location on the field:

The right defender plays on the right-hand side of the field, closer to the goalie.

Description:

Right defenders are responsible for keeping their opponents out of “danger” areas and stopping them from passing the ball near the goal.

They do this by luring their opponent away or legally blocking them. 

The right defender is positioned on the right side of the pitch, in front of the goalie.

They cover against counter-attacks by mostly staying in their position. At the same time, they must be quick to transition back if they do leave their positions. 

Defenders in indoor soccer must have good communication skills.

Due to their position, they can see most of the field, which means they have the opportunity to communicate with their teammates and warn them about dangerous movements from the other team.

3. Left Defender

Responsibilities:

The left-sided defender in indoor soccer is responsible for preventing offensive moves from the opposition down the left side of the indoor soccer field.

Location on the field:

The left defender is positioned on the left-hand side of the field, near the goalkeeper.

Description:

Much like the right defender, the role of a left defender is to defend, but they are also required to provide effective cover if the ball is on the opposite wing. 

They must track the ball, keep an eye on their opposing players and late runners to the back post, and open their bodies toward the play.

Their coach will often assign them to mark the opposing right winger, preventing them from getting free and sending in a shot on goal.

They also must cover any players that enter their designated zone and intercept passes from their opponents.

They need to get rid of the ball when it is in their zone and try to stop the ball from going out of play. 

The left defender position also has one more responsibility: to get the ball back into play after a stoppage.

When a foul or timeout is called, this player will also be responsible for putting the ball in play again by kicking it back into the center of the field.

4. Right Midfielder/Winger

Responsibilities:

The role of the right midfielder, or winger, is to support forward players by creating goal-scoring opportunities.

Location on the field:

On the right wing, or edge, of the pitch.

Description:

A right midfielder in indoor soccer has a variety of responsibilities, but they mostly revolve around creating scoring opportunities for their team.

Players in this position are responsible for pressuring the opposing defenders when they have the ball to make them give it up.

They must run up and down the field as fast as possible so that they are in a position to receive passes and get the ball into the penalty area.

They also must have the ability to finish when given the opportunity in front of the goal.

Likewise, they have to know when to back off of a defender because if they can get the ball, then they may score an easy goal for the team.

Taking advantage of the wall in indoor soccer is key when you are a midfielder. Although similar, this is one way that indoor soccer differs from futsal and outdoor soccer.

5. Central Midfielder

Responsibilities:

A central midfielder’s role in indoor soccer is to constantly be in a position to receive and pass the ball. They also have the responsibility of disrupting the play of the opposition.

Location on the field:

In and around the center of the field.

Description:

A central midfielder in an indoor soccer game has the dual responsibility of creating scoring opportunities and helping defend when the opposing team has the ball. 

Players in that position act as a bridge between defense and attack for the team.

Therefore, they must be skilled enough to easily pass the ball, steal it away from opposing players, and make strong tackles when necessary. 

Midfielders can move freely up and down the field during play.

These players must be all-around skilled because they will be called upon to perform various tasks in each phase of play, depending on their team’s situation.

This position requires players to have a good sense of the field, make quick decisions on where to go with the ball, and anticipate where opponents are going next.

6. Left Midfielder/Winger

Responsibilities:

The left-sided midfielder, or winger, is responsible for covering the left side of the field and providing support for other players. 

Location on the field:

On the left wing, or edge, of the field.

Description:

A left midfielder’s responsibilities in indoor soccer are very similar to those of a left-winger in outdoor soccer. 

They play on the left side of the field and try to create scoring opportunities for their team by crossing the ball into the box or taking scoring shots themselves. 

They also help with the defense by covering back when needed and helping to stop opposing players from getting too close to the goal down the left side of the field.

Similar to defenders, left-wingers must also have good communication skills to guide their teammates.

The left midfielder typically has a very wide range of motion and will often be seen going up and down the field.

7. Striker

Responsibilities:

A striker’s main responsibility is to score as often as possible.

Location on the field:

Center of the field and close to the opponent’s goal.

Description:

A striker’s primary role is to score goals for their team.

They will often be found lurking on the field between the opposition midfielders and defenders, waiting for an opportunity to receive a pass that can lead to a goal.

One of the differences between a winger and a striker is that the striker plays primarily in the center of the field.

A good striker must be able to score goals as well as create scoring opportunities for their teammates.

In addition to scoring opportunities, strikers are also expected to track back on defense when needed. 

This position requires excellent stamina and energy as they often run up and down the field throughout the game.

They should also have excellent ball control and the ability to pass consistently to keep the ball away from defenders.

Conclusion

Each of these indoor soccer positions’ responsibilities might slightly change depending on the style of play and formation your team decides to go with. 

It is important to learn each role well to be able to make the most out of each player’s skills.

I’m going to explain everything you need to know here in this article.

Soccer forwards are the players on a team positioned nearest to the opponent’s goal and have the primary responsibility of creating and scoring goals for their team. Forwards play in the attacking half of a soccer field, and there are several soccer positions known as forwards.

It takes a lot of skill, responsibility, game awareness, and courage to play the role of a forward in soccer.

Let me show you what it takes to be a forward.

We’ll look at the fundamental roles and responsibilities of the position, and the different areas of the field that a forward can play, and I’ll share some tips on how to be effective in this role.

What Is a Forward in Soccer?

Let’s start with the basics. Simply put, the forwards take up the furthest forward positions in any soccer formation.

A forward in soccer is the player responsible for turning the team’s efforts into goals and winning them the games. The forward also has the responsibility to stay at the attacking end of the field, close to the opposition goal.

The forwards do it all, from causing problems for the opposing defense to kicking the ball into the net.

There are many schools of thought in soccer regarding the role of a forward. There are also many ways to look at offensive positions.

Johan Cruyff, a revered coach and a scintillating player in his era, even surprisingly described forwards as:

“…the first line of defense.”

He was suggesting that there’s more to being a forward than just scoring goals and playing on the advanced end of the soccer pitch.

However, some fundamental roles and responsibilities apply to all forwards.

Role and Responsibilities of a Soccer Forward

There are six essential roles and responsibilities of forwards in soccer:

1. Score goals for their team
2. Create goal-scoring opportunities for others
3. Find space in the attacking half of the field
4. Think and act quickly and decisively
5. Support the defense
6. Always be alert to what is happening around them

Let’s look at each of them in more detail.

1. Score Goals for Their Team

The primary responsibility of any forward in soccer is to score goals. And ideally, score a lot of them.

They should always be ready to shoot at the goal whenever they have the opportunity. They must be accurate in their shots and brave enough to take a chance.

The forward will play close to the opponent’s goal in any formation.

This provides them with the best chance of scoring any time the other players on the team pass the ball to them.

2. Create Goal-Scoring Opportunities for Others

In addition to scoring, the forwards are also responsible for building up and initiating the attacking play from wider and central areas of a soccer pitch.

While only one player gets on the score sheet, it’s the effort of all forwards who participated in it by performing their roles effectively. (If you’re unsure what the different forward positions are, I’ll explain them in more detail in a moment.)

A forward’s responsibility is to create chances for their teammates whenever they can.

A good forward must prioritize the team over himself. When they have a chance to make a pass, they must look to set up another player to take a shot.

3. Find Space Between the Opposition Defenders

A forward should always be looking for space between the opposition defenders.

Although the defenders will constantly try to close down any space, a great soccer forward will exploit any gaps left at the back and occupy that area.

Positioning themselves in space gives them a better chance of receiving the ball and using it more effectively. As a result, they will encounter less pressure with the ball and have more time to move it forward.

However, forwards are not always permitted space by the defenders and need to think quickly.

4. Think and Act Quickly and Decisively

A good forward must not only play ahead and score goals, but they must also have intelligence and know when to act.

They must make quick decisions on the field and act on those decisions.

This is particularly important in counterattacks. Quick decisions and precise passes are essential to scoring a goal and winning the game.

A forward must keep his head cool under pressure as they often have less than a second to respond to what is happening around them.

5. Support the Defense

In a game, a good forward should feel as comfortable playing the ball backward and keeping possession of the ball in their own half as they are at any other time.

In modern soccer, the best teams defend from the front. Therefore, it is essential a forward understands this responsibility and is alert to the defensive requirements of the role.

Although the forwards mustn’t get dragged too far back at the team’s detriment, they need to constantly be prepared to slot into the defensive areas during a defensive period of play.

6. Stay Alert to What Is Happening Around Them

Every soccer forward’s responsibility is to stay alert to what is happening during a game.

It doesn’t matter if the forward is in possession of the ball or not. Part of their role is to be ready when called upon, and they won’t be prepared unless they know what is happening.

When they are waiting for the ball, they can be watching the play at the other end of the field. Then, when they have the ball, they can be alert to where the other players around them are running.

This awareness will ensure they are always ready to fulfill their role for the team.

Undoubtedly, being a forward is one of the most critical soccer positions, as the whole team depends on you! But several different soccer positions make up the group of forwards in a team.

Let’s look at each of them now.

The Three Forward Positions in Soccer

If we are to understand the role and responsibilities of forwards entirely, it is essential to consider all the positions included in the attacking dynamics of soccer.

Modern soccer is very different from when the pioneers of the game first invented it.

New methodologies, formations, and approaches are introduced with every passing year. For example, some teams play positional soccer, while others take a more direct attacking approach.

While it depends on the formation a team is using, there are some standard positions that cover the major attacking dynamics in soccer.

There are three main forward positions in soccer:

1. Striker (or Center Forward)
2. Winger
3. And Attacking Midfielder

Not making it too complex, here is what you need to know about each of these forward positions.

1. Striker/Center Forward Position

Let’s start with the striker, often known as the number 9 in modern soccer.

Their sole purpose is to operate near the opponent’s goal or at the last line of the opposition’s defense. It’s usually the striker who all the other nine outfield players are looking to feed the ball toward to take a shot at goal.

Depending on the coach’s choice of formation, one or more strikers can be included in the line-up.

In the formations like 4-4-2, the front two players act as the strikers as they occupy either side of the goal area. They are more inverted than the wingers as they’re far from the touchline.

Although people often use the terms “striker” and “center forward” interchangeably, there is a difference between the two. I explain the difference in my article – Striker Vs Center Forward: What’s the difference? – If you want to find out more.

2. Winger Position

As the name suggests, the wingers are responsible for the “wings” of any line-up. They provide the width to create space for the central players/strikers.

The wingers are also responsible for providing the pinpoint crosses inside the box.

In modern soccer, wingers tend to cut inside towards the central areas of the pitch to score the goals themselves. Some of the greatest players of all time, such as Maradona, Messi, and Ronaldo, were also wingers for a large part of their careers.

It’s also important to mention wing-backs here.

Wing-backs are a hybrid version of a full-back and a winger in some ways.

They run up and down the flank throughout the game to perform both offensive and defensive duties and have the sides of the field all to themselves.

So you could say wing-backs are the wingers who drop deep into defensive areas to help the team from the back.

3. Attacking Midfielders/False 9 Position

The position of attacking midfielder is another forward position in soccer.

The player in this position can play this role in many different ways, and it’s known by many names – The number 10s, the second strikers, the false 9s.

All of these are essentially attacking midfielders.

Attacking midfielders operate as a hybrid of the midfielders and the attackers. Usually, they occupy the central region of the soccer pitch, just behind the furthest forward line of attackers.

They operate deep and contribute significantly to the attack.

Their primary purpose is to fluently circulate and distribute the ball while being offensive and trying to unlock the defensive block of the opposition.

They also feed through balls, and key passes to the strikers and wingers so that they can score goals.

When an attacking midfielder operates as the false 9 or second striker, they also tend to score goals and play in even offensive areas.

In formations such as a 4-3-1-2, the false 9 player operates as the sole central attacker behind two wide strikers.

Having a versatile attacking midfielder is also great for squad depth in soccer.

When the striker or even a winger is injured, these players can fill in for any attacking role, thanks to their diverse skill set, making them unique.

Essentials of Each Forward Position in Soccer

Now you have an idea of the attacking positions in your mind, let’s look at the key characteristics a forward must possess and the essentials they should master.

As discussed earlier, different positions work together to make an attacking line in soccer.

However, the player occupying each position has different skill sets, roles, and aims within a soccer game.

As we know now, a striker’s role is different from the wingers and attacking midfielders.

Similarly, the requirements of these positions are also different from the others on the field.

Let’s look at what it takes to be a successful striker, winger, and attacking midfielder:  

Essentials of Being a Striker or Center Forward

When it comes to being a striker, one prominent trait is being good at scoring goals.

It’s essential to be a pinpoint shooter who has an eye for the goal and can score from different angles or positions depending upon the opportunity in front of them.

But there’s more to it than being just a good goal scorer.

A good striker is agile and good in the air, scoring headers from set pieces and corners.

Positional awareness is also essential. Being at the right place at the right time helps strikers score loads of goals.

Positional awareness of the game comes with a lot of insights.

For example, being able to move between the lines, the off-ball movements, and understanding teammates’ moves all come into play when constructing a goal as a striker.

While it’s not essential, an attacker should be physically firm and solid to cope with challenging situations while in tight spaces or scoring headers at the end of the crosses provided by the wingers.

Being tall also comes in handy in the air.

Essentials for Playing as a Winger

It’s fascinating to look at what it takes to stand out.

While the strikers may need a diverse skill set, the winger’s job can be a trickier one, and so are their requirements.

In modern soccer, there’s a lot expected from the wingers; from playmaking to scoring the goals themselves, they do it all.

Since they have a larger area to cover, it’s a must for a winger to be fast and pacy. If they aren’t electrifying on the flanks, their effectiveness decreases.

These days, wingers are exceptionally talented from the tactical point of view.

Usually, these players have elite dribbling skills to take on the opposing defenders and run faster than the opposition. The pace and the dribbling ability are the basic characteristics to look for in a winger.

Since wingers today have hundreds of goals to their names, they also need to be great finishers and long-shot specialists.

Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr., and even Cristiano Ronaldo were all world-class wingers at some point in their careers. So it’s great to look up to their playing style if you want to see a complete winger in reality!

Essentials for Being an Attacking Midfielder

As I mentioned before, an attacking midfielder is one of the most versatile forward roles in soccer.

Only a positional master and technically gifted player can operate as an attacking midfielder or false 9.

These players are usually great dribblers, agile, and have a great understanding of the game.

Their reading of ongoing matches is typically exceptional as they have to anticipate and regulate the needs and movements of players around them while performing in the team’s core.

Their off-the-ball movements to clear the flanks for the wingers by drawing in the defenders or creating spaces for the strikers are essential.

Even dribbling into tight spaces to unselfishly feed the other forwards is done by attacking midfielders.

They have few physical requirements, as many physically average figures have made it to a world-class level in soccer.

Andres Iniesta, Diego Maradona, Michel Platini, Lionel Messi, all of these scintillating names are considered gods of this position while being physically average.

Soccer goalies don’t have to be tall. There is no rule requiring a player to be a specific height to play in the position of goalkeeper in soccer. The success of short goalkeepers like Iker Casillas and David Ospina is enough proof that being tall isn’t a universal goalkeeping trait.

As long as you’re willing to work hard and improve in certain areas, short goalies can do just fine.

How Much Does Height Matter as a Soccer Goalie?

In some sports, height has always been an essential factor when it comes to the ability to perform effectively. It can even determine your chances of getting into certain sports.

For example, if you want to play basketball, you need to be at least 6ft 2in to get on the court. Thankfully, the rules for soccer goalies don’t discount anyone.

If you want to play soccer, there is no specific requirement on being tall to play. Short players can play as goalies. If you’re good enough, you’re tall enough.

That being said, being tall might still help you gain some advantage in games as a goalkeeper. The reason for this is that a large part of a goalie’s role in the team is to be able to reach the ball in situations where other players could not. 

However, you don’t have to be 6 feet tall to be a successful goalie; you may just have to work harder and improve in areas that taller goalkeepers take for granted.

A competent goalie must cover as much of the goal area as possible. 

Being tall helps make this easier, but other qualities can help compensate for height deficits.

These qualities include excellent vertical dives, agility, and in-air ball handling. (We’ll look at these in more detail in a moment).

What Are the Advantages of Being a Tall Goalie?

The fact is that being a tall goalkeeper does have advantages and is why, in a previous article, I listed goalie as the best position for tall players.

For example, taller goalkeepers can easily cover more extensive sections of the goal area in less time.

In addition, having a big player in the goal makes it seem like the net is smaller due to their size alone. This makes it more difficult for opposing strikers to score.

Tall goalkeepers find it easier developing their in-air ball-handling skills, as their height makes catching high-flying balls easier. 

When a tall goalie defends the goal, it becomes harder for the attacker to score headers. This is because the goalkeeper can easily reach and stop the ball before the striker has a chance to act.

What Are The Disadvantages of Being a Tall Goalie?

Although most goalies are tall, there are some disadvantages to this height.

For the most part, taller athletes lack the agility of their shorter counterparts. 

Although many tall athletes have above-average skills for their size, short players are typically more agile. In addition, since a tall goalie’s center of gravity is substantially higher, their equilibrium is much more unstable.

While soccer is a high-skilled sport that requires constant mobility, goalies don’t move as much as most other players do. Therefore, goalkeepers may not necessarily need as much agility and stamina as other players.

When they need to use agility and mobility, however, some goalies may wish they were shorter. Nevertheless, these show that being a short goalkeeper isn’t always disadvantageous. 

Can I Be Under 6 Feet Tall and Still Be a Professional Goalkeeper?

It is possible to be under 6 feet tall and still be a professional goalkeeper. If you can prove to the coach that you are good enough for the role, then they will select you for the position of goalie.

Short goalkeepers can outperform tall goalkeepers in terms of performance. For example, Iker Casillas and Victor Valdez are not particularly tall, yet they excel at their jobs.

If a goalie is short, they’ll need to compensate for it by improving their agility and vertical diving skills. 

There’s no arguing that a goalkeeper’s height is an asset. 

Most successful goalkeepers are tall, with two of the best goalies, Manuel Neuer and Thibaut Courtois, easily over 6 feet tall. But, on the other hand, height isn’t the only criterion that determines the success or quality of a goalie.

How to Succeed as a Short Goalkeeper

As the bulk of this article has explained already, height is an advantageous quality in soccer, but it’s by no way indispensable.

However, some qualities can make you succeed as a goalkeeper, even when you’re not tall.

The redeeming quality for short goalies is the vertical jump. If you’re not tall enough to reach as high as you want, you should be able to jump high enough to compensate for that.

In addition to having an extraordinary vertical jump, short soccer goalkeepers must also improve in other relevant areas.

Skills like reaction speed, in-air ball handling, and correct positioning are must-have skills for a relatively short goalie.

While the importance of vertical jump is already apparent, correct positioning is also essential because you can only move so much in a given period.

If your height doesn’t allow you to dive quickly between long distances, you can attempt to be there already.

Handling the ball is an option unique to a goalie in soccer. High-quality in-air ball-handling is essential because you’ll have to be catching the ball in the air pretty frequently.

For example, in a duel where a tall goalie will handle the ball effortlessly, you may need to show you can jump high enough and take it in-air as a short goalie.

Fortunately, most of these skills are learnable by trial and error. Since competitive matches don’t allow for mistakes, you should perfect the drills in training to become a better goalie overall.

Let me give you some drills to improve all the necessary skills for short soccer goalies.

Best Training Drills for Short Goalies

As a goalkeeper on the shorter end of the spectrum, you can continue training as usual, but you must pay special attention to specific parts of your existing training.

Most of the drills for short goalies are what you do at training regularly, but not as frequently as you should.

Diving drills are an excellent way to start.

However, while vertical diving is said to be the most important for short goalkeepers, you’ll only be making perfectly vertical dives a few times per game. Therefore, it’s more important to perfect the art of diving in the general sense.

You’ll need a partner for most driving drills. Your partner should throw balls high up and in different directions for you to jump and fetch. Doing this continuously and consistently will eventually compensate for your height.

This drill will also help improve your in-air ball handling, and depending on the rules you set; your reaction speed can also see a boost.

Positioning is a lot more complicated to get right because it’s hard to simulate a match environment during training.

To be a good winger in soccer, you need to: 

• Study the performance of better wingers
• Increase your fitness levels
• Work on your passing and crossing skills
• Consistently provide a threat on goal
• Practice your technical skills and creativity
• Realize how your performance is affected by your belief in yourself
• Improve your speed and agility

Each of these areas is important if you want to be the best.

So, keep reading for my top tips for being the best winger you can be.

1. Study the Performance of Better Wingers and Take Notes

The first step in improving at anything in life is to understand what areas of your role need improvement, figure out how to get better, and then focus on working on those areas.

Just blindly trying out different options will only get you so far.

Until you have a plan of action or specific goals, you will just be trying out all sorts of ideas and hoping for the best.

The first step you should take is to find three wingers that you look up to and are better than you and observe how they play.

Ask yourself:

• What are they doing differently from me?
• Where are they positioned without the ball?
• What do they do when they receive the ball?
• Why are they making specific choices?

If you’re watching someone local to you, you may even be able to ask them these questions and get an understanding of their thought processes on the field and how they train off the field.

Otherwise, you may want to check out videos of some of the best wingers in the world, such as the video below.

As you’re taking notes, choose three areas that stand out to you and commit to working on these aspects of your game.

2. Increase Your Fitness Levels

The next step that any winger can take and see an improvement in their performance is to increase their level of fitness.

If you want to be the best winger, then you need to be as physically fit as possible.

To be the best, they need to be faster than their opponents and have a higher endurance level. Being fitter than your opponents will give you an advantage in taking on and beating the tough defenders in high-pressure positions.

3. Work on Your Passing and Crossing Skills

This next step is key because creating opportunities for the forwards on your team to score goals is one of the primary responsibilities of a winger.

When a winger has the ball on the side of the field, the rest of their team expects the player to attempt a cross or pass into the opposition’s penalty box.

If the winger can accurately perform this move, their team stands a much greater chance of scoring a goal.

My advice is to spend more time working on crossing or passing drills on the training field.

One way to do this is to aim to hit a target at least 30 yards away from where you kick the ball. Then, repeat this multiple times until you can consistently hit your target.

4. Consistently Provide a Threat to Your Opponent’s Goal

If you really want to stand out as a winger, you need to contribute to your team’s goal count throughout the season.

No coach will expect you to score in every game, but if you can average a goal every 3 games, for example, then you will make it very hard for the coach to leave you out of the starting 11.

One way to improve in this area is to move into the penalty area when the ball is on the opposite side of the field.

Although you will need to be acutely aware of your team’s tactics and your responsibility to stretch the opposition defense, there will be opportunities in every game to get near to the goal at least once.

Being nearer to the goal when the ball comes in gives you a much higher chance of scoring than if you stay out on the “wings” of the field.

In the past, I would not make the most of these opportunities and used to stay out by the touchline at all times. But once I realized I could move into the center of the field without neglecting my duties as a winger, my goal contribution to the team went up dramatically.

If you are unsure when to move infield and when to stay wide, sit down with your coach and talk about it some more.

5. Practice Your Technical Skills and Creativity

Another area of improvement for a winger is the use of technical skills.

A winger has many opportunities to take on the opposition defenders during a game. For example, they may try dribbling past them, running past them, or working the ball down the line in tandem with other players on their team.

Each of these techniques requires technical skills and creativity.

Although creativity is fairly abstract and hard to learn, practicing technical skills that give more options for creativity will improve your performance on the field.

Otherwise, take a skill you have seen another winger use successfully and focus on mastering that trick.

It may take time to learn it and become comfortable using it, but when you have the opportunity to use it in a game, it will make all the effort worthwhile.

6. Realize How Your Performance Is Affected by Your Belief in Yourself

Another often forgotten part of what it means to be a good winger is having a positive attitude.

If you want to be the best, or even just be better than you are now, then you need to believe in yourself.

This means believing:

• you are capable of more,
• you can improve
• you can achieve your goals on the soccer field.

Some of your aims may be high, but that’s OK. It gives you something to aim for.

If you are struggling to believe you will be better, pause what you are doing and focus on improving something small.

Choose one aspect of your game that you want to develop, figure out how to do that, and then simply take the first step in that process.

For example, if you want to improve your first touch of the ball, find a wall and a soccer ball, start bouncing the ball off the wall, control it with your foot, and kick back to the wall.

Repeat this for as long as you can, and it won’t take long for your first touch to start improving.

Once you see this development, your attitude and self-belief will begin to change, and you’ll be inspired to work harder to be a better winger.

7. Improve Your Speed and Agility

The last area I want to look at is the ability of a winger to be fast and agile.

The winger position requires a great deal of speed and agility, which is very useful when beating defenders on the sidelines.

Wingers must be versatile and be able to mix up their attack to keep opponents guessing. They must also have excellent footwork.

Speed is also an asset to beat the defender to the ball.

One area to specifically focus on is your “explosive power.” This is your ability to get moving as quickly as possible.

You can practice this on the soccer field by training with a soccer ladder, such as this one on Amazon, or use drills where you race defenders to a series of cones.

As a winger, being fast is a huge asset to your team.

A combination of all the areas we have looked at makes a great winger in soccer.

To play as a winger in soccer, you need to:

1. Maintain your position on the side of the field
2. Focus on supporting the attack
3. Pass the ball accurately
4. Work hard for your team
5. Create space in front of the goal
6. Beat the player in front of you
7. Support the defense 

When it comes to playing as a winger, these are the seven key areas to focus on. Each of these areas is important so let’s look at each one individually.

1. Maintain Your Position on the Side of the Field

A winger is typically positioned on the right or left side of the soccer field.

In my guide to the role and position of a winger in soccer, I explain the reason why in more detail, but essentially a winger’s role is to provide goal-scoring opportunities for the forwards by crossing or passing the ball from the side of the soccer field.

To play effectively as a winger in soccer, you need to avoid being drawn into the center of the field and fulfill your role as a wide player on the team.

Staying out wide makes you a valuable asset for the team and will help you excel at many of the other aspects of a wingers game that we’re about to look at next.

2. Focus On Supporting the Attack

The role of the winger is crucial to a team’s offense. A lone, isolated forward isn’t going to be able to score any goals, so they rely on the wingers to provide opportunities for them to use the ball.

When it comes to playing as a winger, your attack responsibility is one of the most important things to focus on. You need to be looking to get in behind the defense and create chances for your team.

Every time your team has possession of the ball, look at it as a chance to attack the opposition’s goal.

You want to be able to move the ball up the field by dribbling with it or making a forward pass to one of your forward players.

The winger should also be a threat to score whenever they have the ball.

Although scoring goals isn’t the primary responsibility of a winger, the coach will expect them to contribute to the team’s goals over the course of the soccer season.

3. Pass the Ball Accurately

To play as a winger, players must have good crossing ability and be able to pass the ball accurately.

If you’re accurate with your passes, then the players around you will have more time on the ball to create chances and use the ball effectively themselves.

Finding a teammate in space or with an inch-perfect through-ball is not only satisfying but will give your team more opportunities at goal.

To do this effectively means you need to be aware of where everyone on the field is so that you can play the ball to them quickly.

Always keep scanning the field when you don’t have the ball. Then you will be ready to move the ball forward without delay.

Look for opportunities to cross the ball in from the wing as well. Then whenever the forwards on your team raise their hand to signal they want the ball, you’ll be ready to deliver.

4. Work Hard for Your Team

Working hard for your team is an often underrated aspect of playing as a winger. But a winger needs to work hard if they are going to succeed in the role.

As a winger, you will spend a lot of time running up and down the field offensively and defensively, so it is imperative that you have great physical condition and stamina.

When playing winger, one must have a high work rate.

If you work hard for your team, you’ll quickly see the benefits for yourself and the team.

5. Create Space and Provide Width

Another aspect of playing as a winger in soccer is to create space in the middle of the field by stretching the defense.

By playing beside the field’s touchlines, the winger provides width for their own team while simultaneously drawing out the opposition defenders from the center of the field.

Creating width is crucial as it gives your teammates more options of where to pass the ball. It also gives you more space to run into or pass when you have the ball at your feet.

Keeping the ball and defensive players out wide means there is more room for the forwards to operate within the opposition’s penalty box. This is why forwards love playing alongside a great winger.

To play effectively as a winger, you should master this aspect of the role.

6. Beat the Player in Front of You

One of the most exciting aspects of playing as a winger is the opportunity, and expectation, to beat the player in front of you.

Watching a winger in full flight running at defenders and dribbling past them with a trick or a skill is a delight to witness.

When you play as a winger, you have the opportunity to take on this role.

A winger must be quick and possess excellent ball control, and it’s important for a winger to keep the defenders on their toes by being agile and speedy.

A winger must have the ability to beat the defender one-on-one and get behind the lines as often as they can. Then, once they have run behind the defenders, they can attempt to make a good cross into the forwards.

A good winger must be able to dribble well if they want to get past the defense.

The winger must be able to beat their marker and get free down the edge of the field.

7. Support the Defense When Called Upon

Another important role for a winger is to support the fullback behind them.

If you’re playing as a winger, you need to be thinking about your defensive duties as soon as the opposition has the ball.

This includes:

• Making sure that your team has enough defenders behind you,
• Checking where your fullback is,
• Tracking back with the opposition winger on your side of the field,
• and filling any gaps in the defense.

When playing winger, it is important to be aware of the space behind you and the position of the defenders.

This basic knowledge of space will help you defend your goal and minimize any kind of trouble for your team.

To perform your defensive duties well, It’s important to know where the opposite team’s players are at any time.

Playing as a winger is a challenging position, as it tests a player’s physical and mental strength. In addition, wingers have a lot of defensive duties in modern soccer, and it is up to the ‘winger’ to effectively combine them with their attacking role.

But if you can combine all these aspects, you will succeed at playing as a winger and be a valuable asset to your team.

Let me start by explaining what we mean by a winger.

A winger in soccer is the player that starts the game positioned on the left or right “wing” of the soccer field. The winger operates along the field’s sideline throughout the game, and their primary role is to support the forwards by creating goal-scoring opportunities.

If you’ve been involved in soccer for a while, you’ll know that there is more to the role of a winger than first meets the eye.

In this article, I’ll show you:

• The position of a winger on the soccer field
• The roles and responsibilities of a winger
• The number a winger usually wears
• and the difference between a winger, striker, and forward.

Position of a Winger on the Soccer Field

The first thing to clarify is the position of the winger on a team.

There are two wingers on a soccer team. One is positioned beside the left touchline of the field, and the other plays beside the right touchline on a soccer field. The wingers are responsible for covering the attacking two-thirds of the field along the sidelines.

Have a look at the image below for an illustration of the position of the winger in soccer.

As the name implies, a winger plays along the sideline or the “wings” of the field. They use their speed and dribbling ability to make runs along the edge and set up attacks for their team.

The winger plays a pivotal role in a team’s attack and must stay close to the touchline to spread the defense and cross the ball into the opposition’s penalty area from the edge of the field.

A Winger’s Number (Right-Wing and Left-Wing)

Throughout the history of soccer, every player on the field has worn a number on the back of their jersey to identify them.

The position of the winger is no different.

Traditionally the wingers on a team wear the number 7 or the number 11. The player on the right-wing wears the number 7, and the player on the left-wing wears the number 11. In modern-day soccer, teams don’t assign numbers based on position as often, and wingers may wear various other numbers.

If you think of the classic wingers such as Cruyff, Beckham, or Garrincha, they almost all wore the number 7 or 11.

However, modern-day players have more choice over the number on their back and may wear one of several different numbers.

Role and Responsibilities of a Winger in Soccer

Having established what a winger is and their position on the field, let’s look at their roles and responsibilities.

A winger has five primary roles in a team:

1. Create goal-scoring opportunities
2. Stretch the opposition defense
3. Move the ball up the field/bypass defenders
4. Score goals
5. Support the defense

Let’s look at each of these responsibilities.

1. Create Goal-Scoring Opportunities

The winger’s role in a soccer team can vary greatly depending on the team’s strategy for a specific game. But one role that stays the same is the winger’s responsibility to create goal-scoring opportunities for their teammates.

The team’s forwards will rely on their wingers to cross or pass the ball into them at every opportunity.

When a team is in the attacking phase, a team will look to move the ball out to the winger, who will create shooting opportunities and assist the forwards.

In defensive situations, the winger must be able and prepared to start a counterattack and should be able to cut from the flanks with the ball toward the opposition’s goal.

Having a high level of passing accuracy and skill is vital, and we’ll look at that a bit more in a moment.

2. Stretch the Opposition Defense

As part of their position as a provider, another of a winger’s roles is to create space for the forwards to operate in. They are often the player in the team who can do this most effectively.

To perform this role, the winger will try to hold the ball out on the flank of the field and drag the fullbacks out of position.

This is often referred to as “providing width” for a team.

As the winger stays out wide and the opposition’s fullbacks follow them, more space is created in the center of the field.

During attacking play, the winger must look to peel wide to leave this space open for the forwards to exploit. Making the most of this role is often crucial to a team’s success.

In addition to receiving the ball out wide, a winger must be quick and possess the necessary speed to outrun the right back.

If a winger can use this ability well during a counterattack, they will easily stretch the opposition’s defense.

The defenders often commit fouls when defending against a fast winger, and many defenders dread this challenge.

3. Move the Ball up the Field and Bypass the Defenders

Another role of a winger is to move the ball up the field as quickly and effectively as possible.

A good winger will make defenders work hard to win back the ball by varying their patterns of play and movement along the sidelines.

The winger must be able to beat defenders one-on-one and get behind the defense. This is why you will find that many great wingers are experts at dribbling the ball at speed.

They can bypass the defense with their speed and trickery and play a ball into the forwards that can change a game.

4. Score Goals for Their Team

Although the winger’s primary role is to receive the ball from the midfielders, stretch the play and deliver crosses into the box, they also carry a responsibility to score goals for their team.

The ‘winger’ is not primarily a goal-scoring player, but their contribution in this area is valuable. They must have a good eye for goal-scoring opportunities and must be able to take advantage of those opportunities.

Wingers may score in any number of ways, from shooting from distance to dribbling the ball past the defense and goalkeeper.

As attacking players, wingers are a valuable asset to any team and will make the team go further.

5. Support The Defense

A winger must also support the fullback when their team is under attack.

This is a vital part of a winger’s role that many people forget when focusing on this predominantly attacking position. However, in modern-day soccer, all players need to help out in defense when necessary. Therefore, a winger needs to fulfill their duties on both ends of the field.

Supporting the defensive positions often looks like tracking the opposing winger as they advance up the field and making an accurate tackle if necessary.

They must also be capable of shielding the ball if there is no room to make a forward pass. They may also need to pass it back towards their own goal.

The ‘winger’ must also be able to defend their own goal at corners or set pieces.

Difference Between a Winger, a Forward, and a Striker

Having explained the role of a winger, you hopefully understand what it means to be a winger in soccer. But as some of the offensive positions can be similar and the expectations for each contain some overlap, I want to quickly clarify the difference between a winger, a forward, and a striker.

A winger plays on the outside edge of the field; a striker plays closer to the goal than any other player on the team. A forward is any one of the attacking players on the team.

Although each position is similar in some ways, the main difference is their position and role in the team.

A winger is expected to play out wide and supply the striker and other attacking players with opportunities to score a goal.

A striker plays furthest forward in a team and is responsible for scoring the majority of the team’s goals.

A fullback is a defender on a soccer team who starts a game positioned beside the touchline of the field. The role of the fullback is primarily to prevent the opposition from creating a goal-scoring opportunity. However, a fullback is also responsible for supporting their team’s offensive players.

The fullback in a team has several different roles and responsibilities. We will look at each of them in this article.

I’ll also explain the difference between a fullback and a wingback, as understanding the difference between the two can be confusing.

But let’s start by looking at why a fullback is called a “fullback.”

Why Is It Called Fullback in Soccer?

The word fullback in soccer comes from the period of soccer history where the players in this position started a game as the primary defenders on their team. The position is called fullback because these players were further back than any other player.

In the years after England invented soccer, many teams played their games with a formation of 2-3-5. In this formation, the two players at the back of the team were called the “fullbacks” because they were the furthest back of all the players. They were “fully back.”

Over the years, the formations teams used developed and evolved from these earlier forms, and the position of a fullback gradually moved out toward the sidelines of a soccer field.

But despite these changes, the name of fullback stuck.

Position of a Fullback in Soccer

In modern-day soccer, a fullback starts the game on the left or right of the defensive line.

There are always two fullbacks in a team. One on either side of the defensive line.

You can see this displayed in the image below.

Fullbacks play out wide as their primary responsibility is to defend the sides of the field from the opposition’s oncoming attacking players.

Covering this position on the field allows them to shield their goal and attempt to block the ball from entering the penalty area from the touchline.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Fullback in Soccer

Having established how the fullback got their name and where they play, let’s look at what a fullback does.

A fullback has four primary responsibilities:

1. Defend the goal
2. Use the ball effectively
3. Support the team’s attacking players
4. Communicate with other players

Let’s look at each of these roles.

Defending Their Team’s Goal

A fullback is a key player in any soccer team because of the defensive role they play. Their role is to protect the goal from attack and help the team win the ball back from the opposition.

Because of their position, they have a fantastic view of the entire field and are ideally placed for tracking the opponent’s wingers as they move up into the attacking half.

Fullbacks are also expected to keep their opponents out of the penalty area and 6-yard box by using their defensive skills and not recklessly diving into tackles. (Although it helps any defender if they can master the slide tackle!)

Fullbacks are responsible for intercepting crosses and restricting space inside the box for the opposition players.

Using the Ball Effectively

A fullback plays a crucial role on the field with their ability in possession of the ball.

A great fullback should be fast and have excellent ball control skills.

They need to be able to play one-touch passes with their teammates and have good dribbling skills to get the ball out wide. Their ability to effectively distribute the ball around the field will give their team more opportunities to score more goals.

Moreover, a solid and confident fullback must be able to control the ball at high speed.

Every fullback should also be calm when the ball is on the ground. This helps the team maintain possession of the ball and move it forward.

Supporting the Team’s Attacking Players

Another role of the fullback is to be a vital part of a team’s attack.

They are responsible for drawing their opposite number toward the side of the field and limiting the concentration of opponents in the center of the field. This action gives the midfielders and forwards more room to operate.

A fullback is a versatile position and is often considered one of the most important positions in soccer.

A good fullback creates good scoring chances while also providing strong cover at the back that will be difficult to penetrate.

A fullback must remain alert and prepared to assist in the team’s attack at any point during the game.

One way you may see a fullback doing this is when they pass the ball to the winger to penetrate the opponent’s defense.

In addition, the fullback can act as a winger and can cross the ball to their teammates within the opposition penalty area. 

Communicating With Their Teammates

Another responsibility of a fullback is to always stay in communication with their teammates and be in constant contact with those around them.

Having excellent communication skills helps a team work together and react quickly to defensive situations. This should help the defense be more effective when called upon.

In addition, a fullback should be able to control the space around them. As they communicate with and coordinate their teammates, they ensure the opposing team does not overrun them.

Good communication between fullbacks and midfielders is also essential for a fullback to effectively perform their role in an attacking move.

Wingback Vs Fullback in Soccer

Having described the role of a fullback, you may be surprised at the similarities between a fullback and a wingback. I’ve compared other soccer positions before, such as a Striker Vs a Forward or a Winger Vs a Striker. Still, here I want to explain the difference between a wingback and a fullback.

The difference between a wingback and a fullback in soccer is primarily one of position on the field. A wingback starts a game higher up the field than a fullback and carries more responsibility to support the attack. In comparison, a fullback’s primary role is to defend the goal.

While the wingback is still a defender, they play closer to the midfield than the fullback. The fullback sits deeper than his corresponding defender and is assigned a more defensive role.

A fullback is more likely to play alongside central defenders. In contrast, a wingback plays further forward, still beside the touchline, but set back just behind the midfielders.

Both wingbacks and fullbacks need to be able to move along the sidelines of the field and maintain connections with the offensive players.

Defensive Responsibilities

The wingback’s primary defensive responsibility is to track the wide attacker and make it difficult for them to cross the ball or to score.

This can be a challenging job in many cases, but the rewards of successfully performing this role can be well worth it.

This often means that a wingback moves further up the field than a fullback. The fullback tends to stay back and support the defense, whereas the wingback continues to track the opposition player.

A fullback’s primary defensive role is also to prevent the opposition from crossing the ball into the box as well as stop any player dribbling the ball toward the goal.

However, a fullback does not track the opposition’s winger as far up the field.

Attacking Responsibilities

A fullback’s primary attacking responsibility is to support the offensive players from the back of the field. In addition, they need to accurately pass the ball when the opportunity arises and move forward with the ball when possible.

The wingback has broader attacking responsibilities than the fullback.

A wingback can play as an inverted form of a fullback, which means that they play out wide but can drift centrally.

A wingback can also play in the middle, which means that they can play the wingback role when needed. This is important because he is responsible for defending the entire midfield.

It may seem as though the wingback position is a more “full” position than fullback, and fullback is possibly the easiest position on the field. However, they still carry an important role in a team.

Both a wingback and fullback can see all areas of the pitch. As a result, they can block crosses and create good opportunities for their team.

Players in either position need to be agile and quick, as these roles require a high level of footspeed.

The difference between a winger and a striker in soccer is their position on the field. A winger plays on the side of the field near the touchline, and their role is to support the forwards. A striker plays in the middle of the field nearer to the opposition goal than any other player on their team.

Despite their different positions on the field, there is some overlap between the roles of a striker and a winger. This similarity between the two is why the positions may be confused.

Comparison of Winger and Striker

One of the best ways to compare two positions is to view them side by side in a table.

So I’ve done that for you here.

In the table below, you’ll see the various aspects of both a winger and a striker. You’ll notice that while there are several differences, there are also a lot of similarities between the two positions.

As you can see, a winger and a striker are not that different. There are overlaps in their responsibilities.

From the experience of being involved in soccer for many years, I’ve found that an in-depth knowledge of both positions really helps a player understand how to play in both positions effectively.

It also helps a fan understand what is happening on the soccer field and enjoy the game more.

Let’s look at each position in more detail now.

Definition and Role of a Winger in Soccer

A winger is an attacking midfielder whose primary position is on the edge of the soccer field. A winger stays close to the touchline to offer width to the team and cross the ball into the penalty area from the outside of the field. 

The position of the winger gets its name because the player operates on either “wing” of the team.

The outside lines of a soccer field that run from one end to the other are often called the “touchline. You will usually see the winger based next to these lines.

As an example of some of the best wingers to play soccer, think of Arjen Robben, Ryan Giggs, or Johan Cruyff.

You will almost always see a team playing with two wingers rather than one. This is because having just one winger would cause the team to be unbalanced and vulnerable to an attack down one side.

Wingers offer an attacking presence to a team. They work with the other attacking midfielders and forwards to create opportunities for their team to score goals.

If the ball moves up the field, you will usually see the wingers running forwards and calling for the ball out wide. Spreading the play to the edges of the field stretches the opposition defenders and creates space in the middle of the field.

This space provides the wingers with opportunities to cross the ball into the forwards, who will hopefully score a goal.

Wingers are talented at seeing where the space is and passing the ball into that space for the forwards to collect the ball.

Although they are not the primary goal scorers on the team, their coaching team will expect them to contribute to the goal tally over the course of a season.

Although wingers are primarily attacking players, they also need to defend. A winger is responsible for sticking with the opposition’s forwards during an attack and covering any empty space near their goal.

Every player in every position is part of a team and will work to help the defense or forwards when necessary.

Having to cover so much ground means the distance a winger covers in a game quickly adds up. So when the sports company Catapult used their soccer fitness tracking device to track how far professional soccer players run, they were impressed with the distance.

Wingers run up to 7 miles (11km) during a game. This is because they have to cover a large area of a soccer field throughout the duration of the game. This constant running means they run further than another player on the field.

So that gives you an overview of the role of a winger in soccer. Let’s compare that to the role of a striker.

Definition and Role of Striker in Soccer

A striker is a forward in soccer whose primary position is closer to the opposition’s goal than any other player on the team. A striker’s role is to be available to receive the ball in front of the opposition’s goal and to score goals for the team.

The striker is usually one of the best-known players on a team. Think of Ronaldo, Mbappé, Alex Morgan, or Robert Lewandowski as an example of players in this position.

A striker wears the number 9 jersey and is the player that scores the goals and usually gets the glory and accolades.

And there is a good reason for this as they are vitally important to a team. The striker is the player primarily responsible for scoring the team’s goals. Without scoring goals, a team can’t win a game!

Strikers are one of several forwards on a team. (To discover the difference, check out my article – Soccer Striker Vs Forward: What’s the difference?)

But the striker plays further forward than the others, and there is less expectation on them to track back and help the defense when necessary.

A great striker will always be looking to stay in space to allow other players, such as the winger, to pass to them. They will play off the last defender’s shoulder and be ready to run onto the ball should it come their way.

Unlike the wingers, there is rarely more than one striker in a team at one time.

If there were more than one striker, a team may be unbalanced and not have the defensive cover they need. Therefore, you are most likely to see more than one striker on a team only when they are highly confident they will dominate a game.

Reflecting on the Differences and Similarities

As you can see, the roles of a winger and a striker are complementary rather than the same.

A winger can play as a striker in a soccer game but would not be as effective as a striker would be in that role.

A striker could play as a winger but would likely not be as effective as a winger in that role for the team.

• 2-3-1 formation, 
• 2-1-2-1 formation, 
• 3-1-2 formation, 
• 3-2-1 formation,

• 2-2-2 formation

7v7 soccer games are an important step for youth players before they progress to 9v9 and 11v11. Although, players of any age can enjoy a 7v7 game!

In this article, I’ll show you 6 of the best 7v7 soccer formations and explain their strengths and weaknesses.

2-3-1 Soccer Formation

The 2-3-1 is the most commonly used formation in 7v7 soccer. 

As well as providing stability at the back, the two defenders help to support the midfield.

At the same time, the midfielders support the striker upfront, and the wide players in midfield can drop back to support the defense. 

It’s incredibly balanced and covers many of the areas on the field, so your players have a lot of room to operate. 

Since the formation is so straightforward, young players should have no trouble understanding its positioning due to its simplicity. 

For this formation, you need reliable defenders and strikers. 

There is also much offensive and defensive responsibility that falls to the three midfielders. 

With three midfielders protecting the backline, the lone striker can also provide support to the three midfielders.

2-3-1 Soccer Formation – Strengths

• With players evenly distributed on the field, this formation is very balanced.
• Players can easily understand each position’s responsibilities since each has a different role to play.
• A good team in this formation will have solid defending, a dangerous attacking threat, and control the possession of the ball.

2-3-1 Soccer Formation – Weaknesses

• Keeping up with the midfielders requires a lot of running.
• Midfielders who stay too narrow and close off each other’s passing angles can get a bit crowded at the center of the pitch.
• Defending too wide can allow gaps to open up behind the defense.

2-1-2-1 Soccer Formation

Despite looking very similar to the 2-3-1, the 2-1-2-1 offers a more stable defensive configuration and more attacking capability. 

The defensive midfielder allows the other two midfielders to stay closer to the striker and remain higher up the pitch. 

Thus, the three players at the front of the team are assigned attacking roles, while the three players at the back are assigned defensive roles. 

Youth players can understand the formation easily as a result. 

However, the attack can become disjointed if the defensive midfielder does not press forward and the two attacking midfielders fail to track back when necessary.

Therefore, even though the midfielders should serve both defensively and offensively, they all must understand their responsibilities throughout the game. 

In the absence of better play, there is a danger of them becoming a three-man back and forward. Two of the three will be closer to the lone striker, while the third will primarily focus on defense.

2-1-2-1 Soccer Formation – Strengths

• Each player will know whether they are supposed to be a defensive player or an attacking player.
• There will be lots of goals scored by the team and solid defense.
• The attacking players have considerable freedom in expressing themselves.

2-1-2-1 Soccer Formation – Weaknesses

• The midfielders will feel almost divided if they cannot work as a group, with one set attacking and the other defending.
• A player’s defensive and attacking spaces can become too wide.
• Playing the system requires a defensively-minded, disciplined player who is adept with the ball.

3-1-2 Soccer Formation

A 3-1-2 formation may be a good fit if you prefer to play a more defensive formation while maintaining some attacking output. 

You will need to have several solid defenders and attackers on your team and one or two hard-working central midfielders.

There may appear to be too much midfield overrun and insufficient width, but players have plenty of options in this formation. 

Due to this, attackers and defenders must react quickly and fluidly to situations, pulling wide and dropping back when necessary. 

Thus, the 3-1-2 enables them to understand the different responsibilities of their positions and how they can best contribute to the team’s success.

3-1-2 Soccer Formation – Strengths

• Strong attack and defense
• Strikers learn to play from the front as well as defend and attack
• The game teaches players how to position themselves and work as a team.

3-1-2 Soccer Formation – Weaknesses

• The game can become defensive and narrow if the fullbacks do not push forward.
• To be a successful central midfielder, the player must be very athletic and hard-working.
• Forming an attacking midfield is less effective if the defenders and strikers do not take up positions in a fluid and flexible manner.

3-2-1 Soccer Formation

As an alternative, you could play in a 3-2-1 formation. 

Although this approach is quite defensive, it provides continuity in midfield for the team. In addition, it doesn’t require as much tactical skill or fluidity from the players. 

So, you can offer a solid defensive unit and control the midfield while still offering a striker as an attacking threat. 

A central defender’s comfort on the ball is vital in this formation, so they can step forward and push into midfield when necessary. 

The two midfielders may be confused in the process, as they must provide the team with width and ensure that the center is not left open. 

A team must have a hard-working, dynamic midfielder, good defenders, and attackers to make this formation successful.

3-2-1 Soccer Formation – Strengths

• The defense is tough to break down, with three defenders at the back and two midfielders across the field.
• Possession and dominance in the center of the ground are strengths of the team.
• Unlike other formations, players do not have to be as skilled or quick.

3-2-1 Soccer Formation – Weaknesses

• Strikers isolated upfront can create an overly defensive formation.
• The two midfielders may not be able to widen the field if they don’t push wide.
• Due to the central defender’s role of pushing forward and the midfielders’ covering the center of the pitch and the flanks, this formation can confuse players.

3-1-1-1 Soccer Formation

The 3-1-1-1 is another version of the 3-2-1 formation. 

However, this formation requires players with the right skills to play it. 

Fullbacks should push forward, wingers should float around the pitch, and defensive players should sit behind them. 

Although you’ll be able to score while playing this formation, there is some concern that you can’t keep possession because the opposition will overrun your team on the flanks. 

Although it’s worth trying this formation out without any wide midfielders if you feel it suits your other players. A solid defensive midfielder, an active attacking midfielder, and fullbacks willing to push ahead are required to play the system.

3-1-1-1 Soccer Formation – Strengths

• Three defenders and a defensive midfielder make up a solid back four.
• Your personnel can make the individual talents of your players stand out.
• A striker and attacking midfielder can be included in the line-up.

3-1-1-1 Soccer Formation – Weaknesses 

• It requires fullbacks to push forward, making it very narrow.
• If players do not pass angles, run, or push wide, it can be difficult to keep possession.
• When the attacking midfielder and striker do not work together as a unit, the team can struggle to create chances.

2-2-2 Soccer Formation

The 2-2-2 isn’t that common, even though it seems perfectly balanced between defense, midfield, and attack on paper. 

However, it can be a fantastic formation to use when played correctly and with the right players. As solid and capable at the back, it risks looking narrow if midfielders or strikers fail to push to the wings. 

If players don’t assume various positions or create different passing angles, the team may struggle to control possession.

2-2-2 Soccer Formation – Strengths

• In this formation, the defense is solid, and the forwards have attacking options.
• Strikers learn to drop wide and make chances and work as a pair.
• Young players can understand the responsibilities of each position easier when they see what they are expected to do.

2-2-2 Soccer Formation – Weaknesses

• There is a risk of overrunning the flanks.
• Both midfielders and strikers must push out wide to create passing angles, width, and space for passing.
• No one can push the ball wide if you don’t maintain possession.

You can use various 7v7 formations to play any style of soccer, from intuitive and attack-minded to grinding out a draw with a top team. 

Some formations include more wide players and attackers rather than relying on a defensive solidity at the back. 

There is no perfect formation for every situation, so it is a matter of finding the right players, deciding whether to be attacking or defensive and looking at the opponent. 

The best way to keep your soccer players progressing and improving is to test out different 7v7 formations throughout the season.
